SG Lenzelle Smith (Hapoel Eilat - Israel)

There was no replay (and I don't DVR the games), but I thought the foul they called on Lenzelle was the most turrible of all... at least, it looked that way.

I can't recall when it was in the game but I believe it was the second half. Lenzelle blocked out, text book form, got a rebound and they called a foul on him.

If anyone has the clock on that, let me know when it was. I would like to watch it again and see if it was a good call or not.

Among many other 50-50 calls, I thought Scott's taunting T was pretty weak.

I know, I'm over it. Just thought it was childish of Barkley to go on and on about it.

I like Lenzelle, and not just because he looks like Ernie Hudson from Ghost Busters!

I think the foul you're talking about occurred in the second half. Lenzelle was blocking the guy out for a rebound and was a little overzealous with the block out. He moved the guy backwards a little bit and that's what probably do the officials attention when he saw the Iowa State guy going backwards. Smith, Jr. was in good position but got a little overzealous.

Re: Scott I "think" that he said something and that is what true him the technical but that's just me.

The second subtle moment contributing to Ohio State’s 11th-consecutive win occurred with 7:25 remaining in the game while Grant Jerrett was making two free throws to cut Arizona’s deficit to 60-54.

Ohio State junior forward Lenzelle Smith Jr. walked over to his coaches and kept saying, “I want 44. I want 44.”

That would be Solomon Hill, the Arizona senior forward who had scored his team’s previous nine points while being guarded by forward Sam Thompson.

“I knew I could stop him from scoring, or at least make it as tough for him to score as possible,” Smith said. “I wasn’t going to let him drive the lane and dunk on us like he had been doing, I knew that.”

Ohio State switched Smith onto him, and Hill didn’t score another point, finishing with 16.

“Lenzelle did a great job,” Boals said. “He was locked in.”

Besides his defensive play, Smith contributed six points, eight rebounds, two assist, one block and a steal. He also deflected the game’s final pass, a full-court Arizona heave intended for Hill after Ross had broken a tie.

LOS ANGELES -- Victories were piling up for the Ohio State Buckeyes, but Lenzelle Smith Jr. couldn't seem to get himself into the right mindset.

The junior forward was struggling as OSU entered last night's West Region semifinal against Arizona. Smith had averaged 5.6 points and 3.6 rebounds in his previous five games, and he said he had become concerned about not getting enough touches on offense.

"I was feeling a little guilty, like I was letting my team down," Smith said. "I was not doing my best to help this team win. That was a little selfish.

"I can't be like that. I've got to be the glue guy, the X factor to help this team win."

Smith did just that in helping OSU to a 73-70 win over the sixth-seeded Wildcats that advanced the second-seeded Buckeyes to the Elite Eight on Saturday for the second consecutive season.

"He did a great job," said OSU point guard Aaron Craft. "Last game, he wasn't being himself and coached yelled at him a little bit. We wanted him to get into the groove a little bit.

"He's a junior. He can handle himself. He did a great job of taking a step back and looking at the whole picture. We need him to do what he did tonight."

Interesting change for Lenzelle, from surprise scorer in the S16 vs. Cincy and Cuse last year to lead OSU to the F4 to shutdown defender and glue guy this year. He is due for an offensive outburst, seems like it happens at least once every 5 or 6 games.

He had some big-time baskets against Arizona by taking it to the rim late in the game. Hopefully, that will continue along with his outside shooting.

Aug 23, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Rising senior guard Lenzelle Smith Jr. recently sat down with OhioStateBuckeyes.com to share his experience with the Bucks Go Pro program this summer. The objective of the program was to give student-athletes valuable experience working within a university athletics department and help them clarify their career goals.

Smith is one of four returning starters from a year ago after averaging 9.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in his junior campaign. Along with classmate Aaron Craft, the Zion, Ill., native has been a part of three Sweet 16 appearances, two Big Ten tournament and regular-season championships and an appearance in the 2012 Final Four throughout his time as a Buckeye.

Q: What?s your experience been like working in the Bucks Go Pro program this summer?
A: My experience with the Bucks Go Pro program this summer has been awesome. I?ve had the opportunity and privilege of working with an amazing team in the development office. In spite of everyone?s busy schedule, they still found time to take me under their wing and guide me in the right direction while I tried to grasp an in depth view of what the development office does.

Q: Why did you choose that area?
A: I chose the development office because I wanted to get a better idea of what they actually do. I feel that we truly have the best university here at The Ohio State University as far as facilities, networking and overall experience goes and I believe the development office has a lot to do with that.

Q: Who are some contacts/references you?ve created relationships with through networking with the program?
A: Through the Bucks Go Pro internship I?ve managed to create and/or build relationships with people such as Gene Smith, Dan Cloran, Martin Jarmond, Miechelle Willis, Jessica Olms, TJ Shelton, Mike Penner and Dan Wallenberg just to name a few.

When Lenzelle Smith talks this year, people will listen, but the senior guard knows it's all about producing: Ohio State basketball preview

By Ari Wasserman, Northeast Ohio Media Group
November 07, 2013

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lenzelle Smith Jr. still has the box score from Ohio State’s loss to Kansas in the Final Four two years ago, and he looks at it on occasion with the hope that the pain won’t be quite as vivid this time.

It always is.

And Smith regularly thinks about the Buckeyes’ loss to Wichita State in the Elite Eight last year, a game in which Ohio State played an uncharacteristically poor brand of basketball until it was too late to catch up.

That memory hasn’t faded either.

There have been a lot of great times during Smith’s first three years at Ohio State – Big Ten titles, deep advancements in the NCAA Tournament and others. But it’s those two games that seem to trump all the memories of the good.

“It lingers,” Smith said, speaking specifically about the Wichita State game. “Every time I put on this jersey, it lingers. And I don’t think it is going to ever fully go away until we accomplish what we should have gotten done last year.”

Lenzelle has kind of stayed under the radar a bit with 3 of his classmates overshadowing him at all times of his career at OSU to this point, but certainly he has been a key cog to the team the past couple of years and most definitely will be again this season, and he has been a great representative of OSU.

I agree with this
Don’t question why Lenzelle Smith Jr. gets as much time. It’s been easy to get caught up with how many points he scores – sometimes its 20, sometimes its six – but the senior guard is the most versatile player on the floor. When he isn’t scoring, he’s grabbing rebounds and playing solid defense. Granted, Ohio State is much better off when Smith is scoring, but he had one of his most complete games against Northwestern – 14 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Ohio State is a very hard team to beat when Smith is filling up the box score like that.

“I just tried to figure out what we needed to do and just hustle, (give) more effort, more energy,” Smith said. “Whenever I go to get rebounds, I think it helps me as a player overall, on offense and defense. It kind of gets me going, and that’s what I tried to do tonight. Everything else I did was a transition off of my rebounding.”
