SoCal, Baby!
Starting out here: I have no financial interest whatever in the company. But this stuff is the best consumer product I have ever used.

Grooming Lounge Beard Destroyer Shave Cream

It seems ungodly expensive for shaving cream, but man does it ever work. Does a great job with the shave, and soothes the skin after. I don't use it every time I shave; usually only when I want to make sure I look my best (which includes - no razor nicks, which I commonly get).

Max B - is it really $14 better than the gel based creams? I mean I'd better look like god damn James Bond for that cost.

Not to go too far off topic, but if you want a really great shave, throw out your Mach 3 garbage and go old school.

About two years ago, I did just that and picked up an old-school double edge safety razor and my face has been thanking me since. No more ingrowns, no more reddness, no more razorburn. Since the 70s, Gillette has convinced us that multi-bladed cartridges are better. They are not - they are just better for their bottom line - I can buy a DE blade for about a dime, while those BS cartridges go for sometimes four bucks a pop - and I get a better shave doing it.

The one downside is shaving takes me longer now - up to 15 minutes when it used to take me 5 minutes. The upside is I now actually enjoy doing it. Whipping up some real shaving cream (Trumpers, Taylors, etc) with a brush and shaving old school is now fun for me - before I used to hate it. As I mentioned, the results are way better and the cost is way cheaper. I will NEVER go back to Mach 300 and canned goo. Never.

IMO the best product out there is the Traders Joe's brand shave cream. Comes in a tube. Cheap and lasts forever.

Slippery, all natural, aloe. My face is just like a babys ass.....er....um.

NYB, why does the brush and cup not surprise me about you. I think you should just go with a leather strap and a blade. Go all Johnny Depp...

Same here. I buy the 52 pack of Bic double bladed razors at Costco for like $20 and I have a razor for each week of the year. Never cut myself and they work pretty well. I just use some generic shave cream. I do want that machine that warms the shaving cream.

I have tried and liked the Mach 3's and others like it, but they are too expensive IMO.

I think NYB was talking about something like this...

It's the razor that I used this morning. A gold plated, vintage Gillette from the 1930s that cost me $5. The blade that I used cost me 10 cents. It was a better shave than I ever had in my way too long use of overpriced cartridges.

That is exactly what I was talking about.

Jesus, that thing scares me. My Dad (who is 84) used one of those. The thought of an open razor blade against my neck makes me feel all....icky. Thoughts of blood and pieces of toilet paper on his face comes to mind.

I like retro stuff though, if you and NYB really like it, I might give it a go.

EBAY 66$ 1940's

That's a beautiful razor, Folanator, and I would say--given the condition, case and original blade holder--worth $66 as a collector item. Not sure that I'd use it as a starter razor, though, unless you really want to jump into the deep end.

If you're really serious about it, shoot me a pm. I'll send you a Tech or Superspeed (it'll be fully cleaned and sterilized) from the 50s that will probably make a better starter razor.

Just to let you know, to do this right, you'll need a good badger hair brush ($40 to $50, but it'll last a decade) and some good old-fashioned shaving cream or shave soap.

Now if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, you might want to try and obtain a 100 year old Wade & Butcher straight razor, have it honed and man up. Mine's still being restored, but--lacking any serious arterial damage--will post the results of my first straight razor shave when it happens.

Not my razor, but similar.

I don't waste money on shaving cream. Put a little mirror in the shower and shave in there. No irritation, no mess.

Amen.

I don't even need the shower mirror. I shave the old noggin (better than the public toilet seat look my genes were so kind enough to bless me with) and around the beard using a Gillette Fusion and water in the shower.

I do the touch up around the sides of the mouth, and under the nose and chin, just using hot water, after I get out in the regular bathroom mirror. I get a very smooth shave and absolutely no irritation.
