That's a beautiful razor, Folanator, and I would say--given the condition, case and original blade holder--worth $66 as a collector item. Not sure that I'd use it as a starter razor, though, unless you really want to jump into the deep end.

If you're really serious about it, shoot me a pm. I'll send you a Tech or Superspeed (it'll be fully cleaned and sterilized) from the 50s that will probably make a better starter razor.

Just to let you know, to do this right, you'll need a good badger hair brush ($40 to $50, but it'll last a decade) and some good old-fashioned shaving cream or shave soap.

Turns out there is quite a market for these as collectables. Never knew that. It is quite beautiful. There were a couple of others that were going upwards of 200-300 clams.

Let me do my do-dillegance before I trouble you.

Now if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, you might want to try and obtain a 100 year old Wade & Butcher straight razor, have it honed and man up. Mine's still being restored, but--lacking any serious arterial damage--will post the results of my first straight razor shave when it happens.

Not my razor, but similar.

Ord is right - I wouldnt start with that one. That looks like a Gillette Fatboy, which is prob the most sought after razor right now on Ebay. For shaving, Id suggest a Superspeed like Ord says. They are very non-aggressive. If you like something a bit more modern, there is a German company that still makes safety razors - Merkur. They are my personal favorite and I shave with one everyday.

My advice to any beginner with a double edge - go slow. It is different than shaving with a cartridge razor. For one, you have to maintain the blade angle - it doesnt pivot. Short strokes help here. Second, use LIGHT pressure. Let the blade do the work.

It took me about a month to perfect my technique (with a few minor nicks along the way), but it was a worthwhile investment. Truly - how often in life do we get to turn a chore into a hobby?

Glad shaving does this for you. In my case, of course, it's golf.

I have to agree with NYB. I never thought I'd enjoy shaving. It's just that there's something about the retro-cool factor (be Don Draper!), the notion that it becomes a skill to be honed rather than a chore to be endured and the fact that you're paying less money for a vastly superior shave while telling P&G to shove those $4 vibrating cartridges (did I mention my blades cost 10 cents) straight up their ass.

And if you're into the whole green thing, traditional wet shaving is infinitely more eco than plastic cartridges and chemical goo shoved out by chemical propellants from a hybrid metal/plastic (which won't get recycled because it costs too much to separate the plastic from the metal) aerosal can. My blades are 100% recyclable and my cream/soap uses no propellants or synthetic chemical ingrediants.

Plus, I get mad at how hard it is to shove the triple blade cartridges through the little slot in the back of the bathroom mirror...

This thread goes against everything good people believe in.

This thread is an abomination.

You'll be pleased to know I started growing my beard out today. It was a life changing decision - but one made on the simple fact that I figure it might give the Dawgs an edge over that pussy Mike Gundy and Okie State.

Based on this post alone....Dawgs roll. Big time. Gundy may call himself a man...but he has no beard. His logic is flawed.

So let me get this straight, man...sir. Growing a dirty hippy beard is manly, yet taking a vintage double-edged razor or even a four inch straight razor to one's throat every morning is wimpy.

Maybe in bizzaro world, my friend...maybe in bizarro world.

Yes. Remember when cavemen used to shave? Me neither.
