tOSU Recruiting Discussion

In the last month, among other things, the staff has:

Flipped Conley.
Landed Munger.
Picked up two stud LBs in Johnson and Mitchell.
Got themselves back in the game for Bell with an upcoming OV.
Lined up two OL for possible visits in Hunt and Skipper.
Started off the 2014 class with Jones.
Scheduled several other big hame 2014 kids to be on campus including Garrett and the Georgia kids.
Not to mention convinced Roby to return.

How anyone can be upset over losing Quick after a month like that is beyond me. Focus on the ones OSU got...not the ones they missed.

It's obvious that Bell and Gibson are the top 2 priorities, both being equally important. From there it seems less obvious to me. I'd sure love to add Elder because he is an elite space player IMO. What I can't get a handle on is the staff's importance on landing another OL prospect. Seems pretty important to me, more so that landing Worley. No disrespect to Worley at all but if it came down to only having one more spot left and it was him or an OL recruit it seems more important to add more depth to the line.

As an outsider it looks like the staff keeps pursuing OL talent with little success so instead of landing sub par recruits at that position they have went after elite players at other positions but you would think in the back of their minds they still want to fill in the O line. This class is already incredible and it seems a lot of people felt Quick would be the cherry on top. To me if we land Bell and Gibson then the class is beyond incredible and the cherry would be to flip an elite OL talent. With Urban you have to always allow for a prospect to come out of the blue....would be great if it was at that position.

I would think the staff is looking at the 2014 class... and based on the various position quality and their belief as to mutual interest, would dictate the final slots they go after this year... or 1) sandbag the last couple 2) issue them to walk-ons for 2013-2014 only (if that is morally acceptable)

Who's Quick?

With GA seceding to join Ohio, Urban will not reach this year.

Bell is also a high quality WR prospect on top of being a stellar DB.

Especially given who is already committed. This isn't the 2013 class where Stefon Diggs was the only gamebreaker on the board (due to the late hiring).

Quick would have been the fourth explosive offensive athlete with Marshall, Jacobs & EzE already on board. Conley can help at WR as well, though I would categorize him a bit differently.

My top 3 left would be:

Bell - Just a total baller.
Gibson - Excellent playmaker and the right type of WR we need to add
Hunt - Really nice Oliner. Showed very well in the All Star game.

in that order.

Any talent added above those guys makes this the best class in the nation in my eyes. I don't care about the other classes, this one would have addressed every single need with outstanding players at every spot.

Alabama has 4 RB's coming in and 5 on the roster. Someone tell those kids that one of them, at least, is about to get screwed. Urban and crew are picking and placing, not stockpiling. It's a thing of beauty going on in Columbus.

FWIW -- insight into 247 rankings which was interesting

JC Shurburtt; said:
247Sports will release its final Top247 for the Class of 2013 in the coming days and I wanted to take the time to point out some specifics in our philosophy for the final rankings.

1- We will have 32 five star prospects. There are 32 first round picks in the NFL Draft and because we project to the highest upside, that number makes sense to us.

2- The position representation within those 32 will fit with NFL Draft data during the past 3-5 years. For example, there will likely be more defensive ends, offensive tackles, defensive tackles, quarterbacks and cornerbacks than safeties, centers, guards, inside linebackers and other spots. I will say that some outside linebackers that are elite pass rusher types and great athletes will be valued like defensive ends. This is due to the 3-4 defenses, etc.

3- We are not concerned with where we had a prospect ranked previously. After the final Top247 is released, there is no turning back. Our goal is to get it right in the end. If a prospect has to go from three stars to No. 2 in the country, hey we missed it up until this point.

4- We are not concerned with where any other recruiting media outlet has a prospect ranked, what they reported from an event, what their stance is on a player, who they like, etc. In football evaluation, you are going to have differences of opinion. Talk to 10 different pro scouts and 10 different college coaches and they are going to say different things. We respect where other networks have prospects ranked, which is why we have the 247Composite. Keep in mind that 247Composite rankings and ratings are what we use exclusively to calculate our team rankings formula.

5- We understand that fans are fans and you all want your commits to be ranked high. We also understand you have opinions about players and want you to express it. That being said, we would not be doing our jobs if we pandered to you if you whine, post things like "what a joke", act like we are being bullies to a high school kid, etc. It's our job to do this and you wouldn't have very much fun here if we didn't have rankings. That being said, we appreciate that what we do stirs so much passion.

Just looking at LB which was such a critical need position when Urban took over, to close out 2012 with Perkins/Reeves/Marcus, then obviously this year's studs, and potentially a group of McMillan/Booker/Garrett/etc next year, this staff could be putting together the nation's top LB unit in just two years of recruiting. Wow!

So, how many spots left do we have for 2013? Also, what guys do we have a legit shot at?

I believe that the Buckeyes currently have 62 on the roster going into next year that is counting Hall coming back & with Hankins leaving (if I'm off on that anyone please feel to correct me).

With 21 in the class right now that means at least one player currently on the roster is going to have to leave the program (transfer, medical etc) and every additional recruit will require another subtraction.

Man he is such a phenomenal safety that I would hate to see him *'wasted' as a WR.

*that being entirely relative for lack of a better term
