tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Dunno. We lose two DL starters and one key backup this year, and possibly Adolphus. Next year, Bosa probably gone, so that's 100% turn around. Maybe switch Price back to DL ( I believe his abilities/strength will make him a better attacker (DL) than defender (OL). Then sign Boulaware. The OL is thin (as is DL), and didn't see too much of Schutt or backup OL guys in the game. I'll bet they were all pretty sore on Tuesday am, as they didn't get much rest. Thought it was Larry Johnston, not Smith (Larry Smith UCLA HC?). Of course we get him after his seven or eight sons / nephews already went through Penn St. Still I'll take him. Go Bucks!

I think well be fine. Trust the coaches. Everyone was so worried about our Oline coming into this year, and Warriner did a great job with them and were in the NC. Johnson has dealt with losing Spence for the entire year, and used Miller and Frazier very well. People were even worrying bout Washington coming into this year as well. The cream always rises to the top, and our staff has and will continue to recruit well. I'm not holding much hope for Carter but you never know.

Maybe giving Chris Carter another year is the way to postpone the DT depth problem?

What happened to the Larry Smith recruiting legend?

Larry Johnson* And the legend of Larry Johnson has brought in Jashon Cornell (who listed him as nearly the sole factor for coming here), Dre'Mont Jones (4 star DL who just tore it up this week in the Army AA game practices), Josh Alabi (underrated DT who was being pursued hard by MSU/scUM but came here), and Landers (late offer who blew up but a great player). That is already a very good recruiting class at DL. We just want one more interior guy to make sure we are set down the road. And last year, he also brought in Slade basically by himself.

Trust me, I am the renowned "offer every DT"/"DT is the most important position to recruit" guy and always have been. A great DL wins championships and in the past beyond the '02 season, we often neglected properly recruiting the position and assumed a 225 lb. DE could somehow slide down eventually. But we have two sure-fire DTs in the class (Alabi/Landers) who I think are very good players. Plus I see Cornell inevitably as a 3-tech DT in the mold of Bennett and is basically already there. And honestly, I could see Jones sliding down (and not necessarily out of necessity but his body type). I want another big DT for insurance purposes since we have not heard anything definite on Munger/Hill contributing next year but we are far away from dire straits here. If you want to see what I mean, look at our DT recruiting from '03 to about '10...those years were concerning for the most part. All that aside, I still really, really want Beckner for the good guys. I think we definitely want one more here.

I really expected defensive linemen will be flocking to ohio state with Johnson hiring. Very disappointing results so far. I can't believe how casual this stuff has been about recruiting the biggies in the middle. With Urban coming from the SEC, I expected him to make that the highest priority every year. What I am seeing instead is they put their eggs in one or two baskets and then, they are caught off gard a la Tressell. Losing their two top targets in one week hurts. I just hope they find someone else somewhere.

Again...Slade, Cornell, Alibi, Landers, Jones...chopped liver? I get that we expected at least one of the likes of Wilkins, Gallimore, etc. to commit due to the LJ Sr. tie, but lets not forget he brought in Cornell and Alibi when literally everyone had them pegged elsewhere at the time they committed. I would have also liked a more sure thing that could produce instantly in Gallimore/Wilkins but I also trust LJ Sr.'s coaching ability, as he has also turned rags into riches numerous times. The results are compounded this cycle since both those guys picked other schools within the same week...even at that, I don't know of anyone who expected either guy here with any modicum of confidence. And even though I want a big commit at DT, I also am pretty confident that at least one of Hill or Munger will step it up next season under LJ Sr's tutelage in the interim in case we don't have an instant impact guy.

It doesn't get mentioned as much b/c Spence was clearly NFL talent... but imo losing Marcus was a major hit too. Lost the top 2 guys at that position/role and Johnson still spun up got Miller and Frazier to play.

Quality, explosive interior Defensive Linemen are hard to come by and hard to develop. Honestly we aren't fine by the staffs desperate push to fill the position with 2-3 guys. There hasn't been talk about guys waiting in the wings either. DT is the most important position on the field because if you can't control the line of scrimmage, then you'll struggle to stop the run and won't apply pressure to the QB. Getting Beckner is a huge priority. Pushing back into the game for McLean may be the second best option if Beckner falls through.

I think you both are forgetting the phenomenal job this coaching staff has done this year. The positions of question coming into this year were: O line(lost 4 of 5 starters), RB(lost our starter), LB(our most productive LB just went to the NFL), WR(we lost a very productive WR, in an offense where the passing game was very inconsistent and sometimes ineffective), DB(we had one of the worst pass defenses in all of CFB) and QB(we just lost a Heisman front runner), and were in the freaking National Championship with our 3rd string QB and backup DEs. Our staff has recruited great. And I piggy back the recruits that @RB07OSU mentioned that LJsr brought in, and those guys are very good. When did fans become so inpatient that they think kids are supposed to produce in by their second years or they're not very good? HS is very different than the college game, and sometimes kids take longer to pick up the game. By both of your logics, the staff shouldve given up on Daryl Baldwin or Corey Linsley or a number of upperclassmen that have produced our stellar record since Urban has taken the coaching helm. Urban was ecstatic when he got Michael Hill, and also a number of those DTs have battled injuries as well. Trust the coaches! If they brought them in, they believe they can play, they were hired to do this. After the season they have months to work with these kids

Hello, if Washington leaves we only have 3 true DT's left on the roster (Schutt, Hill, Munger) not including incoming freshmen. Carter is moving on and Dylan Thompson has broke his patella twice and is undersized. Only other guy i could see moving inside is Sprinkle. That gives us 4 guys with not much experience and leaves us with little depth. It is our most important need, especially with as easy as it is to get rolled up on, on the interior line. But having 3-4 capable bodies at a position that requires 2 and a rotation, is not good.

At this point we will just have to see how good our full court press is on a guy like Beckner. Perhaps the biggest recruit is going to be Washington because losing 3 of our front 4 will hurt (especially our two great DT's). At least if Washington comes back he'll buy us another year to pick up a difference maker in 2016 on the interior. I really believe Landers, Thompson, and probably Cornell will be inside. You add Schutt, Hill, Munger, and Sprinkle and we will be fine but we do need one of these back ups next year to make a move to solidify the interior.

Don't be surprised to see Bosa quite a bit on the Interior on long yard situations with Holmes/Slade/Hubbard as two of the ends. So Bosa will also slide inside some as well

Perhaps a defensive shift will happen as well? More of a 3-4 with having a Rush LB with something like this...

DE-Bosa
DT-Schutt
DE-Washington
OLB-Booker
MLB-Raekwon
MLB-Perry
LEO- Hubbard

Point being is there's lots of options but that said yes if there is one weakness right now our defense has it's on the interior. Also with the transfers last year of our two best speed ends our defensive line definitely isn't near what it was before hand. We need another difference maker on the DL soon.
