KEYS OFFICIALS ORDER VISITOR EVACUATION TO BEGIN SATURDAY MORNING FOR HURRICANE IKE

Initiating protective actions Friday to ensure safety of life and property due to possible impacts from Hurricane Ike, Florida Keys officials ordered a mandatory visitor evacuation, officially beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Visitors with plans to visit the Keys during the next few days must postpone their vacations until the storm is clear of the area and officials ensure the tourism infrastructure is ready again to welcome vacationers. For specific Keys questions, contact the Florida Keys visitors help line at 1-800-771-KEYS.

Updates following the storm will be posted on the Keys Web site to provide detailed information regarding the status of the Keys tourism infrastructure.

Contd....

Ike now looks like it will plow into Cuba as a Cat 4 and emerge into the Gulf of Mexico considerably weaker. Hopefully like Gustav it wont gain much more strength, but with the warm gulf waters you never know.

Could we see another New Orleans storm?

Fuckers. I tried to convince my family that it would be a unique and memorable experience to ride out Hanna from the 15th floor of a condo in South Carolina, but was robustly voted down. I might have been able to sway the 3 year old to my side, but that's about it. Fuckin' pussies.

Once you past the signs and trees blowing over with the continuous rain it gets boring, especially after the power goes out. I slept through most of the AM wind and rain of Gustav. Didn't start the generator until dark.

Sounds like the 3 year old is a trooper. The rest of the family has the common sense we lack.

Ike has his sight set on So. Tx.

Hope all is well with Nutria although I expect not.

I know he has his hands full. Cleaning up takes time. I was glad I left 20 gallons of gas and a generator in the garage to return to. That, and the room air conditioner I picked up at our Boy Scout garage sale were a Godsend. Nice to have five or six hours of cold non-humid sleep. Power came back on Sunday.

It took me a week to cut up all the trees from Katrina. I lost a huge old oak. Had a big branch in my pool. I hope Nutria is just cleaning up. I heard the curfew had been lifted.

My hurricane supply kit includes a 5550 watt generator, a 5,000 BTU window unit, (5) 5 gallon, (2) 6 gallon, (1) 3 gallon and (1) 1 gallon cans of gas. I have enough extension cords to run the fridge, A/C and digital TV with some to spare. I was getting 10 hours on 5 gallons of gas.

With Ike on a safe path for us what does Josephine hold? Fall can't get here soon enough for me.
