The home computers are all a base OS of Windows XP SP3.

I have several virtual machines on the big PC which have both Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 7 as well as RHEL 5 and SuSE LINUX (both of those are for work stuff)....

I like some features of most of them. The Windows 2000 VM is for gaming, but XP has been the most stable over the longest period of time. Windows 7 is what VISTA should have been. Red Hat and SuSE are both for work as I said, but they are pretty good when it comes to things I specialize in now.

My parents use MACs and they love them.

Sorry, I meant it more as which is your favorite. The best posts come from the ones that have used everything and can really compare.

Favorite really doesn't apply in some situations, they all accomplish a specific task in my setup.

Windows 7 - Games games and more games.
Ubuntu - Runs nmap, wireshark, etc...
OpenSuse (Chrome) - Test machine, fun to play with.
Fedora - Runs many services, including openvpn.
Windows XP - My VM that is essentially a sandbox for testing and running things I am not sure if are safe or not.

I like em all, I use em all, it's good to be familiar with the options out there.

I just updated my IBM/Lenovo Laptop to Windows 7 from XP. Now my question is do I need to keep the Windows.old folder that is using over 12GB on my hard drive?

Also I like how I could scroll through web pages/documents using the right side of the touchpad, where is the mouse settings??

And lastly, I don't have any of the Lenovo Thinkvantage programs anymore...I found where I can get them on Lenovo's website, but would I be able to pick and choose which of those programs I can install? Would it make sense for me to install these?

Thanks

I assume you are saying you cannot do that now.

It's more than likely a driver issue, not a setup in Windows 7. Sadly most companies do not update their drivers for new versions of Windows on older laptops. You might be able to find a compatible driver on a newer Lenovo laptop that works. I did that with my Dell when I updated to Windows 7. I had a couple of driver issues, but luckily some of the new studio drivers worked with my computer. Of course I had essentially the same hardware, so it made sense it would work.

Well I found the mouse settings, but there's no setting to change where I can scroll with the touchpad. I guess I'll do some searching on Lenovo.

The old folder is created in case the installation of Windows 7 failed, or you want to roll back to your old OS. Check to make sure all your programs and files are in the right places and you can delete it. Keep it if for some reason you want the ability to roll back to your old OS.

Worst case....copy it to a DVD then delete it. You can always put it back.

as for Thinkvantage, I have no idea.

Just to test things out you may want to change the directory name to something like old.windows and play around for a day, that way you'll know if any shortcuts are missing but usually that's just a delete.
