11W: Sources: Braxton Miller to undergo shoulder surgery on Friday

Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller collected his second consecutive Chicago Tribune Silver Football award Wednesday night. On Friday, he’ll undergo surgery on his throwing shoulder, sources told Eleven Warriors.

The procedure is minor in nature and should not significantly impact his status for spring practice or the 2014 season. Miller injured the shoulder on the fifth play of the Orange Bowl when he was sacked by Vic Beasley. Miller was sacked five times in the game and took several other shots to his body.

“I think it just affected my running,” Miller said after the Buckeyes’ 40-35 loss to Clemson. “Throwing-wise, it was cool. I don’t know what happened. I landed on my elbow, but it shot right up to my shoulder. It was hurting real bad.”

Dating to high school, Miller’s playing career has been dotted with injuries. He missed all or parts of three games last season with a sprained MCL and was sidelined multiple times his freshman and sophomore seasons with various injuries. None were serious.

In a December interview with the Tribune, Miller complained about the cumulative effect of taking so many hits, but he then shied away from those comments in subsequent interviews.

During the 2012 season, he had 227 carries. That number dipped to 171 in 2013. Miller gained more than 1,000 yards both years. He enters his senior season in eighth place on the Buckeyes’ all-time passing chart, 2,256 yards behind leader Art Schlichter.

What is the reason why they wait to have a surgery like this? It seems it could have been done after the bowl game. Is there a necessary healing or wait and see if it is needed scenario here? Obviously one would want Brax to have maximum recovery time.

On the subject of quarterbacks, Meyer also discussed one of his own right now, Braxton Miller, who will go through a "Gruden QB Camp."

"We're having him watch DVDs. I think Jon Gruden does a heckuva job with quarterbacks. I tried last year (to get him to come). So we're just doing it ourselves. I would try him again. He's a busy guy," Meyer said.

Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman will simulate the role of Gruden.

Serious question, why do football players seem to get cramps so much? I mean soccer players don't get near as many yet run way more and for a lot longer. It always baffles me. Reason I bring that in here is because Braxton has always battled cramps... which scares the lights out of me every time because I always get real worried when he goes down like that (like Beanie did hurting his foot). Obviously Braxton trains and hydrates well so it's unfortunate that it appears he is more susceptible to cramping.

I lean on the side of too little body fat from excessive weight training & cardio. It's counter-productive to be carrying less than ~7-8% body fat. When you get below that threshold your adipose tissue no longer has anywhere to store H2O. A lot of skill guys in football are way below this 7-8% range (which may be why you see the lean guys drop like flies on a humid day while the big uglies in the trenches play 80+ snaps). You mention soccer, but the same holds for basketball and hockey. Athletes in other sports train towards something approaching functional fitness, where football players that target only increased mass IMHO will sacrifice endurance.
