Stephen really wants to play for Auburn. He and his family are trying to work out the details because he will most likely attempt to walk-on, which means paying out of state tuition. The Auburn coaches are working to find different avenues for financial aid for Stephen. He hopes to walk-on and earn a scholarship.
I admire the dedication. I laugh at the fiscal responsibility.

This is obviously a case of a kid trying to follow his heart. I admire that. Anything GeorgiaTerp can add would be greatly appreciated. Best of luck to Stephen in all of his endeavors.

From the Auburn site...I'm sure a lot of you remember Stephen and Georgia Terp. Well, Stephen is following his heart and walking on at Auburn. He decided against attending a school like Troy or Georgia Southern for the chance to prove himself at his dream school. I for one will be tracking Stephen's progress over the next few year. I hope he is able to fufill his dream of suiting up for the Auburn Tigers...good luck Stephen!

Column: Gowland finds spot at Auburn
07/06/2006
A two-way threat at Parkview, Stephen Gowland was a Division I football prospect, a tight end with good pass-catching skills and a playmaking defensive end.
At the college level, he's become something else - the world's tallest fullback.
"I've noticed that a lot in practice," the 6-foot-4, 230-pound Gowland said of his height. "Fullback's a lot different from tight end, but it's been good. I feel like I'm in a good spot right now."
It's nice to see Gowland find a spot, particularly with his unusual experience with the recruiting process. It was an interesting ride that ended with a high school senior dictating his college choice, rather than having his destination decided by which school offered a scholarship.
His recruitment got off to a blazing start. Ohio State offered him as a junior. Wake Forest offered over the summer. He made it clear from the start that Auburn was his No. 1 choice if a scholarship offer came his way.
But that offer, despite his patience, never came. His insistence on Auburn likely turned away other potential recruiters so the 2005 National Signing Day came and went without him accepting a scholarship. Other, smaller schools made late pushes but Gowland decided to be a preferred walk-on at Auburn.
Back then he talked with the Auburn coaches about playing fullback since the Tigers had no opening at tight end. His recruiting class was possibly Auburn's best ever at tight end with Andrew McCain, Tommy Trott and Gabe McKenzie, the latter two Scout.com five-star recruits.
"Coach (Greg) Knox told me, 'Any other year, you're our No. 1 guy (at tight end)'," Gowland said.
Now the redshirt freshman has a chance to be the No. 1 guy, just not at tight end.
Gowland left spring practice as Auburn's No. 2 fullback in a wide-open competition that includes juniors Andrew Turman and Danny Perry. Sophomore Mike McLaughlin was the projected starter, but he's recovering from a spring ACL tear.
So Gowland could be the guy blocking for fellow Gwinnett product Kenny Irons, a Heisman Trophy candidate. A scholarship is certainly a possibility now if he gets the bulk of the playing time. Both would be nice rewards for staying true to his top choice.
"Before the whole recruiting process started, I sat down with my parents and older Parkview players who had been through the (recruiting)," Gowland said. "They all told me to go where your heart is and everything else would work out. I knew I wanted to go to Auburn. My heart was at Auburn."
