'05 Ohio RB/DB Ryan Brinson (Transfer from WVU to Akron)

Not to be too negative, but I didn't think Brinson was impressive running against Glenville. He had 92 on 25, but about 40 of those yards were on a play at the end when they were trying to run the clock out and Glenville was trying to strip the ball. Take that away and he had 50 on his first 24 carries. He played well on D, but not running on that particular Saturday.

I think Brinson's caught in a numbers game with OSU. With us being in on 4 bigger names and running out of 'ships, I don't think he'll get an offer.

Just my opinion, though...
agree i was not impressed, on that 40 yard run Jamario showed he can flat out fly he opened up the jets and ran him down. I believe both Brinson and Conners made first time all state, slightly suprisinig to me based on what i saw saturday night. Neither were impressive against quality defenses.

Did Duane say which side of the ball we're recruiting him for?
I think they were looking at him as a DB.
All hearsay and rumors but are their academic issues that need to be ironed out first before he is considered for an offer? If anyone knows anything about this please do tell. Thanks in advance.
He is one heck of an athlete and I sure hope it all works out ...

Football/Canton McKinley
McKinley back eyes final goal
Winning title all that is left for Brinson to achieve on the field
By Casey Moore
Beacon Journal staff writer

The talk of area high school football all season has been Hoban running back Tyrell Sutton.

And why not? Sutton finished his high school career with 9,438 yards and 115 touchdowns.

Record-breaking Canton McKinley running back Ryan Brinson pays that no mind, because he can still win a state championship.

Brinson's numbers might not match Sutton's, but the Division I Co-Offensive Player of the Year has possesses some remarkable numbers.

He is the all-time leading rusher at Canton McKinley with more than 4,000 yards and is the school's all-time leading scorer, a product of his versatility on defense and special teams in addition to running back.

Brinson also holds the school's single-season rushing record with 2,320 yards (and counting) and owns the top two single-game rushing marks with 330 in the Bulldogs' first-round playoff game this year, and another game of 297 as a sophomore.

``He's a special kind of player,'' second-year McKinley coach Brian Cross said. ``He has been an instrumental part of the turnaround of this program. He makes everybody else around him play a little bit better, just by his play alone, because they want to step up and be a part of everything.''

Even Brinson is impressed with what he has done.

``I didn't think I would make an impact like this,'' Brinson said. ``I finally sat down and thought about a lot of the stuff that I've accomplished, the records and what-not and I'm just thankful that I was given the ability to be able to go out there and play.''

Brinson hopes to add another accomplishment to that list today when the Bulldogs face undefeated Cincinnati Colerain in the Division I state championship game at Fawcett Stadium.

``This will be my last football game wearing a McKinley Bulldog uniform, so I'm going to go out and play harder than I've ever played,'' Brinson said.

Regardless of the outcome, Brinson's next step is deciding where he's going to go to school next year.

And finally, Massillon isn't an option.

Brinson gave McKinley faithful quite a scare after his sophomore season when rumors circulated that he might transfer.

``I always knew I was going to be a Bulldog, even though everyone was trying to say I was going to Massillon,'' Brinson said.

Because most of his mother's side of the family lived in nearby Massillon, there was plenty of talk that the Bulldogs' best up-and-coming athlete was headed for Tigertown.

``I just laughed about it and kept coming to football practice at McKinley,'' Brinson said. ``This is home, this is where I'm planted. I think people finally realize that now that I have one game left.''

Brinson has yet to orally commit to a college, but says the front-runners include Wisconsin, West Virginia and Iowa, which he will visit in two weeks.

``I'm basically weighing my options and making sure I keep my senior year in the classroom together,'' Brinson said. ``I just want to go take all my visits and just see what all the facilities are like, see what the coaching staff is like at all the schools. Before signing day (in February), I'll make my decision.''

Then it will be on to the loftier goals.

``Maybe win the Heisman (Trophy),'' Brinson said with a grin.

OSU looking at Brinson?

Ohio State coaches are taking another look at McKinley’s record-setting running, Ryan Brinson. But don’t expect much to change. An opportunity could open if the Buckeyes are turned down by four backs they are recruiting.

OSU is making a mistake in not going after Brinson, who is waiting on college entrance test scores. If Brinson is a qualifier and meets OSU’s academic requirements, the Buckeyes should offer him a scholarship.

“I don’t know how sincere they are,” Cross said. “I know they think he is a great player, and they think they could end up playing against him. At the college level, you’re looking for people to fit with what you do. They haven’t said no, but they haven’t said they’re gung-ho going after him, either.”

The Buckeyes prefer big running backs. Who knows why? Lydell Ross and Maurice Hall certainly didn’t light up the world. Both fit Ohio State’s “big-back” mentality.

When did Maurice Hall fit the "big-back" mentality? (This doesn't question Buckskin86--but the Canton Rep article which he linked to.)

I thought MoH was recruited as more of a scat-back type...

Ohio RB Looks at Big East, Big Ten
By BlueGoldNews.com
Date: Dec 16, 2004

Canton McKinley (Ohio) High School is certainly no stranger to putting players in Division 1 schools, and the numbers of their alumni in the collegiate ranks will increase when running back Ryan Brinson makes his choice.

At five feet nine inches and 175 pounds, Brinson is a small and elusive target for opposing defenses. Add in his sub-4.4 speed, and he is the perfect scatback for a spread offense. Therefore, it was no surprise to see Brinson on an official visit to West Virginia the weekend of December 10th.
“I like it there a lot,” the well-spoken senior said of his visit. “A lot of people told me how good it was, so I was expecting to have a good visit, and I did. All the guys were really cool – the coaches, the players, and even the president. We got to meet him, and it was just a nice time.

“West Virginia has good academics, and I got to see everything about the program. I’m looking for a school where I can get an education and win on the field, and West Virginia has all of those qualities.”

Brinson, who plans to major in either athletic education or an area of the journalism field, was as impressed with the academic side of the visit as with the athletic side, and clearly has his priorities in order when it comes to college. He is obviously coming to play football, but he plans to utilize his time wisely and leave with a degree.

Brinson was hosted by another Ohio running back, Pernell Williams. And although the two did not know each other before the visit, they quickly hit it off.

“I knew of him,” Brinson said of Williams, who starred in the Buckeye state last year and participated in the Big 33 all-star game, “but I hadn’t met him before this. We had a good time.”

Like many of the players on the weekend visit, Brinson got the chance to watch one of West Virginia’s first Gator Bowl practices, and liked what he saw there as well. While noting he would “fit in very well in that offense,” Brinson may have been thinking of other sub-six-foot running backs that have prospered in a Mountaineer uniform in recent years. With players such as Amos Zereoue and Avon Cobourne paving the way, West Virginia isn’t afraid to feature smaller backs – a fact that many smaller, but productive, rushers are learning.

Brinson, who has visits scheduled for Iowa on Dec. 17th and Wisconsin in January, is not sure if he will take all of his visits before making a decision

Brinson is going to West Virginia (giving them yet another potential RB in place of Gwaltney), pending test scores as per today's Canton Repository.

However, running back-defensive back Ryan Brinson has verbally committed to West Virginia. The Mountaineers will hold a scholarship for Brinson, pending the outcome of college entrance exams. If Brinson qualifies, he’s in on a full-ride. If not, West Virginia could make him a Proposition 48 player, in which he pays his way his first year, then goes on scholarship if he shows he can do the course work. Or Brinson could go to junior college.

“Every kid has options and an opportunity to go to college if he really wants one,” Cross said. “That’s the message I’m delivering not only to Ryan, but every kid who plays for us.”

After just shoring up Brinson, it doesn't make sense that Rodriguez would jump back in the ring in the "Gwaltney lottery". I know he's the best out of anyone else WVU is after, but you don't need 4-6 RB's in one single class (situation is similar to Minnesota recruiting 6 QB's in last years class). Spread 'em out, pack rat!

Brinson enrolls at Va. military school
Wednesday, August 24, 2005

Former McKinley High School all-state football player Ryan Brinson has enrolled at Hargrave Military Academy.

Brinson, McKinley’s career rushing and scoring leader, had originally planned to attend West Virginia University but instead will attend the prep school in Chatham, Va., for a year.

He earned All-Ohio honors after leading McKinley to the Division I state finals as a tailback and safety. He rushed for a school-record 2,405 yards in becoming McKinley’s career leader with 4,772 yards and 336 points. Brinson owns the school’s top three single-game rushing performances and six of the top 15. He was the first Bulldog to surpass 1,000 yards in a season three times. He also was selected The Repository’s Stark County Player of the Year last season.

Brinson is playing cornerback at Hargrave. The school opens it season Sept. 3 against Richmond (Va.) Benedictine.

There is a thread on Bnuts free recruiting board discussing the four D-line who will be playing at Hargrave. Callhan Bright , Melvin Azeese (SP?), and a DT named Poe who floped from LSU to OLE Miss (or Miss State) were the headliners. Hargrave's incoming class rivals most major colleges.
