News reports coming out that Stafon was injured in a weight-lifting accident when a bar fell on his throat. Dammit

Wow. That's one of the things always in the back of my mind when I'm lifting. Hope he's alright..

Can't wait to go lift tonight. :so:

Not sure how it happened... Unless he was benching something he had no shot at doing and barely got it up, and then it just dropped. Obviously I guess he had no spotter.

I always think in the back of my head if I run in to a jam, to roll the bar down my chest.

I just heard that as well. Judging by the amount of weight these guys can lift(espn says he was doing a bench press) that sounds like a very scary/serious injury to have. Best wishes to him and a speedy recovery.

First off, what the hell was the spotter doing? Was he benching without a spotter? If so, how stupid do you have to be to bench without a spotter?

edit: Apparently, he had a spotter. Freak accident.

Have they not heard of Smith machines in SoCal?

Smith machines are for pussies.

I saw on the crawler of MNF that the bar slipped out of his right hand, not sure how. So it makes sense if he didn't have a spotter, and was lifting something manageable.

Sometimes I find myself lifting with the bar resting on my palms on lighter reps without grasping the bar. There's also probably a ton of variations of exercises that the trainers have you do in college football.

If he wasn't maxing or lifting something that he couldn't do more than 4-5 reps with, there's no need for a spotter. I hardly ever use a spotter and lift fairly heavy... but never something that I'm not positive I can't get 6-7 up on my own.

From a USC fan on another board I frequent..

On the SC boards they are saying Johnson was working with 275 lbs. and had a spotter at the time.

If it slipped out of his hands and fell on his throat there is no way in hell a spotter could have stopped it. Maybe slowed it down if he had his hands under the bar at the time but a lot of spotters do not spot like that, especially when these guys are all advanced weight lifters and 275 is most likely something Stafon does on the regular.

They did say that the spotter helped get the weight off right away and had he not been there the situation would have been much worse.

He had a spotter, but a spotter can't do everything.

Re: Head strength and conditioning coach Chris Carlisle said Johnson was using a spotter when the accident occurred.
"I've seen players have the bar slip and fall onto their chest, but never in my 25 years of coaching have I heard of someone dropping a bar on their throat," Carlisle said. "We're fortunate he was being spotted."

He doesn't sound very "fortunate" to me. I wonder what the spotter was actually doing. :(

Pussies, and those who would like to lift heavy weight without the threat of being paralyzed or perhaps killed if the spotter is unable to respond adequately - like in this case.

IMO bench presses for training purposes have no business being done except with a Smith machine. They're not that expensive, and they enhance the effectiveness of the exercise. Not using them is just macho ignorance.

Imagine how quickly 275lbs is going to drop. There is no chance in hell that spotter had any time to react and try and prevent the bar from falling on his neck.
Contrary to what you implied by your post, a 275lbs weight drops at the same rate as a 5lbs weight.
