'06 NY WR/DB Vidal Hazelton (USC signee; transfer to Cincinnati)

Hazelton Help

I have some questions that may not belong here but it seems like a good place to start. Folks in the New York City area are raving about Vidal Hazelton. He's a fleet, physical wide receiver from Staten Island who is getting a ton of offers, including one from Ohio State. I'm an extremely well-known and well-placed person in New York City who might be able to help with the recruitment of this kid.

To those knowledgable about the recruiting process I pose the following questions: Should I get involved in this... are our coaches strong enough in this part of the country to nail it down if they want him? If so, what are the NCAA/OSU limits on what I can do? Having not seen him play, can anyone offer more insight into this kid... is he worth the "trouble"?

I can only tell you that Vidal is "worth the trouble", and that OSU and every other major program wants this kid.

I cannot provide any assitance on the NCAA rules, or contact with recruits. Others on this board MAY be willing to assist you in that regard. However, when in doubt, let the professionals (i.e. the coaching staff) do what they get paid big money for - recruiting blue chippers to come to the Ohio State University.

You would be considered a booster by being an active member of this site, thus you cannot openly recruit him. You would be able to give him generic information about the university in general, but you could not say, "I think you should go play foobtall for Ohio State".

That's what I needed to know. Believe me, if I got involved everyone would know it. Thanks a ton!

New York has always been considered a basketball state when it comes to high school sports with playground legends like Stephon Marbury and high school hoops studs like and Sebastian Telfair making their name early.

This year the Empire State boasts its highest-ranked player in recent memory in Staten Island (N.Y.) Moore Catholic wide receiver Vidal Hazelton, rated as the No. 2 wide receiver in the country and the No. 20 player overall. But things don't begin and end with Hazelton, who could be the most polished wide receiver from the Northeast in years. Christ The King star defensive end Maurice Evans is on the Rivals 100 and Western New York running back Kevin Collier (Churchville-Chili) is one of the best players many have never heard of.

The mystery of New York continues with former Trinity stud Andrew Quarless, a 6-foot-4, 220-pounder that has been kept under wraps (he'll be at Uniondale High School this year). The same can be said for Christian Brothers defensive end McKenzie Matthews, Additionally, prospects like John-Kevin Dolce and Michael Butler took advantage of combine appearances this spring.

New York is never the deepest state when it comes to talent, especially compared to its neighbor New Jersey, but there are top-flight prospects as usual this year and a few diamonds in the rough.

Way to be on top of the ball. Its posts like this that make this a great place where anyone can provide great information or insight.

Now the situation seems much less clear, though it eventually may have no bearing on where this brilliant prospect decides to play. According to wednesday's Staten Island Advance, Hazleton's family is planning a move to Virginia and Hazleton says that's the only reason he'll leave his currrent high school. His father says in the article that the family has been looking at possible prep school destinations. Dexter Hazleton says: "That's an open question right now, we're not sure what's going on over there. We're looking at the situation". The article doesn't spell it out, but I assume he's talking about the prep school possibilities. Wouldn't it be interesting if they move to Virginia and Hazleton ends up at Fork Union where Eddie George went to school. It's also possible that the info I got from his teammate's father that he's going to Milford is inside stuff they don't want public yet. At any rate, as I said at the start of this post it may have lilttle to do with where he plays in college.

On a side note, his father has advised him not to make a decision right now and Hazleton says he'll wait until the end of his senior season to make a college choice. On Monday he got a scholarship offer in the mail from Iowa giving him more than 40 offers from schools in all the major conferences. I'm not sure I like his quote "Basically they kiss up to me"... but he's just a kid and the rest of his quotes seemed pretty level-headed. He visits Florida, Florida State and Miami at the end of the month. There's no mention of OSU in the article.
