Hudson vs. Solon

What, when, where: Western Reserve Conference game, 7:30 p.m., Stewart Field, 33600 Inwood Dr., Solon. Call 440-349- 6230.

Records: Solon 4-0, 1-0; Hudson 3-1, 0-1.

What to watch: Thanks to three turnovers in four minutes, Hudson is still licking its wounds from last week's 10-0 loss to much-improved Brush, and the Explorers desperately need to win this game if they want to remain a WRC title contender. The Explorers have not been a big-play, high- scoring team behind their two-quarterback system of Sean Fertick and Alex Gedeon. Steve Faul and Rico Barrera get the bulk of the handoffs and receptions have been few among Faul, Pete Sankey and Tim Eagan. Hudson's forte is its defense, led by T Bill Nagy, DE Kyle Sonagere, DT/E Joe Berdine, LB Ryan Stump and CB Pete Sankey and it will be greatly tested because Solon has the entire package. Comets QB Steve Valentino is versatile and Solon has a strong and quick offensive line. The Comets also have a stable of running backs, led by TB Brandon Shimits. LBs Aleksay Tigay and Ryan Stanowick lead a swarming corps that grabs anyone who gets by the Comets' large defensive line, and CB Valentino usually catches up with whoever gets past the linebackers. The Comets' special teams have also been phenomenal.

SOLON - Solon got revenge from last year's loss to Hudson in a big way, trouncing the visiting Explorers 31-7 Friday night before a capacity crowd.
Solon's defense dominated the Western Reserve Conference battle all game, and its offense eventually wore down Hudson's stout defense. The Solon defense forced four turnovers and recorded five sacks to render Hudson's offense ineffective.

The key point of the game occurred late in the first half. Solon (5-0, 2-0), already leading 10-0 on the strength of a 1-yard touchdown run by senior running back Brandon Shimits and a 37-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Pat Jacob, was seemingly satisfied with a 10-point lead going into halftime.
Solon junior outside linebacker Ryan Stanowick apparently wasn't content. His sack created a fumble, which was recovered by senior defensive end Anuti Ngangana.

On the next play, Hudson (3-2, 0-2) appeared to steal the momentum back in its favor when junior defensive back Scotty Russell made a phenomenal jump-ball interception. Three plays later, though, Solon junior defensive back Dominic Musarra picked off a pass and returned it 25 yards to the Hudson 9-yard line.

Shimits scored on the next play to give the Comets a commanding 17-0 lead heading into halftime.

``It was all about our defensive line,'' Musarra said. ``We had everyone covered up, so once our defensive line brought pressure on the quarterback, we were able to make turnovers happen. The momentum definitely changed on that play.''

Ngangana and junior defensive tackle Zach Stolarsky took up residence in the Hudson backfield all night, and the entire defense as a whole flew around and made big plays in bunches.

Hudson's defense came to play, too. The Explorers were led by junior defensive end Kyle Sonagere, sophomore defensive back Alex Gedeon and junior outside linebacker Matt Hooper, who recorded two sacks.

Solon senior defensive end Patrick Stankiewicz made a punishing sack early in the third quarter, causing a fumble that was recovered by junior defensive back Jimmie Byrd at the Hudson 37. Shimits scored on an 11-yard run to put Solon up 24-0, and scored again on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 31-0.

Mayfield at Hudson

What, where, when: Western Reserve Conference game, 7:30 p.m., Lavelli Stadium, N. Hayden Parkway, Hudson. Call 330-653-1438.

Records: Mayfield 4-2, 2-1; Hudson 4-2, 1- 2.

What to watch: Thanks to its defense posting its second shutout of the season, Hudson snapped a two-game losing streak last week but continues to struggle offensively. While the defense has held opponents to about nine points a game, the offense has scored just three touchdowns in the last three games. Mayfield has won three of its last four games, but needs a win in order to remain within striking distance of undefeated Solon. Hudson has beaten Mayfield each of the past three years, but Mayfield won the three previous meetings.

This Hudson High School lineman has more offers than he has places to hold them, but he is checking out all the offers that come his way. He added another school to his list of considerations after making a Saturday visit last weekend.

Boston College, Syracuse, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Louisville and Ohio State are the schools he is currently looking at. He visited WVU this past weekend.

Coach Tom Narducci believes his Hudson football team is modeled after the cast of a popular spaghetti western from 1966.

``It's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly all over again,'' said Narducci, referring to a movie that helped catapult Clint Eastwood to stardom. ``We have won good, won bad and won ugly. We have lost good, lost bad and lost ugly.

``We have run the gamut and there are still four weeks to go.''
The Explorers have a 4-2 overall record and are 1-2 in the Western Reserve Conference headed to a pivotal WRC game at home tonight against Mayfield (4-2, 2-1).

Hudson opened 3-0 with victories over Federal League powers Jackson and GlenOak, with a triumph over Painesville Riverside in between. That caught the attention of the Ohio media, and the Explorers garnered the No. 8 position in Division I in the first Associated Press state poll.

Then came losses to Solon (6-0, 3-0) and Brush (5-1, 3-0) to open WRC play, before Hudson gained a conference victory last weekend over winless Cuyahoga Falls.

The club's inconsistency can be expected since the Explorers start four sophomores on defense and have been rotating inexperienced quarterbacks Sean Fertick, a junior, and Alex Gedeon, a sophomore.

``We got beat by two really good teams,'' Narducci said. ``We have struggled at times on offense, but we haven't pushed the panic button yet. We have to stay with what we are doing and tweak things a little.''

Catching Solon in the WRC is a long shot, but Narducci believes his team can finish with wins over Mayfield, Twinsburg, Stow and Nordonia to reach the playoffs for the fourth season in a row.

``The league title is not a realistic goal, but the state playoffs are,'' Narducci said. ``We have to win out.''

Hudson has been ground-oriented on offense, with senior fullback Steve Faul and tailback Matt Hooper getting most of the carries and yards. The offensive line has been led by Billy Nagy, one of the state's most highly recruited linemen, and Joe Berdine. The primary receiving weapon is tight end Tim Eagan.

On defense, Nagy and Berdine have been forces up front, and Ryan Stump has emerged in recent weeks at linebacker.

The Explorers' push to the playoffs starts tonight against a physical Mayfield team that counts Stow and Nordonia among its victims.

``We have had some close games with them through the years,'' Narducci said. ``They have tough, blue-collar kids who like to hit.''

Billy has official visits to Boston College (12/3), Syracuse (12/10), and Wisconsin (12/17). West Virginia, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Louisville, and Ohio State (if they offer) are being considered for the final visit.

Hudson 17, Mayfield 14

Freshman Ross Loberly kicked a 31-yard field goal to open overtime and the kick held up as Hudson's defense forced a missed 34-yard field-goal attempt by Mayfield (4-3, 2-2) on its possession in a WRC game at Lavelli Field. Steve Faul rushed for 79 yards and scored both of Hudson's (5-2, 2-2) touchdowns, the second coming on a 1-yard run with 12 seconds left to play.

Hudson at Twinsburg

What, when, where: Western Reserve Conference game, 7:30 p.m., Tiger Stadium, 10084 Ravenna Road, Twinsburg. Call 330- 486-2480.

Records: Hudson 5-2, 2-2; Twinsburg 4-3, 1-3.

What to watch: After a 4-0 start, Twinsburg has fallen into a three-game losing streak and is playing for respectability. Hudson has an opportunity to make the Division I, Region 2 playoffs despite losing its two biggest games of the year, to Brush and Solon last month. The Explorers are living off their 17-0 win at Massillon Jackson on Sept. 9, as Jackson has not lost since. Healthy for the first time in weeks, Hudson scored a major victory last week by beating Mayfield, 17-14 in OT, to keep itself in the playoff picture.

Rivals $

By Bill Kurelic for Rivals.com...the first three weekends in Decemeber Nagy will visit Boston College, Syracuse and Wisconsin. He is also looking at Louisville, Indiana, Illinois, and Vanderbilt. All have offered.

No mention of OSU, which is surprising considering the article was done by Kurelic. It appears as though Nagy is going to start looking at other schools and go on with the process under the assumption that OSU is not going to be an option considering they have not offered at this point. Certainly that could change if OSU offers, but as of right now, Nagy is pursuing other options.

I keep hoping with every update to see that this thread is changed to include "Official Offer". Maybe it does happen, but Nagy definitely needs to prepare if it doesn't. But as Wadc hinted at, if we offer, we most likely vault to the top of the list.
