'07 FL S Major Wright (Florida signee)

This one doesn't hurt as far as our need for safeties go, but rather just the negative recruiting momentum. It just sucks to see yet another top notch guy spurn OSU when we seemigly had him. I just hope we start off with a bang in '08 and that this negative momentum doesn't carry over from '07. Good point on Scott but he is the exception rather than the norm. When it comes down to the wire for most guys on down the road, we usually never win out. So if a prospect is ever announcing in February, I usually get nervous if they aren't from Glenville. Keeping my fingers crossed on Heyward as well.

IMHO if we would of been able to pull 30 guys in this class we would of casted a wider net and would of landed some guys that are going to other schools.

Guys like Claytor, Morgan, Arnold, Peake, Mabin, Jackson, and so on. We took lots of passes on some 4 star guys lots in part due to low number of schollies between this year and next, and they were only going to fill them with the can't miss prospects, b/c they feel real good about the can't miss prospects.

So basically we cast our net over guys like Davis, Martin, Barksdale, Still, Brent, Wright, etc. That is why it seems horrible that we missed out on these guys b/c they were the few that we went after.

Honestly tho we filled every need besides OT, maybe an extra rb and DT, but we still have a chance with Heyward.

The reason that schools like Florida, FSU, Miami, Texas, etc. seem to have bang up years year in and year out are due to taking kids that have a possibility to not pass academics, shady character and things like that where they arent even in school for a year or two.

With all that said the results don't lie and the product that Tress has put on the field has been outstanding, and while teams like the aforementioned are the ones getting all the love on signing day and sometimes on the field, they are going to have down years when they run into very young teams, and no seperation in classes.

I'm pretty shocked how quickly everything turned for us there. And not just with Major. Basically everyone we were on the last month. Wow. I thought three or four of those fellas were in the bag too.

We had a good repore Major's coaching staff (alma mater of Nate Salley, Cris Carter currently a coach there), he had a great offical visit, cheered for us rather than the team he ended up verballing to when the teams played head-to-head, we were his leader since, oh, early football season or so...

And we still didn't get him.

Not Tress's fault on this one. He did everything we could possibly do. You can NEVER blame a kid for wanting to stay close to home.

Good luck to Major at UF. You woulda looked great in S&G man.

Good luck to Wright at UF (unless they happen to play the bucks :wink2: )... this really isn't too bad, we have plenty of options at saftey... I have to say the loss of some of the linemen in this class still hurts... we're "ok" in the db department...

One thought that goes through my mind - it is all about the numbers.

Commits by year for Florida
2003 - 28, 2004 - 24, 2005 - 18, 2006 - 27, 2007 - 24 (and counting?).
5th year seniors next year? probably 3.
Then look at the eligibility chart (Scout's IITSFOF version of the schollie count copyrighted by BP and its helpers) for 2006 - 79, a lot shy of the sum total of 2003 through 2006.
Meyer walked into a situation where the numbers favor him for about 3 years. In 2006, 2007 and to a lesser extent in 2008 he can sell early playing time, in addition to the other attributes UF offers interested student athletes. Easy for him to do in 2006 and certainly easy to accomplish this year - it is no shocker at all that Wright went to Gainesville.
The graduands and early departures this year freed up enough space that Meyer could expand his class size again. By next year it becomes a little tougher. Unless UF starts seeing significant attrition, of the type that decimated their classes from a couple of years back, Meyer will be forced to either redshirt incoming student athletes or pull back on his class sizes.

It is all about the numbers. 2007 - 13, 2008 -12, 2009 - 7 projected seniors. One more big class for Meyer, and if all stay the crunch and juggling begins.

For Ohio State the bigger bumper year, with a potential for good OOS recruiting - because of the numbers - projects to be calendar 2008.

Oh, yes, and good luck to Wright in Gainesville.

I guess UF losing 9 players on D gives him a chance to play right away. Plus staying close to home. I don't mind good things for good kids.
Same thing happended with us last year:

Kurt Coleman
Mark Johnson
Robert Rose
Ross Homan
Thaddeus Gibson
Tyler Moeller
Walter Dublin
Larry Grant
Chimdi Chekwa
Grant Schwartz
Dexter Larimore

When we lost 9 starters, we reloaded. I expect big things from all these guys.
