Glades Central 70, Suncoast 0: Raiders strike early, often in blowout

By Mike May
Special to the Palm Beach Post
Saturday, September 16, 2006
BELLE GLADE ? Glades Central lost two fumbles and turned the ball over on downs once. Those were about the only highlights for Suncoast.
The Raiders (2-1) wasted no time showing their dominance over the Chargers (0-2), rolling up a 15-0 lead on two Damien Berry rushing touchdowns less than two minutes into the game.

Glades Central, which recorded its second consecutive shutout, started every drive except one in Suncoast territory, returned two interceptions for touchdowns, recovered a fumble in the end zone, allowed the Chargers across midfield just once and didn't allow a first down in the second half.
Tavarris Mottley and Semori Novembre each scored on interception returns for the Raiders, who racked up four touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 50-0 lead at halftime.
Travis Benjamin, Deonte Thompson, Deandre Holley, Deion Jackson, Taraus McKinney and Lorenzo Greenwich also scored touchdowns for the Raiders. Vicente Escebedo made all eight of his extra-point attempts.

Glades Central, ranked No. 2 in the state in 3A, dominated Suncoast 70-0 in its home opener. The Raiders (2-1) controlled field position early and often, and, utilizing the short field, scored 10 touchdowns.

Three running backs combined for five touchdowns, two receivers scored and the defense chipped in with three touchdowns.

Only 1:20 into the game, Suncoast had turned the ball over twice, each resulting in a Damien Berry rushing touchdown.

Senior quarterback Bryan Mann connected with wide receivers Deonte Thompson and Travis Benjamin for scoring strikes of 15 and 17 yards.

Glades Central's defense earned its second consecutive shutout, keeping Suncoast to 46 yards and four first downs.

The Raiders' average starting field position was on the Chargers' 25-yard line, imitating a red-zone drill against a practice squad.

Glades Central seemed to score every time it touched the ball, and if not for Mann's two fumbles inside the 5 and the second-half running clock, the score would've been more lopsided.

Coach Willie Snead pulled out the motivational tactics, as Glades Central alum and NFL rookie wide receiver Santonio Holmes addressed the team on Senior Night.
"They have to learn how to deal with adversity and make the right decisions," the Pittsburgh Steelers rookie receiver said.

Senior wide receiver Deonte Thompson was pulled early in the first quarter with a sprained right foot.
