'08 MI RB Jonas Gray (Notre Dame signee)

From the UM site...Jonas talks about being in South Bend last weekend. He was being recruited by English at UM but now Jackson is handling things. He says he will be at OSU's Junior Day.

Maybe he means OSU's Pro Day?

Michigan's reason for targeting him could be two-fold...because he is a versatile looking athlete and because he is from the Detroit public school system, where UM needs to do some serious damage control.

Jonas Gray isn't a PSL kid - he goes to Detroit Country Day, a prep school in the suburbs. Chris Webber and Shane Battier are alums. Your remark regarding Michigan needing damage control with the PSL is true, however. Michigan seems to be making a stronger effort to recruit the PSL this year and has already offered Boubacar Cissoko (commit) and Fred Smith. Nick Perry and Charles Burrell are also getting strong looks and could be camp offers (Perry more likely, IMO). Last year Barksdale was the only player to receive an offer... which was later retracted. In 2006, only Brandon Graham (commit) was offered. Some PSL coaches have apparently griped that Michigan doesn't give enough attention to kids potentially deserving offers and only goes after the sure-fire superstars.

The issues with Gray are that a) Michigan really wants McGuffie and thinks it has a good shot, b) Michigan may only be taking one RB in this class, c) as super_mario mentioned, Gray may be a better athlete than football player, d) Michigan may not want to impede the recruitment of that '09 RB, and e) the Kevin Grady stigma.

From the GBW site...Jonas talks about his interest in Michigan. He was considering committing early until Tom Lemming convined him to consider waiting until the AA game if he is selected.

For those with premium access, you can read the rest of the stuff Lemming is feeding this kid for yourself...sadly, it's pretty typical.

Lemonhead has no soul. The NCAA needs to take this guy down right now.

I would agree with you normally, but you see Jonas is a different type of kid.

Not saying he's a bad kid or that he's a liar, but he has been known to be fond of exaggeration, and some of the offers he claims he has are well pretty questionable to say the least, i.e. the Florida offer.

Since last year he and his coach were politicking for a ND offer and letting Weis and company know that if an offer was to come his way he'd jump aboard. Well, no such offer from ND yet. Dantonio has been offering dang near every in-state kid he can get a hold of and is desperate to not only get his foot into Detroit but to also land a premier RB in this class and Gray doesn't have an offer from MSU. Last but not least Michigan has only offered 3 in-state players (commits CB Boubacar Cissoko & OT Dan O'Neil and then WR Fred Smith) and are on the verge of offering a fourth- DE Nick Perry- but no offer for Gray and there likely will not be one in the immediate future.

College potential wise, Gray is probably the 4th or 5th best player in the state. Perry and Smith are a pair of PSL products that have off the charts potential and both are just scratching the surface with their talents. Boubacar Cissoko might be the best pure CB not only in the state of Michigan and the midwest, but maybe the entire nation.

Jonas is a top talent, but I just don't particularly care for the short RBs. I say let him head south if he wants...or even to scUM. I personally have no desire for Gray to be part of this class. I don't think he'll ever get an offer either...not that we need another RB in the class, but the elite kids...they can always find a place for.

Jonas has written offers from Michigan State, Iowa, Purdue, Cincinnati, Louisville, Florida, Colorado, and Minnesota. He says Florida, Illinois and Minnesota are leading but he plans to earn an offer from tOSU at camp.

From the PSU site...picked up an official offer from Louisville and verbal offers from Tennessee and Wisconsin but does not hide the fact he is upset that PSU and Michigan have not offered.
