'08 MI WR Fred Smith (MSU signee, transfer)

And I just have to post this response from the Michigan Board as it is so stereotypical of recruiting board reactions in general:

Good riddens..... i was hoping he would go green. i think the other 2 are much better prospects. I also like the idea of the spucking fartans getting false confidence so we can rip it away.

Good "riddens" indeed.

I wouldn't have minded Smith, but if we get Baldwin, that would be so much sweeter. But MSU? WTF? Guess he wants to play for last place annually.

Wow...a stunning turn of events. Looks like McGuffie isn't the recruiter that Michael Brewster is. Good for Dantonio.

Truth be told, MSU has more certainty and less ambiguity surrounding its program. Some may speculate that Ron English is the next HC, but that is a pretty gutsy assumption when you are talking about the next 4-5 years of your life.

Dantonio's got some solid cred and should be there for at least 4-5 for sure.

Time for all of the revisionist history.... Be prepared to see countless posts about how Smith wasn't that good, he wasn't a top target for UM, there are other better prospects who will undoubtedly select the Wolverines, etc. etc. etc.

I suppose that UM didn't want Ronald Johnson or Dionte Allen, either.... :roll1:

You can't possibly say you'd rather have Smith than Baldwin? Smith is very good, Baldwin is better. And I wanted Rojo and Allen badly for UM, but we missed out.

Both are big-time talents. If I were a UM coach/fan, I think landing Smith is a bigger deal.

Lose Baldwin, and he likely ends up at Pitt, with no real damage to UM on the field.
Lose Smith, and he ends up at MSU, (possibly starting) against UM 4 years and giving Dantonio some momentum/credibility in state.

Fortunately for UM, Nebraska is raiding the midwest, and helped curb the MSU momentum with stealing Jonas Gray.
