'08 OH DB Dan McCarthy (Notre Dame signee)

I believe RBO and Girard are saying that McCarthy is a done deal to nd. Really wanted this one as our only safety this year, but obviously blood is thicker than your home state. I wonder who the other safety offer will be? I am guessing maybe someone like Moore or Woods from Cali, or some local guy off the radar right now. Go Bucks

I know you're just bustin' my chops like most Buckeye fans would, but as an ND fan, I'm not worrying about it, and I'll just leave it at that.

Can't blame you with the rumors rolling out of South Bend. Guess we will all find out if they are true in a few days.

I'll bet DM gets a kick out of all these rumors, but when you are being recruited, it comes with the territory.

If this kid loves ND, then what is the holdup? Why would he not immediately commit. DM is not the type to play games or string people along, nor would his parents want him to do that.

Rumors, rumors and more rumors. Everyone wants to claim fame to the "I told you so" take.

The bucknuts (scout) article explains just how he feels right NOW, not what rumors "girard" or anyone else has heard. I'll listen to what DM says, not any "I heard this" type poster.

It's pretty obvious his mind is NOT made up yet, he hasn't even narrowed it down to two schools, like he intends to do.

It's July 4. Is he going to narrow it down to two and then make a choice by the 10-12th dates. I doubt it.

I agree to an extent bro...however, I've seen this scenario before. In fact, his brother's recruitment was similar...

That is the beauty of recruiting...pick and choose what you wish to believe and from whatever perspective your personal bias may lie.

^^^--- Its still free access for the rest of today.

Claims five still in the hunt: PSU, Stanford, UM, ND, and OSU (somebody goofed - Bucknuts said its down to four, hinted that its really two).

Mentions teammate Zorich, family's connection to Tressel, Stoneburner and Brewster calling him up, and possibility of playing with brother Kyle.

first of all, i will admit that my line of reasoning might be a tad reaching but not totally delusional...
there are 4 angles i am looking at DM's recruitment at this point that might seem positive for us, despite of what the current rumor may indicate otherwise...

1. Zorich
his friendship with zorich is obvious from the above article. the one school among the alleged top two (nd and tOSU), only Ohio State plays psu on a yearly basis. if they can't play together, they may want to at least be in the same conference where they can "see" each other on the field every year.

2. Brew. Crew
'nuff said about the crew. they are striking friendships with most of our potential recruits and are doing a hell of job of it. these kids are "respectable" in terms of their "national ranking" and leadership traits and are just down right good kids. IF we do get DM, the Brew crew should get a good portion of credit.

3. Coach Tressel
an honest, religious man who strive to be an educator, a parent and a brilliant football coach. moms love him!!

4. Kyle McCarthy
the mccarthy seems like a tight-nit family. maybe, JUST maybe, dan have thought about the potential competition he is going to face with his brother for a favorable spot on nd's safety depth chart. some may argue that the competition between siblings will be more healthier while pressing both of them to work harder. but you can't argue that there might be some negative factors that may prevent DM to want to compete with his brother for the same position. for example, the losing one's feeling WILL be hurt. it may (or may not) affect their relationship. IF they are playing on the opposite side on the team (one offense, one defense) then the possibility for them to play together would be higher IMO; but since they are both playing on the defense and both are projected as safety, the potential risk in dan and kyle's relationship HAS to equate into the decision making.

ALL IN ALL, i want to see dan in this class. "an ohio boy should go to his home state school and compete" has always been my philosophy...but dan seems to be too intelligent, too tressel-like and too athletic for us to lose him to nd. so personally, i hope he shares the same merit as my arguements above...

osu.edu ROCKS!!!

Reading the bucknuts article, DM does like PSU a lot, not only because Zordich is there, but PSU has offered him a chance at QB.

I mentioned before that Jay Paterno, (PSU QB coach) will be at the Mooney camp along with JT and others.

Here is the strange part. Last year was Dan's first year playing QB. He played DB and RB his soph season at Mooney. What makes this even stranger is that DM rarely passed the ball at all last year or ever.

Mooney has always run the ball, 99% of the time. With Zordich and Beachum running over people and DM running around them, why pass?

I don't think they averaged 4 passes a game last year, in 14 games.

Why would they offer him at QB? You have to pass the ball often in college
. Dan can motor but knows little about a passing game.

These kids today are attending QB camps at age 5. They are well prepared by the time they reach college.

Recruiters will tell a kid anything just to get him to commit. I feel this is the case with PSU and DM.

Not really, or he would have transferred to a different high school. They've competed against each other for years, I can't imagine them being unable to handle one more competition.

Why doesn't every player commit instantly then? There are plenty of kids in Scarlet & Gray who knew where they were going long before they announced it to the press. There are many reasons... taking visits, telling the coach in person, enjoying the attention, etc... for a multitude of personalities.
Rumors, rumors and more rumors. Everyone wants to claim fame to the "I told you so" take.
That's a pretty broad & cynical brush. BTW, if these individuals are out to make a splash for themselves (and not passing along info like they've done for years), is it very smart to echo the same McCarthy to ND rumor as everyone else? Wouldn't it be better to take a chance on calling him to OSU, so they can be the only one with the scoop?

Dan's behind Kyle by three years -- at best, they would have competed for playing time against each other just a single season in HS, right?

Competition in high school probably did not exist. The older bro was more physically mature, where as Dan was probably still in puberty. In college, they both are on a even playing field for really the first time in their lives. Every brother for himself!

First off, Dan was a freshman when Kyle was a senior and there was no competion at all. I never would agree that he wouldn't want to compete with Kyle at ND. It would be awkward though if he beat out his older brother for the same position. Somebody isn't going to be happy IF that happened.

As far as poster rumors, it's interesting and fun, but hearing DM's recent interview, I've got to take his word NOW over someone else's speculation or contacts. How many times are OSU ND, and other schools' fans deflated when sure things don't materialize.

Anyway, like I said, we all have fun with the recruiting game and it makes for great conversation during the summer months and most of the year.
