'08 OH RB Darius Ashley (Louisville signee)

Darius carried 15 times for 71 yards and 2 touchdowns, a 4.7 average per carry. He also had a TD catch of 9 yards, along with the 92 yard kickoff return TD that BearBuck mentioned. I can't wait until the highlight clip of that gets online, you'll see that this kid doesn't play with 4.6+ speed and has plenty of moves.

The road back to Canton begins on a high note. Transfer QB Ryan Morris from Moeller looked sharp in this game after a shaky start. The offense got off to a slow start, but after Coach Specht called out each member of the O Line individually on the sidelines, everything seemed to come together and Morris showed that he can make all the throws. I was very impressed by him tonight.

Fred Craig and Nick Schneider both had some big hits. Fred has already gotten some attention on this site, as many schools have already shown interest. Schneider, on the other hand, hasn't recieved quite as much attention due to missing some time because of injuries last season, but trust me, this kid is a player just like Craig with the physical tools to be a big time recruit when all is said and done.

St. X starts title defense in big fashion
BY CHRIS HUGHES | COMMUNITY PRESS STAFF WRITER
<!--ARTICLE BODY TEXT--> St. Xavier kicked off its campaign to win back-to-back state championships earlier than expected Thursday evening when the Bombers trounced the Huber Heights Wayne Warriors 52-14 in its season opener.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday at the University of Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium, but was played early due to a teachers' strike in the Huber Heights district.
"It was different ... we had to take four days of preparation and pack it into two," said head coach Steve Specht. "When adversity sets in you deal with it."

The Bombers standout junior running back Darius Ashley paved the for the St. Xavier victory with four touchdowns.
"(Ashley) is a special player," said Specht. "When you have a player like him it makes the offensive line better ... but our kids up front are good in their own right, too."
Ashley put the Bombers on the scoreboard first when he busted through Wayne's defensive line to score on a one-yard touchdown run with 2:19 remaining in the first quarter.
Ashley rushed 15 times for 74 yards and two touchdowns, caught one reception for nine yards and a touchdown, and had a kickoff return for a touchdown.
The Bombers blowout did not come early, however.
The Warriors tied the game 7-7 with 54 seconds left in the first quarter when Wayne running back Steve Curtis broke loose for a 56-yard touchdown run.
After Ashley's second quarter nine-yard touchdown reception and senior defensive back Eric Robbe's 23-yard interception return for a touchdown stretched the St. Xavier lead to 21-7, the Warriors cut the deficit to a touchdown when Wayne's junior quarterback Troy Gilmer scampered seven yards for the score with 2:40 left in the first half.
However, Ashley put the game out of the Warriors reach on the ensuing kickoff when he weaved his way through traffic for a 92-yard kickoff return and a touchdown.
The Bombers took a 28-14 lead into the half and pulled away in the second half.
St. Xavier senior quarterback Ryan Morris competed five of nine pass attempts for 62 yards and a touchdown. He also punched in one touchdown on the ground.
St. Xavier's defense forced four Wayne turnovers in the game.
The game was a rematch of sorts for the Bombers, who defeated Wayne 42-7 in a regional final en route to last season's state championship.
St. Xavier stays at home to host Indianapolis Cathedral (2-0, ranked No. 1 in Indiana's Class AAA) Friday, Sept. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
"(Indianapolis Cathedral) is a very talented team and have one of the best running backs around," said Specht.
Specht said Indianapolis Cathedral blocks very well up front and is a very disciplined team.
"We'll have to shore up our run defense," said Specht. "And our special teams will be a major point of emphasis in practice this week."
Indianapolis Cathedral is one of a number of highly touted teams on the Bombers schedule, which is one of the toughest in the nation.
"If you want to be the best you have to put yourself up against the best competition," said Specht. "It's a challenge ... and as a player and coach it's a challenge you want."

St. Xavier junior running back Darius Ashley rushed 21 times for 62 yards and one touchdown but was playing at less than 100 percent. He has a hyperextended toe and barely practiced last week, Specht said.

That explains it..I was pretty surprised to see him absent from the kickoff return unit, especially after his 92 yard return in week 1.

Ashley performs under pressure
St. Xavier star, teammates acquit themselves well in loss to Lakeland
BY MIKE DYER | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Darius Ashley has quickly learned to deal with the pressure of the media spotlight the past two weeks.
Danny Milligan said the adversity the Bombers have encountered with a national schedule would only prepare him and his teammates for many of life's lessons.
Those were some of the sentiments expressed Saturday afternoon after St. Xavier lost to Lakeland (Fla.) 25-22 in overtime at the Kirk Herbstreit Ohio vs. USA Challenge at Nippert Stadium.

Lakeland (4-0) was the 2005 USA Today national poll champion and is rated No. 3 nationally by USA Today this season.
But Bombers' coach Steve Specht refused to let his players hang their heads in a postgame speech on the field.
"We tell our kids every day if you work hard and play hard, then good things are going to happen," Specht said to reporters after the game. "We got better today. It didn't reflect on the scoreboard but we got better."
St. Xavier, the defending Division I state champion and ranked No. 8 nationally by USA Today, defeated Lakewood St. Edward (rated No. 13) 10-7 in the I-wireless Fox19 Prep Classic at Paul Brown Stadium Sept. 9.
The Bombers (3-1) host Covington Catholic Friday, before playing at Elder Sept. 29 to open the Greater Catholic League-South schedule.
Ashley, a junior, rushed for 120 yards on 20 carries (6.0 avg.), including a 32-yard touchdown.
"It was exciting," Ashley said of playing Lakeland. "It's the type of stuff high school is (supposed to be about)."
Ashley, who rushed for 1,700 yards and 28 touchdowns last season, said Saturday would help the Bombers the rest of the season.
"It goes to show you we can play with anybody," Ashley said. "It was a game that could have gone either way but we just want to bounce back and come back next week."
Specht said he was proud of the fan support Saturday.
"It wasn't a victory on the scoreboard, but it was a victory for the community," Specht said.
Milligan, a junior, was 3-of-3 on field goals. He hit from 38 and 40 in the second and third quarters. Milligan made a 36-yard field goal with 12 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.
Milligan, who grew up in Strongsville near Cleveland, said he enjoyed competing against St. Ed's last week and got to know a few of the Lakeland players this past week.
"I love it," Milligan said of the national schedule. "You have to bring everything you have for every single game. It's all that practice for not only this game but every one of them. It's non-stop."
While the pressure never leaves, Milligan said the Bombers would be stronger toward the postseason.
"We are never going to quit, and I think it showed today," Milligan said.

Ashley leads St. X past CovCath, 23-3
ENQUIRER STAFF REPORTS
Junior running back Darius Ashley had 35 carries for 203 yards to lead St. Xavier over Covington Catholic 23-3 Saturday, when dozens of games resumed after storms forced postponements Friday.

The Bombers, tied with Colerain for No. 1 in the Enquirer Division I area coaches' poll, wanted to make Ashley the center of their attack, St. Xavier coach Steve Specht said.

"He's still fighting a hyperextended toe, but as he continues to get healthy he will be able to carry the ball a little more," Specht said. "
