'08 PA ATH Cameron Saddler (Pitt signee)

FWIW, just looked at USC's commit list and Curtis McNeal, a 3 star RB, is 5'6" 180... and apparently he was good enough for their program. Brandon James at UF, 3 star RB 5'6" 167, was good enough for them. Bam Childress, who is NOW 5'8" 180, was good enough for US. I just don't understand why offering Saddler would be "wasting" a scholarship? I'm sorry, but I don't see it. We are going to have one heck of a WR class already, and why not take a flier on Saddler if some other options fall through?

Would anybody really have a reason to be upset with a class of: Posey, Scott, Stoney, Thomas, Saddler?

Those promoting Saddler for a OSU schollie need to be honest as to why they're doing so.
Isn't it that you want Hale so bad your willing to take a chance on Saddler in a small class.
Let's be clear.
The coaches cannot allow recruits/parents/hangers on, to dictate who we take.

I have not argued against offering the kid the entire time. I have not seen what the coaches have seen, or what the open spots really amount to, so I have not/can not form my opinion on whether or not he deserves an offer. If he deserves one, the chances are good he could still get one, as the first Wednesday of February is a long, long, long time away when it comes to recruiting.

The fact that players of similar stature have achieved success at the D-1A level does not represent the current situation in Columbus. You can point to 126 cases of guys his size or smaller that panned out, but it's not going to get Cameron an offer. It's all about the needs of the class, the size of the class, and the individual player, and he just doesn't make sense right now.

Cool. As stated already, I'll give you the 3-5 examples you can find that succeed at his size...as long as you concede the 1000's who did not.

This isn't the year to take "fliers"....at least not this early in the process.

True. A lot of times the great players of similar misfortunes are exceptions to the rule, rather than being THE rule (i.e. Dwight Freeney a 6'1" DE, A.J. Hawk a 3star with 5star talent, Troy Smith a stud QB at barely 6'0"). I am just point out these exceptions because if he does get an offer and commits, I am sure people are going to start clamoring for Tressel's head... which just shouldn't be the case. You may laugh, but I am sure somebody would stoop to that level.

I realize, but that is why I made sure to say "if other options fall through."

I would wait the process out a little longer, if we have a pair or so of schollies remaining then why not?? We have plenty next year, and no need to bank. I would take a flier on him if we possibly miss on a couple kids. At this point right now, I feel we could better fill out this class than with Saddler.

If Saddler were from Ohio, he'd be about our 19th or 20th best player. In roughly the same league, though admittedly smaller, as Akron Buchtel athlete Johnny Adams.

Hypothetically then, would you have the staff take Johnny Adams in order to also get Hale?

I think I might. But it would be a close call, particularly if it meant not having a scholly left at a position of greater need.

PS - Saddler's 2006 stats: 196 carries for 1,045 yards; another 309 yards receiving; 2,505 total yards, including returns; 20 total TDs, 6 kick returns for TDs.

I can see why some pretty good schools are willing to bet the Daily Double with Hale. I sure hope the staff is not resisting offering Saddler for fear of looking like they were pushed into it by Hale. It's neither an obviously right nor obviously wrong decision -- it's a very, very close call. I would respect JT's decision either way.

The more I think about this, I say that if we are guaranteed for both of them to committ once an offer is extended to Saddler than I would say go for it. We have been dogged a few times this year by in state kids, for whatever reason, I say go for the sure things at this point. It might make some of the remaining kids think about it real hard.

We could use Saddler, I am sure. You don't do what he did at Gateway if you don't have what it takes. If we can offer DJ Woods without the Hale attachment, then this should be a no brainer.

Attn Brew Crew - work this deal out.
