1 loss teams. Who you got?

that's a whole new can of worms. personally, i don't know how i'd vote(what methodology i'd use). whether its by record/ladder theory or who would beat who theory. my gut says who would beat who is the best. unfortunately, that isn't how its done. i agree with your poll, but look at how much different it is than the consensus.

for this thread, i was just curious how people would call it if they were the one calling the shot. i have no interest in debating what will likely happen in real life. there are other threads for that:biggrin:

I'd vote who I thought were the best higher than those I didn't think were the best. The system with moving people up just for not losing (not necessarily undefeated) has proven to be very flawed. Unfortunately, we all know this too well. We were not one of the two best teams in the nation last year IMO. I don't think PSU is top two this year. So if I were calling it, a lot of people would be very pissed. :tongue2:

They might be pissed, but I would hope for less bitching by the rest of the nation. And yah, last year we were not one of the two best teams in the NCAA.

I just watched the game day crew and think I heard Fowler say something about you "have to penalize a one loss team for who they lost to and where, dont you?" This is something I have never understood about the polls and especially how it ties into the hate tOSU feeling out there. My take on any poll is that you vote on the likelyhood of any team being able to beat any other team. I.E. your #1 can beat #2 and everybody below them; #2 can beat everybody except #1 and so forth. If this is the case you have to take into account records of course, but you still should be voting on the likelyhood of 1>2>3 etc.

When I make my poll for the BP rankings, I try use a variety of benchmarks for example: the team's strength of schedule, how well they have played against their schedule, margin of victory, did they lose, how many game did they lose, who did they lose to, where did they lose, how much did they lose by, hypothetically how would this team perform against X teams. I feel like the last measure is probably the weakest thing you can measure a team by because you are just guessing. Instead of judging the team based on what they have done, you're taking a complete shot in the dark. I'm not saying the hypothetical matchups shouldn't be considered, but let's be real here, you have to consider what the team has done and not just on what you think they could do.

I don't think you can have only one rule of ranking teams because there are so many things you have to take into account. I think you absolutely have to penalize teams for losing just as you have to penalize teams for playing a weaker schedule than other teams.

you know what will go a long way to solving this? no rankings until at least the 6th week of the season. think about how many issues that would solve.

I would love for them to delay rankings. I think it's pointless to rank teams preseason when you have no idea what they can do and the ranking is basically completely hypothetical. It's also not much more reliable for the first 4-5 weeks of the season when mostly everyone is playing a cakewalk non conference schedule.

Florida did a nice job today, SC may be the best 1 loss team.

I don't know about that. USC hasn't really beat anyone except us, on the other hand Florida has destroyed the likes of LSU and Georgia. Both who were top 5 teams at one point this season. The best 1 loss team, IMO, is Florida. Texas is a VERY close second but the nod, if you ask me, goes to Florida. But the best Two loss team is, yours truly, The Ohio State Buckeyes!

For purely selfish reasons, USC. If we can't be in the national championship game, I'd love to see USC and Penn State play for it and then get an SEC team in the Rose Bowl, if we are fortunate enough to get there.

I hear this argument all the time, but I don't buy it. Where were Alabama, Penn State, Texas, and Texas Tech ranked in the preseason?

24 - Bama (these are AP rankings)
22 - Penn St
12 - Texas Tech
11 - Texas

I fail to see how having no polls for the first few weeks of the season would make for more accurate rankings at this point in the season.

And if there were no 'official' polls, there would be numerous unofficial ones to fill the void, since fans would want to have some indication of where their teams stand.

Florida.

They should be kicking themselves for sleepwalking through the Ole Miss game. This team is the best team collectively since the 2005 Texas team. Only now are they actually playing like it.

From purely a football standpoint, I would love to see FL and
USC in the Championship game.
But for that to happen PSU is going to have to lose.

Don't see any way AL or T Tech stay undefeated.

FL would score a bazillion on any of the Big 12 teams.

Watching that conference makes me appreciate M Jenkins and the rest of our DBs even more.

I would love to see Florida played Texas Tech or Texas. That would be another great game. I think Florida is unstoppable on offense but I don't think there Defense is that physical. They are good but not physical.
