'10 MI DE/TE William Gholston (Michigan State signee)

The first 5+ pages of this thread...OSU was the clear #1 early on and the longer we waited, the more Gholston started talking up Sparty.
The first 4 pages were also before Mark Dantonio coached a game at MSU.

A few weeks into Dantonio's first season at MSU, Gholston said he might commit to the Spartans that weekend.

Mark Dantonio was named the head coach at MSU in Nov. 2006, and coached the entire 2007 season before this thread started on Christmas Day 2007.

based on what?

certainly couldn't have hurt our chances.

it is true that some kids place more value on the schools that offer them first, at least first among the schools that are in their consideration set.

not saying that William is one of these kids, but getting in on a kid sooner has its advantages.

I think the offer to Gholston may have a lot to do with the status of Jamel Turner. I was under the impression that these were both LEO/DE/OLB.
Maybe the delay had more to do with Turner's off the field issues and less to do with William Gholston's on the field abilty. Either way, the staff knows who William is, has known for quite a while to be honest, and knows what they want to do with this recruiting year. I'm not going to speculate why they did what they did because it has worked out pretty well in the past. Lets hope they can keep it going with top guys like Gholston! Go Bucks!:osu:

I didn't even see this post but this crossed my mind as well...the timing was uncanny. I don't think the talent drop off is there at all but I think the two are different players, even if it's the same offer...I see Turner as mostly an OLB, with the ability to put his fist in the dirt on 3rd down. I see Gholston as an every down DE, with the ability to play OLB on 3rd downs, ala Big Vern and Will Smith. Actually, I think Will Smith is a great comparison. I would love to see both end up in this class and I was just hoping this offer was unrelated.

Just a snipet on Gholston during Illinois Nike camp:
Bill Kurelic: QB Chandler Whitmer is attempting to help persuade other elite prospects to join him in Illinois - ESPN

"OSU-MSU battling for Gholston?

Nobody passed the "look test" better than ESPNU 150 Watch List defensive end William Gholston. During a break in the action, Gholston said USC, Ohio State, Michigan State, Alabama, Tennessee and Florida were schools prominent on his list. However, the talk around Memorial Stadium on Saturday was that Gholston's decision could easily come down to the Buckeyes or Spartans."

I don't think that Gholston to MSU is anywhere close to being a lock IMO.

This kids recruitment reminds me of Nick Perry and Ronald Johnson a lot. Those two kids were rumored to be heavy leans to MSU (Perry) and UM (Johnson) respectively for almost a year, and both of them took all their officials, dragged the thing out and announced on NSD for USC.

I just have this feeling that Gholston might do something similar as well. Usually kids from Michigan grow up loving either MSU or Michigan, and once they get one of those offers they are looking for they end things pretty quickly.

IMO Gholston is as close to a "Lock" as there can be. You don't go to a high school prom wearing the colors of a certain school and hat I might add if your not going their. Gholston's recruitment isnt close to being like Nick Perry or Rojo's.
