According to ESPN Insider, it appears that OT Matt James (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) may have excluded Cincinnati from his list of possible college choices. The four-star recruit will announce his decision on Wednesday - National Signing Day.

According to ESPN, James has apparently narrowed his choices to Notre
Dame and Ohio State. The Cincinnati Enquirer has confirmed this development with James's high school coach at St. X.

As was reported here previously, the Bearcats were finalists for the lineman's services along with the Buckeyes and Irish, though his level of interest was questioned when Kelly left for Notre Dame.

At 6'8" and 280 lbs, James is one of the best tackles in the country and was a standout on the line for St Xavier the past two years.

James is teammates with quarterback Luke Massa at St. Xavier. The two visited Notre Dame together this weekend and Massa decommited from UC and signed on with the Irish today.

Signing Day preview: Buckeyes eye top recruits

Matt James ? Offensive Lineman (6?8? 280 Cincinnati, Ohio)
Choices: Ohio State, Notre Dame

James is considered the state?s best lineman after Norwell.

He is ranked as one of the top 100 prospects by both Rivals and Scout, and was a U.S Army All-American.

James attends St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, which hasn?t been as extremely kind to the Buckeyes as most in-state schools. Xavier?s last two prospects who have received offers decided against being Buckeyes, including Kyle Rudolph, who picked Notre Dame. James? teammate and Xavier quarterback Luke Massa recently committed to Notre Dame, leaving many to speculate if that could have an effect on James? decision.

At times throughout the process James has listed Notre Dame as his favorite, before more recently pegging OSU as the team to beat for his services.

A lot will depend on this past weekend, as James made his official visit to Notre Dame. Not much has been said about how his time went with the Fighting Irish, but if it went well, the more recent impression by Notre Dame could seal the deal.

The Lantern needs to do a little fact checking. Kyle Rudolph attended Elder, not St. X.

OSU currently has 1 St. X kid on the roster (Patrick Howe). Notre Dame has zero. Actually, I don't think St. X has sent a kid to ND since Rocky Boiman, which was at least 5 years ago. St. X grad Robbie Schoenhoft left OSU, but he left on good terms with the staff.

If Massa had not been offered by Notre Dame, James would already be committed to Ohio State. Regardless of what the Lantern says, this is not as uphill as a battle as the reporter is making it out to be. At this point, it's about as 50-50 as it can get.

But I was thinking that maybe this Massa stuff is a little overblown. Who's to say the other OL from St. X that is going to walk-on at OSU isn't having as big of an effect on James' decision?

James is very close to Massa, not the walk-on. There was a talk of Massa and James being a package deal to UC. While I don't think that's up high on James' list, it sure didn't hurt when coupled with Kelly's departure to ND. It just added another plus in ND's favor. I personally think ND will be the pick, but that's just an educated guess.

That is debatable. But I do agree I don't see this as an uphill battle, but just that Massa made it real close.
