I don't have any direct contact to either Massa or James, but I do have a few close contacts with St. X ties. Notre Dame was Massa's dream offer. Massa is a great kid (as is James), but even if he is struggling with being 'true' to his commit to UC, I really, really cannot see him turning down the Irish. Additionally, I think these two are a package deal for the Irish. If Massa doesn't switch to ND, James won't go there. A few people told me that Massa has already made up his mind, a few others think he's still on the fence. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Massa will commit to ND simply for the education. He has a long way to go before he gets on the field in a college game.

Like that's the attitude of a competitor, or his mindset. This kid isn't going to look at the situation as being part of a package deal. He's an athlete with the utmost confidence in himself and his abilities.

I may be off base here but most of us 18-25 year olds think we are the bomb at what we do. When a a program like ND reaches out and offers you a scholly, obviously you're going to think that they think you're the bomb too.

Most 18-25 year olds don't say "the bomb" any more either.

This kid was a 3 year starter at St. X, which isn't exactly just another high school program. Some of the comments I've read about Massa act as if he can't throw a ball 10 yards. He may pan out, he may not. He could sit the bench at Cincinnati and he could sit the bench in South Bend, but you can't dismiss the kid before he's even had a chance to compete. Troy Smith was a 'throw in/filler' recruit added at the end of his class (with Zwick) and look how that panned out. Some pessimists didn't think Troy would ever play either. I've seen Massa and Hendrix play and really, it's hard to say who will be a better college player. Hendrix wasn't exactly Peyton Manning in the GCL.

Even if Massa is just in this 'for the education,' you can't blame him for choosing ND over UC. Picking a school for the quality of the degree, isn't that what college is about anyway?!?!? I hope Matt James and Christian Bryant and Rod Smith and all the other recruits are in it for the education as well. I'd like to think the Big Ten and specifically, Ohio State, still has a little credibility when it comes to educating their players (unlike some other conferences, specifically one to the south and east of Columbus).

We should be happy for any of these kids going to college....especially the Ohio kids who grew up with and or around us, whether they end up Buckeyes or RedHawks or Bearcats or Bobcats or Irish or anywhere else (except Michigan).

I have watched him play plenty of times. In the game where I posted the picture of James blocking, Massa got out played by a mile by the Highlands QB who has an Air Force offer. I have know people on the Bearcats staff who even questioned his offer. He is a good kid, a good HS QB on a high profile team. Did Ohio State recruit him, a QB with a division I state title? He is a good leader and will make an okay back up somewhere.

I wasn't there but from what I was told that had more to do with the fact that Highlands had held the QB out prior the X game and as a result, X hadn't game-planned correctly for him. They were focused on Collinsworth instead, and got torched by the QB who they had no idea could run. With that said, I'm not sure how Massa's going to do in college. When I saw him play, he had issues locking onto his primary receiver and taking far too long to go through his progressions, causing him to miss open receivers numerous times. The second half of the playoff game against Elder this year was a prime example of that. But like Coach Specht said in the article posted earlier in this thread, he definitely has the frame to fill out in a college program. If he can sort out the issues I mentioned above he could be a very good college quarterback, but whether he will or not is anyone's guess.

As far as James is concerned, if we're to assume the Massa offer was to attempt a package deal, I think it was more of a hail mary rather than something that would give ND that last nudge to put them over the top.

He still doesn't seem too enthusiastic about tOSU even after a couple of crazy coaching changes in the middle of his recruitment at places where he'll now be a part of painful rebuilding.

I think he'd rather spend his next 4 years bored in Northern Indiana going to church than play for a real national power going to BCS games.

Quite honestly, this kid looks like he's looking for any excuse not to go to tOSU.

either way, best of luck to him.

I think James just found his excuse to not go to OSU

It never seemed to me like he was looking for a reason not to go to Ohio State. He and Hicks seem to be two of the most thoughtful recruits Ohio State has pursued and I'm sure their decisions, whatever they may be, are going to be based on thorough research of each program.

James is thoughtful kid. great kid, in fact. But to find a reason NOT to go to one place instead of WANTING to go to another usually leads to four years of second guessing and regret.
I wish him the best but I would only want the kid if he WANTED to be in Columbus not because he found reasons not to go elsewhere.

I agree. :oh::io:
