'10 OH RB Erick Howard (Ohio U Walk-On)

Saw Howard last Friday at the Jackson vs N. Canton Hoover basketball matchup. I just passed him, and he looked at me for some reason, so I just pointed to my OSU shirt that I had on and said "I expect to see you here," and he just grinned.

I almost said "Get those grades up" but thought better of it lol.

Mr. Football looking hard at Ohio State

Last month, Erick Howard was high on the University of Miami when he visited Columbus.
He toured Ohio State?s facilities. He met with players. He talked with Jim Tressel.
The visit was a hit.
?It was opinion-changing,? Howard said.
That?s good for Ohio State, because Howard is the state?s reigning Mr. Football. He won the award as a junior after rushing for 2,387 yards and 31 touchdowns for North Canton Hoover last season. At 5-foot-10 and 210 pounds, Howard is a little shorter than some coaches would like but makes up for it in toughness. Or, so says Hoover coach Don Hertler.
Howard, for example, plays defense as a linebacker and manages to stay powerful well after halftime.
?He?s a second-half player,? Hertler said.
He likely needs a similar strong late showing, though, to make it to Ohio State or another major program. Hertler said Howard has scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Illinois and Colorado and that most other schools and holding out to monitor Howard?s academic status.
?He?s got a long way to go,? Hertler said.

For recruits, keeping busy is key to sanity

Erick Howard has started playing rec-league basketball.

"I'm rusty," he said. "Terrible."

One could forgive him. He is, after all, Ohio's reigning Mr. Football. He earned the award after rushing for 2,387 yards and 31 touchdowns as a junior at North Canton Hoover High School last season. That was good enough to make him only the second junior to win the award, after Euclid's Robert Smith in 1988.

The recognition will make the next 12 months of Howard's life a mix of flattery and frustration. He'll watch year-older peers sign letters of intent this week and for the next year will hope to handle the calls and letters like he does football games: Stay strong throughout. "He's a second-half player," Hoover coach Don Hertler said.

Recruiting is overwhelming for the best players. That's why you have to applaud Howard (who, by the way, loves Ohio State). He has a small part in the school musical, "South Pacific," and he's in the church choir. He also has the rec league.

For recruits, keeping busy is key to sanity

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TRowu-Bc-c&feature=related]YouTube - Erick Howard Hoover Football 08 Highlight[/ame]

Jr. film.

Nice blend of straight line speed and power. Very tough kid to bring down, but still has trouble getting to the outside. Not a dynamic back like Beanie or Clarett, but is probably good enough to earn an offer if he gets his grades in order.

BN $ - Bucknuts TV: Erick Howard In Action

If he takes care of everything else, I would be surprised if OSU didn't offer...has decent speed, unbelievable balance (he just refuses to go down sometimes...even when he is obviously gassed), great ability to find the seam...don't get to see a whole lot of lateral movement in this film (most of these highlights are of him ripping off big plays up the middle) and when you do see him make a lateral cut it is not explosive, but I don't care about that...that is obviously not the type of back he is going to be.

What is truly amazing is that he was N. Canton's offense. They literally had nothing else. 8 man fronts was a given, 9 a challenge.

I just love him as a player. He is someone who you know will do better than people project. The only issue I see is if he can run out of the shotgun as N. Canton's offense is heavy on I formation, downhill running.
