Evaluation

September, 2009: Cody is a long and athletic combo post. He is thin but skilled inside. Cody is much like his brother (Tyler) at North Carolina except he is a little more perimeter oriented. He has solid athleticism which is very intriguing. He can be a solid rebounder and can finish above the rim on the break. His athletic ability allows him to run the floor very well. He is skilled as a post player and can step out to 17 feet and shoot the ball. He can play either power forward or center at the next level. Defensively he can be a solid shotblocker when motivated. Zeller needs to add strength and be a little more aggressive inside. He has the talent, once the light comes on totally. The sky is the limit for Cody.

November, 2007: The youngest of the Zeller brothers (Luke is at Notre Dame and Tyler is going to North Carolina), Cody is on track to be just as good a prospect. Having grown six inches in the last year, Zeller is still getting used to his body. He is the most advanced shooter of the Zeller brothers at this stage, but with his lack of strength, his effectiveness is often limited when playing against good competition. Zeller is not afraid to mix it up and he is not shy from contact, he just needs to continue to get strong so that he can finish and grab some of the rebounds that he gets his hands on. Like his older brothers, Cody is skilled, can run and knows how to play. Weight gain, strength gain and continued development of his skills will all come in time and if he continues to work hard, he will become and excellent prospect down the line.

Zeller name enough to bring coaches

For several years now, a who's who of college coaches have made the trek to Daviess County to get a better look at talented post players named Zeller.

This fall is no different, as the recruitment of Washington High School junior Cody Zeller continues to pick up steam.

"He's bigger, stronger and more explosive than he was last year," said Washington coach Gene Miiller. "He's just continued to get better and better."

The 6-9 Zeller -- the youngest of three brothers in a family that includes Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Basketball winners Luke (2005) and Tyler (2008) -- had a strong showing this summer playing for Indiana Elite One. That promise has drawn him scholarship offers from Butler, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio State and Purdue, and interest from Michigan, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Stanford, UCLA and Wake Forest.

"I think at least one coach from all those schools has either come in during open gym or plans on coming in," Zeller said.

Though he has plenty of options already, Zeller said he isn't near a decision. He added that his brothers' choice of schools -- Luke to Notre Dame and Tyler to North Carolina -- wouldn't impact his decision.

"I'm not anywhere close," he said. "I want to make a few official visits before I decide, and I can't do that until my senior year. I'm a long ways away."

Zeller is enjoying taking in some of college football's better venues this fall, making unofficial visits for football games at Notre Dame and Ohio State. He also visited Bloomington last weekend for the IU-Ohio State game.

Butler doesn't have a major football program, but the Bulldogs have definitely attracted Zeller's attention. He took an unofficial visit to Butler last month.

"The coaches and players are what makes them a great school," Zeller said. "I think it would be so much fun to play for coach (Brad) Stevens. They play hard, and I think I'd be a good fit for the style that they play."

UNC, IU, Iowa host Hatchet star

Instead of watching late night with Dave or Conan or Craig Ferguson or Jimmy Fallon, Cody Zeller spent "Late Night with Roy" on Friday.

Zeller, a 6-foot-91/2, 205-pound junior from Washington High School, made an unofficial visit to the University of North Carolina as the defending NCAA champion Tar Heels opened practice under coach Roy Williams.

Cody's older brother, Tyler, is a sophomore at UNC.

"It definitely helps having a brother on the team. I'm definitely looking forward to it," Cody said before leaving for Chapel Hill. "I went to 'Late Night with Roy' last year and it was a lot of fun. It will be a fun night."

Cody, who cannot make official visits until he is a senior, made an unofficial visit to the University of Iowa last weekend. He has also made unofficial visits to Indiana University, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Butler, and he said he might make a trip to Michigan.

Zeller said he gets no pressure from Tyler to attend North Carolina or from Luke to attend Notre Dame. Luke, who was a senior for the Irish last year, is currently playing professionally in Japan.

"The biggest thing is getting a feel for what the coaches are like and being around the players for a while during a football game (with the exception of Butler) and see the fan base and the academics," said Zeller, who averaged 15 points and 7.2 rebounds last season for the Hatchets and is ranked the No. 35 junior in the nation by Rivals.com.

Cody Zeller is being recruited as a basketball player. But right now, he?s just enjoying watching football games.

Zeller taking unofficial visits
By Mike Myers, Sports Writer

Cody Zeller is being recruited as a basketball player. But right now, he?s just enjoying watching football games.

The Washington Hatchet junior center and one of the nation?s most prized recruits in the class of 2011, Zeller has been busy making unofficial visits this fall to colleges he?s interested in playing for. And who just happen to be hosting big time college football games at the same time.

Already this season, Zeller has seen Ohio State host Southern California and travel to Bloomington to face the Indiana Hoosiers; Notre Dame entertain Michigan State at Notre Dame Stadium; and Michigan play at Iowa. This Saturday, his unofficial football odyssey will take him to Ann Arbor for the Big Ten Showdown between the Wolverines and Penn State. Last weekend, he traveled to Chapel Hill for a reunion with his brother Tyler and to catch an alumni basketball game as well as the Tar Heels? gridiron battle with the Citadel.

But make no mistake about it, these visits aren?t just of the kind to make famed college football announcer Keith Jackson envious. The 6-9 1/2 Zeller ? who led a 21-3 Big 8 Conference and sectional championship team with 15.0 ppg and 7.1 rpg despite missing five games with a broken bone in his hand last season ? has a purpose for visiting all of these schools.

?I?m a big football fan, but all those schools are ones that I?m interested in. It gives me a chance to see a football game and see the campus, check out the fan base and tradition,? Zeller said Tuesday after school.

The seemingly ongoing recruiting process for the Zeller family that began with Luke Zeller in the early part of this decade and continued with Tyler Zeller has now fallen squarely on the shoulders of the youngest member of the Zeller hoops dynasty. Just as they did in past years for the older brothers, college coaches are making what is now a very familiar trek to Washington to catch Cody in open gyms at the Hatchet House. With Zeller not playing a fall sport this year, he?s been in the gym often, and several schools have sent representatives during the fall recruiting period, including a recent early morning visit from University of Florida head coach Billy Donovan.

Thus far, Zeller has scholarship offers from six Division I schools ? Indiana, Purdue, Butler, Iowa, Ohio State, and Florida. In addition, he is getting recruiting interest from the two schools who were winners in the previous Zeller basketball lottery in Notre Dame (Luke) and North Carolina (Tyler) along with Michigan, UCLA, Stanford, and Wake Forest.

Cody says the experience of his brothers is helping him this time around.

?It definitely helps. I went on a lot of the visits with Luke and Tyler, I was getting to know the coaches before they even starting contacting me,? said Zeller. ?I knew a lot about the colleges before they even starting recruiting me.?

Big-time programs recruit Cody, but 6-9 junior's Washington team focuses on 3A semistate date with Danville, 6-10 Carroll
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: March 19, 2010

As long as there is a Zeller to be pursued, big-time college men's basketball coaches will continue to wear out a path to Washington, Ind.

Cody Zeller, a 6-9 high school junior, is following in the footsteps of older brothers Luke (played at Notre Dame) and Tyler (a sophomore at North Carolina) as one of the top post prospects in the 2011 class. Visitors to Washington's Hatchet House this season included North Carolina coach Roy Williams, Purdue's Matt Painter, Indiana's Tom Crean, Ohio State's Thad Matta, Butler's Brad Stevens, Illinois' Bruce Weber and Michigan's John Beilein, among others.

"He's had a good year," Washington coach Gene Miiller said. "I really thought he's made great strides from last year. He's much stronger and has improved his post game."

Zeller's Washington team -- ranked No. 6 in Class 3A with a 21-3 record -- will play top-ranked Danville (25-1) in a 1 p.m. semistate game Saturday at Southport. Danville is led by 6-10 Purdue recruit Travis Carroll.

"They are different kinds of players," Miiller said. "Travis is mainly a low-post player, a very good low-post player. That's his game.

"Cody is a little more versatile. He can go inside and play the post, but he can also step outside and put it on the floor."

With 50 points in two wins last week in the regional over Corydon Central and Boonville, Zeller broke Steve Bouchie's scoring record for a junior at Washington. Zeller is averaging 20.8 points and 10.4 rebounds.

"It's going to be a team battle," Miiller said when asked about the Zeller-Carroll matchup. "Those guys are obviously important, but Danville has several other good players and we have a point guard, Sam Gines, who started on our 2008 state championship team. Both teams have a lot of options."

Zeller said earlier this season that he has scholarship offers from Butler, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio State and Purdue.

Zeller very interested in Butler

Updated: Thursday, 08 Apr 2010

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.(WTHI) - The Zeller family has confirmed that Washington junior star basketball player Cody Zeller is highly interested in Butler. The Zeller's told Sports 10 that Cody liked the Bulldogs from time they started recruiting him and well before their national title runner-up finish.

The 6'10" Hatchet big man has as many as 10-12 scholarship offers, inclduing offers from Purdue, IU, Florida and Ohio State. According to the Zeller family, Cody hopes to narrow his list down to five schools by the end of the summer.

This past season Zeller averaged more than 20 points and 10 rebounds a game in guiding Washington the the Class 3A state championship.

Youngest brother of Hoosier hoops family considering Butler

THE INDIANAPOLIS STAR ? April 8, 2010

Could the "Butler Way" be the "Zeller Way"?

It hasn't been, at least in the first two go-rounds of recruiting for the family from Washington, Ind. Luke Zeller chose Notre Dame after winning a state championship and Indianapolis Star Indiana Mr. Basketball in 2005. Tyler Zeller picked North Carolina after notching the same team and individual achievements as his brother in '08.

But the Bulldogs are very much in the picture with Cody Zeller, the youngest brother. The 6-10 junior has a scholarship offer from Butler and said this week that he is "highly interested" in the program.

"Their style of play is right down my alley," said Zeller, who had 20 points and 26 rebounds in Washington's 65-62 overtime win over Gary Wallace in the Class 3A State Finals on March 27. "They play a lot like my high school team. They emphasize defense and take good shots on offense."

Adidas May Classic: Q&A with Cody Zeller

Everyone wants to know what is up with Cody Zeller. Is he a Butler lean? Where does IU stand in his recruitment? Where is he in his recruiting process? Here's what I picked up from him Saturday during an interview with two or three other media people there, too.

(First, talk about where you are coming into this weekend in terms of your recruitment?)

"Not a whole lot has changed. There has been a few schools that have gotten involved like Virginia Tech, Texas, Wake Forest. That's kind of why I'm leaving my recruiting open this summer is to see who is interested in me. I plan to narrow it down at the end of the summer.''

(So it doesn't sound like you're really trying to limit the number of schools right now but rather continuing to see what schools are interested)

"Depending on how I play this summer and who gets interested then I'll narrow it down to five from there at the end of the summer.''

(You're still thinking about making all five of your visits?)

"That's the plan right now.''

An update on 2011 Washington forward Cody Zeller
by Zachary Osterman in Recruiting | May 13th, 2010

It’s already been a busy and successful AAU season for Cody Zeller and Indiana Elite, and May isn’t yet half over. Zeller and his teammates — several of whom rank high on IU’s wish list for the 2011 and 2012 classes — already notched wins in two tournaments, including a revenge win over St. Louis Gameface at the Fort Wayne Run-N-Slam earlier this month.

Individually, Zeller is also using the summer to refine several parts of his game that he might not so easily improve during high school season.

“In high school, I was always being guarded by two and three guys,” Zeller told Inside the Hall. “It gives me a chance to work on post moves and drives and things like that against a different player, a different type of defender.”

Of course, there are plenty of Indiana fans who probably wouldn’t care if Zeller skipped his last season at Washington High (where he will be defending a state title) and just came to Bloomington in the fall.

Zeller, like his brothers Luke and Tyler before him, is an incredibly appealing prospect, particularly with his special blend of size and ability. Getting a commitment from Zeller would represent a benchmark recruiting win for coach Tom Crean, who has made few bones about focusing on closing Indiana’s borders when it comes to in-state high school talent.

Zeller, Plumlee's teammate on the Indiana Elite AAU team, has made several trips to the Smith Center to see his brother, Tyler, play for North Carolina. He has followed Tyler as a star player at Washington (Ind.) High School.

Another brother, Luke, played at Notre Dame, but Cody Zeller said that neither Notre Dame nor North Carolina holds an edge now because of his brothers.

"It doesn't have a whole lot of effect," he said. "If I came to Carolina, I'd play with Tyler for only one year. It helps a little bit because I already know the coaches and what the facilities are like, but not a whole lot.

"It's just one year (with Tyler). It's not all four."

UNC and Notre Dame are recruiting Zeller. So are Indiana, Butler, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and others. Zeller said he is looking at 10 to 15 schools now but wants to cut the list to five by the end of summer and set his official visits.

He has a list of issues to address on his campus visits, including how he'll fit into the program and what players are already in it.

"Just getting to know the coaches, because that's who you're going to be spending a lot of time with," he said. "I want to see the faculty, the facilities and the education I'll get."

Zeller watched Notre Dame and North Carolina because of his brothers but doesn't have a favorite team. Staying at home won't be an issue; going away is not a necessity.

Zeller said that his brothers will not meddle in his recruitment but also that he has a feeling he might be hear from one or both come decision time.

"Both of my brothers are really supportive," he said. "I can go to them with any questions, and they're not going to be biased either way. Maybe when the time comes to make my decision, they'll jump in and try to persuade me a little bit more."

Washington (Ind.) High School center Cody Zeller is considered one of the top big men and among the top 50 overall prospects nationally in the Class of 2011.

But he's one of the hardest to read.

Zeller, whose two brothers played their recruitment close to the vest, has been keeping coaches and fans guessing throughout his recruitment.

The 6-foot-10, 205-pound Zeller has offers from a bunch of schools, including Indiana, Butler, Florida, Michigan, Texas, Wake Forest, Iowa, Purdue, Notre Dame and Ohio State. He's also talking to North Carolina where his brother, Tyler, plays.

"I'm still taking my time and just getting to know the coaches," Zeller said. "Nothing has changed too much, I just need to get to know the coaches better."

After watching his brothers make their decisions, Zeller said he has a little better perspective than perhaps some elite recruits on how the decision will go down.

"You just have to kind of go with your heart in the end," the younger Zeller said. "My brothers have been telling me that one day you will just know when it's the right fit."

Zeller measured 6-10 without shoes at the National Basketball Players Association top-100 camp and finished fourth in that camp in scoring at 14.3 a game.

"What a great experience," he said. "There's so much talent here, it makes me better."

Zeller attracts all-star coaching cast to local event
By Kyle Neddenriep

Cody Zeller was one of the main attractions on the first day of the college coaches evaluation period.

The 6-10 senior-to-be from Washington, Ind., didn't disappoint a large audience of big-name coaches in the Adidas Invitational at North Central High School, scoring 27 points on Tuesday afternoon in a 69-64 win over Dream Vision, a team based out of California.

Zeller said after the game that he still plans to take all five of his official visits in the fall, but didn't offer a hint as to which five he was considering. Coaches watching his game included North Carolina's Roy Williams, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Butler's Brad Stevens, Indiana's Tom Crean, West Virginia's Bob Huggins, Kansas' Bill Self, Louisville's Rick Pitino, Ohio State's Thad Matta and a host of others.

Zeller scores 27 points in front of nation's elite
A who's who of college basketball coaches watch 6-10 Washington star
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: July 7, 2010

After putting on a show for nearly one-third of the Division I college coaches in the country -- and several of the most accomplished -- Cody Zeller didn't offer many clues into his closely-watched recruitment.

The 6-10 senior-to-be from Washington, Ind., scored 27 points for his 17-and-under Indiana Elite team in its first pool play game at the Adidas Invitational at North Central on Tuesday. He played in front of a crowd that included, among others, Butler's Brad Stevens, Indiana's Tom Crean, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, West Virginia's Bob Huggins, Kansas' Bill Self, Louisville's Rick Pitino and Ohio State's Thad Matta.

Not all of those coaches are after Zeller. But they might be after Tuesday's game. The versatile forward scored in a variety of ways: dunks, post moves and outside jumpers.

Zeller said he took a quick look around to see who was in the gym.

"The coaches usually let me know they are going to be there," said Zeller, who helped Washington to a Class 3A title as a junior. "I know they are busy and have a lot of recruits to watch, but it means a lot to know that they come to all the games."

Zeller said the process "is starting to even out" although he quickly added that "anyone who wants to get interested can contact me." He said North Carolina, where his brother Tyler plays, has not offered but will tell him by the end of the month if it has a scholarship.

Zeller still plans to take all five of his official visits in the fall before making a decision. He has offers from Butler, Florida, Indiana, Iowa, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Purdue.

Another Zeller honored to be in recruiting hot seat
Posted: July 7, 2010

Unlike virtually everyone else on the planet, I'm not going to tell basketball mega-recruit Cody Zeller where to attend college.

Although, in the interest of full disclosure, I am an IU graduate, and they were the best four-plus years of my life, and the academics are extraordinary (or so I'm told) and the social life is without peer in the galaxy.

Oh, and the young ladies in Bloomington . . . ?

But no, I'm not going to do that.

No, sir.

"Everybody has advice," said Cody's mother, Lorri, smiling, standing along a wall in North Central's gymnasium during the first day of the Adidas Invitational. "I hear it when I go to the grocery, everywhere. A lot of IU people. A lot of Purdue. I had one woman, her cousin's son went to Wake Forest and had a good experience, so she thinks Cody should go there."

In the end, Cody Zeller, the senior big man from Washington, Ind., and the "little" brother to college players Luke (Notre Dame) and Tyler (North Carolina), has to go where he feels is the best fit academically and athletically.

Right now, he's cut his list down to a mere 11 schools -- Indiana, Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame, Iowa, Michigan, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Texas, Virginia Tech and Florida. Next, he will try to find time during the busy AAU summer hoops schedule to whittle the list to five. He will take five official visits this fall, then share his decision.

Cody Zeller is poised to follow his brothers into basketball stardom

July 7, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS ? Some mothers focus on square footage or d?cor when they're trying to select a new home for their husband and three children.

Quantcast

Lorri Zeller remembers that another item topped her Must-Have List when the Zeller family moved from Winona, Minn., to Washington, Ind., nearly 17 years ago.

"We met the Realtor, and he only showed us one home with a basketball hoop," she said. "We said, 'We'll take that one.'"

Mother knew best. Had to have a driveway goal so her husband, Steve, could choose teams with their three sons -- Luke, Tyler and Cody -- for rousing games of two-on-two that finally had to stop when Dad kept coming inside with broken glasses.

"Somebody would always come in bleeding," Lorri Zeller said. "When Steve would guard them, he started to use a football blocking pad."

Interest in Zeller skyrockets
Washington player gets big-time consideration

Cody Zeller isn't one to bask in adulation ? even if the adoring glances are coming from such college basketball coaching luminaries as Indiana's Tom Crean, Purdue's Matt Painter, Butler's Brad Stevens, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, North Carolina's Roy Williams, Kansas' Bill Self, Ohio State's Thad Matta and Louisville's Rick Pitino.

Zeller, a 6-foot-10 center-forward entering his senior year at Washington High School, wowed those in attendance as a member of the Indiana Elite 17-and-under AAU team at the Adidas Invitational last week at Indianapolis North Central High Sch School. Nearly one-third of the NCAA Division I coaches in the nation were in attendance.

"It was a fun experience playing against the best competition all across the country," he said. "All those coaches watching was just icing on the cake."

If he ever aspires to cockiness, Cody said his parents, Steve and Lorri, and older brothers Luke and Tyler keep him in line.

"I have a good support group with my brothers and my parents," said Cody, who is ranked as the No. 35 senior in the nation by Rivals.com. "They've been through it a long time and they know what they're saying."

Zeller averaged 20.5 points and 11.1 rebounds and 2.8 blocks in leading the Hatchets to the Class 3A state championship and a 23-3 record. But he wants more.

?The biggest part is trying to get better,? he said. ?I try to keep working every day, even though everybody is telling me how great I am.?

Zeller is considered great enough to basically pick the college of his choice.

Still in the running are IU, Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, North Carolina and Florida. Keeping mum on his future, Zeller plans to whittle the list to five before school starts in mid-August and will visit those schools this fall. He cannot sign a national letter of intent until the November signing period.

Zeller follows family through recruiting circus
Updated: Jul 10, 2010

Indianapolis - Following in his older brothers' footsteps, Cody Zeller is the most sought after senior basketball prospect in the state.

Some of the biggest names in college basketball almost salivate as they watch the talent on display at North Central High School. Most of the coaches have their eyes on Zeller, the big kid from Washington, Indiana. The 6'10" Zeller is the biggest recruiting prize in the state among this year's seniors.

Zeller has plenty of college options. Almost every coach in the gym this weekend has - or would - offer him a scholarship. He doesn't have anything to prove to them at this point. The coaches just want Zeller to know they're watching.

"I've kinda gotten used to that. They've been coming to see me since I was young. Having two brothers go before me, they've always been around," Zeller said.

Ind.'s Zeller gets offer from North Carolina
By Jeff Rabjohns
Posted: July 12, 2010

Cody Zeller now knows for certain North Carolina wants him.

The Tar Heels did the expected over the weekend, offering the Washington, Ind., center a scholarship.

"I've been kind of waiting for it," Zeller said this morning. "I don't feel like they're behind at all. I said from Day One, I would wait until later to decide. I was pretty happy to get the offer."

The 6-11 Zeller, who will be a senior this year, is one of the top big man prospects in the nation.

North Carolina coach Roy Williams sat center court, front row for one of Zeller's games last week at the Adidas Invitational at North Central, a clear indication of the Tar Heels' interest. Williams also had his entire on-the-road staff in Indy for a while.

Zeller is the youngest of three brothers, the previous two both Indiana Mr. Basketball winners. Luke played at Notre Dame and Tyler is heading into his junior year at North Carolina.

"If we get on the topic of recruiting, he'll talk about Carolina, but he's not calling and recruiting me every day," Cody Zeller said. "If it comes up, he might say something."

Zeller's approach to his recruitment remains the same: He will keep his options completely open until picking five schools for official visits this fall. He also is being recruited by Indiana, Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida and a number of other major programs .Zeller is ranked No. 35 in the nation, one of eight nationally ranked seniors from Indiana.
