'11 IN PF Cody Zeller (Indiana Signee)

Cody Zeller, Washington (IN), Indiana Elite: If this wasn?t best Zeller has played to-date in an AAU event, it would have to be a close second. In the first high profile game of the adidas Invitational against Dream Vision, Zeller came out firing on all cylinders. He knocked down shots from the perimeter. He found open teammates for easy buckets. He dunked. He finished with contact in the lane. He showed excellent footwork and agility for his size. If there was any doubt that Zeller is a five-star talent, it was erased. One interesting observation from Zeller?s interview that hasn?t been publicized much was his answer to the question of what?s changed since his brothers went through the recruiting process. He made a point to mention that certain schools have built new facilities in recent years, which is a good indication that Cook Hall is at least on his mind.

Zeller Carolina-bound?
North Carolina Tar Heels

Update: Although talented 2011 big Cody Zeller hasn't officially narrowed down his list, Clint Jackson (Rivals.com's ACC analyst) spoke to sources close to 6-foot-9 Zeller and the word is the decision is ultimately between Butler, UNC and Indiana. Being a fan of all schools not in the big six conferences, we can't help but think that if Butler can land Zeller, he would have to be the highest-ever ranked recruit to call Hinkle Field House his home court.

********

Marshall Plumlee and Cody Zeller are AAU teammates in Indiana, but they have roots in North Carolina. Marshall recently decided to join his brothers Miles and Mason at Duke. North Carolina (keeping up with the Krzyzewskis, no doubt) has made an official scholarship offer to Cody, whose older brother Tyler will be a junior for the Tar Heels this season.

"I've been kind of waiting for it," Zeller told the Indianapolis Star. "I don't feel like they're behind at all. I said from Day One, I would wait until later to decide. I was pretty happy to get the offer."

Zeller is still considering Indiana, Purdue, Butler, Notre Dame (where he could follow brother Luke), Ohio State and Florida. While his signing with UNC is far from definite, it does offer certain advantages.

For one thing, it's no secret that the Tar Heels are in sudden need of big men. The departure of the Wear twins for UCLA leaves Roy Williams with just Cody's older brother, slender sophomore John Henson and one-year rental Justin Knox in the frontcourt for next season. If the younger Zeller comes aboard, he can spend a season learning from his sibling, then take over as a starter when Ty graduates. He would also have the support of Henson and James McAdoo in his second season (should such a thing occur).

The other schools on Cody's list will still get a fair shake -- he's promised to trim his list to five and visit each -- but the official offer from UNC cuts the available slots down to four. It sounds like UNC is ahead of the game so far.

Recruiting Profile: Cody Zeller

"Zeller looks to have added strength. His upper body looks to be more defined and he is playing much more physical at times. Zeller did a great job of running the floor on the break and displayed great hands. He pulled in a few tough passes on a dead run and scored with ease. Zeller work extremely hard to post. He was low and provided the passer with a great target. Zeller also displayed the ability to repost when he kicked out the ball back to the passer. Zeller scored with jump hooks over his left shoulder, power drop steps and drop off passes. Zeller has a nice touch and can finish with either hand. He also drew fouls and converted on the free throw line as well. Zeller rebounded everything in his area with two hands, made the offensive player work for every inch when he defended the low post and played in a stance on the perimeter when he had to help on screens. Zeller has a good basketball IQ and he played with excellent energy and urgency throughout the game. Zeller is big, talented and skilled with great upside."

Recruiting wars: Who's winning?
Posted: August 1, 2010

Rabjohns: Let's get right to the biggest recruiting story in Indiana: Cody Zeller. He's a stud, a top-50 player nationally who will have an instant impact in college. I know Indiana University fans won't be thrilled by this, but it appears the Hoosiers are just part of the pack chasing the 6-10 big man from Washington. They have a chance, for sure, but it seems clear North Carolina is in the best position at this point. His brother Tyler plays there and absolutely loves it. The Zellers trust the coaching staff, and trust is a big thing for Cody. It looks like Carolina is in good position, unless he picks Butler, another coaching staff he likes and trusts.
Zoom

Neddenriep: I'm not ready to pick a favorite for Zeller, but I wouldn't count out Butler. Brad Stevens just picked up a shooter (Andy Smeathers) and a point guard (Jackson Aldridge) for the 2011 class. He has another shooter (Kellen Dunham) coming in the 2012 class. His recruiting pitch is this: "Hey, Cody, we're assembling all the pieces around you for another run. All we need is you in the middle of it all."

Zeller's NBA plans hinge on his degree?

The Zellers are used to putting up big numbers in the classroom (the lowest high school GPA among Luke, Tyler and Cody was a 3.999). [Cody] stands to make millions in the NBA, perhaps as soon as this summer. For now, though, Zeller keeps the "student" in student-athlete as a business major with a 3.44 grade-point average. ... When Zeller can finish his management degree has been a subject of speculation because it might affect his decision to enter the NBA. One report said he could earn a degree by the end of the upcoming summer session. Others think it may be in January 2014 after the first semester of his junior year. ... Zeller declined to discuss when he plans to graduate.

If he cannot finish a Management major from the University of Phoenix, I would be shocked. Having said that, I don't know if he is physically ready for the NBA.

1. I'm not sure how easy Phoenix class credits would transfer to IU. He probable doesn't want an online degree from Phoenix.
2. Either way, it is pretty impressive if he graduates this calender year (he's only been at IU two seasons).
3. It is nice to see a NBA caliber division 1A basketball player taking academics seriously; and yeah I know Craft does too.
4. re: I don't know if he is physically ready for the NBA...Probably not; however, if you are going to get lottery pick money; (unfortunately) sometimes the player has to go ahead and take it to guarantee both his and his family's long term financial security. With that being said I have no idea how financially "well off" his family is.

Well he has 2 brothers in the NBA right now. So if mom and pop are living in a storage unit and eating Ramen noodles cooked on a hotplate like some hardships like to portray, then the issues are likely about more than money. I would advise Zeller, Olidepo, and Burke to take the 1st round money.:tongue2:

I was just sort of kidding about the University of Phoenix but you have to admit that management is not the toughest major at a university. I graduated with a degree in business so I know a little bit about the type of courses that a managing major would have to take.

I see that MONT address the financial issues. The Zeller family is not hurting for money unless they got some very bad financial advice:)

By the way, I also think that Hardaway, Robinson, and McGary should chase that 2nd round money and go pro as well.
