Pike guard Teague's college decision gets pushed back
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: May 17, 2009

Bloomington, Ind. -- Marquis Teague is nearing the day when he'll make a decision on college. Until then, every move of the Pike High School junior-to-be will be watched closely -- including his wardrobe.

Teague said not to make too much out of the fact that he wore an Indiana sweatshirt to the adidas May Classic at Assembly Hall on Saturday.

"It's just something one of my dad's friends gave me," Teague said with a laugh. "I just wear it."

Teague had previously said he would announce his college intentions in June, but his father, Shawn Teague, said Saturday night those plans have changed and it will likely be "after July."

Teague is playing for the U-17 USA Developmental National team and will be in Colorado and Argentina most of June. The travel ball schedule fires back up in July.

"We haven't had time to really sit down and evaluate everything and with the schedule so crazy for June and July, we probably won't be able to until after that," Shawn Teague said.

The 6-1 point guard, considered one of the top 10 prospects in the 2011 class, said Kentucky has joined the list of schools he is considering (although they have yet to offer), joining Cincinnati, IU, Louisville, Ohio State, Purdue and Wake Forest.

Teague, the younger brother of Wake Forest standout Jeff Teague, wouldn't list a favorite among the seven but was asked about IU.

"I've been talking to (Indiana basketball coach Tom Crean) since he got there," he said. "I like his program and it's close to home. I like Indiana."

Indianapolis prospects on different paths
Teague close to picking school; Ferguson is not
By Jody Demling ? [email protected] ? May 17, 2009

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Two of the biggest high school basketball stars from Indianapolis are headed in opposite directions when it comes to recruiting.

Pike junior-to-be Marquis Teague has narrowed his list of colleges and said he will make a decision in June, while Lawrence North senior-to-be and former University of Kentucky commitment Dominique Ferguson now has a lot of suitors.

Both are playing this weekend in the adidas May Classic.

It was assumed by scouting analysts that Louisville was the favorite to land the 6-foot-2 Teague, whose father -- Shawn -- played for U of L coach Rick Pitino at Boston University.

But Teague said yesterday that he has "no favorites."

Teague said he was looking at U of L, Indiana, Kentucky, Cincinnati, Ohio State, Purdue and Wake Forest. His brother, Jeff, played this past season at Wake Forest.

"I want to make my decision in June," he said. "I don't know (what school) yet. I'm still talking it over with my family. But I want to make it next month for sure."

Where does Teague land? If Pike's Teague -- recently lauded as the No. 2 prospect in the country in the 2011 class by rivals.com -- is leaning to one particular school, he has kept it to himself. Of his six favorites (Cincinnati, IU, Louisville, Purdue, Ohio State and Wake Forest) it has been rumored he likes the Hoosiers and Cardinals the most. Teague dismisses such talk, saying he hasn't narrowed his list.

Jackson, Teague lead elite 2010 point guard class
Michael DeCourcy
Wednesday, Jul. 8, 2009

AKRON, OHIO ? When young Marquis Teague is playing basketball, he says, "I want to be the quarterback out there." The quarterback is the essential position in all of American sports, the one player even casual fans recognize because he wields the ultimate control over the game he plays.

Point guards have to settle for metaphors and similes. They want to be "like" the quarterback, but their position does not carry the same cache with the sporting public. Even though it should.

You want your team to reach the Final Four or win an NCAA championship? Worry over whether it lands the country's best point guard, not that 6-11 center.

As college coaches continue their odyssey across the U.S. to evaluate prospects in the next few recruiting classes, the players they should pursue most eagerly are the elite point guards, among them: Kyrie Irving, a senior from Elizabeth, N.J.; Brandon Knight, a senior from Ft. Lauderdale; Joe Jackson, a senior from Memphis and Teague, a junior from Indianapolis.

How important are they? Nine of the past 13 NCAA champions were directed by McDonald's All-American point guards, from Mike Bibby with 1997 Arizona to Ty Lawson with 2009 North Carolina.

Six of the past eight Final Four teams had McDonald's All-Americans running the point. Michigan State's Kalin Lucas was one of the two exceptions on that Final Four list, but he was a star recruit who just missed McDonald's honors and became Big Ten player of the year by his sophomore season.

"Being a point guard, one thing you've got to be is the general on the floor," Lucas said Tuesday night after playing with other college counselors at the LeBron James Skills Academy. "You've got to get your guys going, make sure you play hard, because really your teammates feed off of you."

When Lawson attended the old Nike All-American Camp at Indianapolis in July 2005, his matchup with Kansas' Sherron Collins of Chicago captured the attention of nearly everyone in the gym. Each would lead his team to an NCAA title within three years. Derrick Rose was a star attraction on the 2006 July circuit and got Memphis to the national championship game as a freshman.

This is a great time to be point guard hunting. The 2010 class is loaded with exceptional playmakers. Scout.com ranks eight players at that position in its top 30 prospects overall. It's nearly as deep in 2011, with Teague and Florida recruit Austin Rivers among six point guards in Rivals.com's top 20 prospects.

"I've been thinking when I come out and go to college, I just want to come out and lead my team, make sure everything is going right on the floor," Teague said. "I want to win a lot of games, make the Final Four, win a national championship. That's the dream. That's what I want to do."

Teague could be the younger twin of his brother, Jeff, who was drafted out of Wake Forest by the Atlanta Hawks after two college seasons. But Marquis is considered more of a natural point guard, which is why elite programs such as Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville?and, indeed, Wake?targeted him earlier in his career. The process has gone on long enough that he expects to make a commitment this fall, with two full high school seasons still to play.

"I want to go to a school that plays my tempo," Teague said. "I want to stay close to home. And the coaches I have the best relationship with, coaches that are going to motivate me and push me and not just let me slack off and be a prima donna.

"You've got to have some great players around you if you want to play at a high level. College basketball is no joke. You need great players around you."

Indianapolis Pike's Marquis Teague 'so good it's ridiculous'
By Jody Demling • [email protected] • July 9, 2009

bilde

CLEVELAND — Indianapolis Pike High School junior-to-be Marquis Teague looked like a normal point guard working the basketball down the court in the King City Classic at Cleveland State University on Wednesday afternoon.

But then Teague — one of the top prospects in the country — did his thing. He faked a jab-step right, crossed over and went left, darted past three defenders, cut back to the right side of the lane and dished a nifty underhanded pass to teammate Jared Sullinger for a dunk.

There was a lot of chatter and movement in the stands where most of the top-level NCAA DivisionI college coaches were sitting — and smiling. Even NBA superstar LeBron James, sitting close to the court, looked amazed.
"That was an NBA All-Star type move," said one college coach whose team finished in the top 20 last season.
Teague made play after eye-catching play during the two-day event for some of the nation's best high school basketball players. And every time he made one, there was Indiana coach Tom Crean watching from the front row and Louisville coach Rick Pitino not far behind in a visible position.

"He's so good it's ridiculous," said Sullinger, who is considered one of the standouts in the Class of 2010 and has committed to Ohio State.

The 6-foot-2, 165-pound Teague has moved up to No.2 in the Rivals.com national rankings for the Class of 2011 and is rated No.6 by Scout.com.
He was one of the most impressive players at the LeBron James Skills Academy and the King City event, and his recruitment is a war among Louisville, Indiana, Wake Forest, Purdue and Ohio State.

"He's a Chris Paul-type player," recruiting analyst Ron Briscoe said. "He is really, really, really good.

Pike's Teague keeps No. 2 ranking in perspective
ranked No. 2 in nation in 2011 class by one service, nears college decision
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: July 10, 2009.

Shawn Teague just shakes his head when asked about his son's recent designation by rivals.com as the No. 2 basketball prospect in the country for the 2011 class.
Marquis Teague, the
standout Pike High School guard, is one of the most highly-sought recruits in the country.

"I don't like to see that," Shawn Teague said of the ranking. "But Marquis does a good job handling it. He knows that those rankings don't mean a thing once you get on the court."

Marquis -- whose older brother Jeff was selected with the No. 19 pick by Atlanta in the first round of the NBA draft last month -- is closing in on his college decision. His father said it's likely to happen next month, after the end of the coaches' evaluation period and before the beginning of school.
The Teagues had planned to announce a decision in June, but Shawn said he wanted to make sure the family could sit down and discuss it.

"That's where we are right now," Shawn Teague said. "I know it's been pushed back a couple times, but I felt like it needed to be. Committing early was something that was tough for me, especially knowing the coaches could be somewhere else by the time he would get there."

Kentucky, with new coach John Calipari, has entered the mix for Teague, along with Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State, Purdue and Wake Forest.
"Kentucky has definitely offered," Shawn Teague said.

Marquis played this week at the King City Classic in Cleveland, which followed the LeBron James Skills Academy. He will rejoin his Spiece Indy Heat team this weekend.

"I think Marquis is about ready to make a decision," Shawn Teague said. "Honestly, there aren't a lot of negatives with this group of schools."

Teague decision likely after school starts

Shawn Teague, father of Pike standout junior-to-be Marquis Teague, said it?s likely that his son?s college decision won?t come before school starts on Tuesday.

The 6-2 Teague is playing at the adidas Nations in Dallas through Sunday, capping a full summer for the point guard, who is ranked as the No. 2 player nationally in the 2011 class by rivals.com.

Teague is weighing offers from Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, Purdue and Wake Forest.

?With the schedule he?s had, we really haven?t had a chance to stop and see what direction he?s going to go,? Shawn Teague said. ?I think he?s in a good position. We definitely want to make sure it?s a decision he?s comfortable with. We?ve just been so tied up week to week that it?s been difficult.?

The elder Teague said the decision will probably be ?flexed out? a bit into the school year.

?We?re going to let him sit back and rest a bit, collect our thoughts and see what he wants,? Teague said.

There?s no truth the rumors that Marquis will be running fly patterns for Pike?s football team this fall. He did express an interest to his mom and dad, though.

?That kind of threw us for a loop,? Shawn Teague said with a laugh. ?He spoke to us about it and he liked playing in years past, but he hasn?t mentioned it again so we kind of let it go.?

2011 PG Marquis Teague, 6-1, 165 pounds
(Indianapolis, IN/Pike)

Quick, explosive and fearless are all good adjectives when describing one of the top point guards in the 2011 class. Teague was a difference maker in the majority of games at the adidas Nations event. He has a tendency to play a little too aggressive and fast with the basketball at times, but this kid can get the ball into the lane at will against anybody. In transition, with a full head of steam, he is impossible to handle. The best a defender can do is retreat and concede the open 15-foot jumper. He has an attacking mentality and looks to push the ball at every opportunity, while putting a lot of pressure on the defense. He showed a nice feel for drawing the defense and kicking to an open shooter. He is a scoring machine that is more of a penetrator than a shooter, but showed he can make a three off the dribble using a ball screen or off the catch when the defense was out of position. He gave great effort pressuring the ball on the defensive end of the floor. With his superior feet and quickness, he is able to get up under the ballhandler and be very disruptive.

Dress like you?re one of the best high school players in the WORLD

Thankfully, Marquis Teague doesn?t care about any of that. Yes, his big brother, Jeff, finished last season as Wake Forest?s leading scorer. Yeah, he was also the Atlanta Hawks? first-round draft selection. But no, none of that bothers the younger Teague, a 6-1 rising junior from Indianapolis who had a sparking showing at adidas Nations last week in Dallas. The spunky guard got to the hole, pulled up for short floaters and dished the ball with Jeff Teague-like ease. No. 2 on Rivals.com?s list of 2011 prospects, few basketball authorities worry about Marquis getting lost in Jeff?s shadow. And after SLAM?s one-on-one with the poised teen down in Texas, we aren?t much worried about discovering the next Gerald Wilkins either.

SLAM: When you see your brother play, what are you trying to take from his game?
MT: I respect him as a player. That?s my brother. I watch him all the time. He tries to help me get my shot better. I gotta get it off quick in college. Guys in college are long. In the League, they?re long. He?s just showing me all the moves he uses to get his shots off.
SLAM: I?m guessing there are countless games you all have played against each other. Give me a guess of how many times you won one-on-one.
MT: Really, I only beat him one time.

SLAM: Really?
MT: Yeah, he beat me every time. He don?t wanna give me nuthin?. He?ll foul me. He?ll push me. He doesn?t wanna give me nuthin?.

SLAM: You made a college decision yet?
MT: I got a top five: Louisville, Ohio State, IU, Wake Forest and Kentucky.

Lovers' triangle: Pitino, Calipari and Crean

Apparently when John Calipari rode into Lexington and in a matter of weeks secured commitments from maybe the nation's two best 2010 point guards, John Wall and Eric Bledsoe, it got the attention of the other mega-coach in the state.

Marquis Teague of Indianapolis, maybe the best point guard in the 2011 class, said last month that the five schools he is considering signing with next year are Louisville, Ohio State, Indiana, Wake Forest and Kentucky.

Recruiting observers had considered Teague a lock for Louisville for a long time. Teague's father, Shawn, played for Louisville coach Rick Pitino when Pitino coached at Boston University.

But then Tom Crean got up and running at Indiana last year and began playing to Teague's in-state loyalties. And then Calipari was hired by Kentucky last spring and immediately assembled a team some think could win the NCAA championship this year. And then Calipari persuaded the Teagues to pay Kentucky a visit last month.

The lean toward Louisville has become, in the view of those recruiting observers, a three-team race among Kentucky, Indiana and Louisville.

So now Pitino -- despite other pressing concerns -- has made his latest play, hiring an assistant coach from Teague's high school to be his special assistant.

Nothing illegal about it, according to NCAA rules. Pitino's not the first to do it, either. It just smells, that's all. Like a lot of what goes on in college basketball.

Do not underestimate Calipari's powers of persuasion, however. A year ago, hoping to position itself to get Wall, Baylor hired the brother of Wall's AAU coach as its director of player development. Calipari got Wall anyway.

Teague downplays Louisville hire, adds UNC to list
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: September 4, 2009

Difficult as it might be not to, prize high school basketball recruit Marquis Teague said not to read too much Louisville?s hiring of his former high school assistant, Shabaka Lands, as influencing his college decision.

Teague, a lightning-quick junior point guard at Pike High School, said Friday that ?it won?t affect where I?m going to go.?

?That?s for him,? said Teague, ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 2 player nationally in the 2011 class. ?That doesn?t have anything to do with me. I still need to find the place where I?m most comfortable.?

So where, exactly, is Teague most comfortable? He doesn?t know. Not yet, anyway. Teague?s friend and teammate, senior Khristian Smith, said he can?t get a read on it either.

?I want to be the first one to know, but I don?t know what he?s going to do,? Smith said. ?I don?t think he knows.?

Teague said he?d like to have a decision made before the first game of the season at Pike, but he and his father, Shawn Teague, have pushed the deadline back a few times already. Teague said he?s still considering offers from Cincinnati, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio State Purdue and Wake Forest (though he added contact with Wake Forest has been waning recently).

It appears another school has been added to the list, though, as defending national champion North Carolina has begun recruiting Teague. He said he hopes to visit the Chapel Hill, N.C. campus ?at some time? this fall.

?I?ve been talking to them a lot lately and they are starting to get in the mix,? said Teague, whose brother Jeff played at Wake Forest and will be a rookie with the Atlanta Hawks this season. ?It makes it harder. I mean, it?s North Carolina. You have to talk to them.?

Teague has visits lined up this weekend to Louisville and Cincinnati on Sept. 26. He said he also plans to make trips to IU and Ohio State again. The past two weekends he?s been to Kentucky and Purdue and said he would like to also visit Kentucky once more.

Teague talks about schools
Posted by Kyle Neddenriep

Pike junior standout Marquis Teague's list of schools is getting longer instead of shorter. Teague said Friday that he's now considering North Carolina, and though he hasn't yet received an offer from the Tar Heels, he's hoping to visit the Chapel Hill campus this fall. The 6-1 guard is also still considering Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State and Purdue. He said Wake Forest is still on the list, but he hasn't had much contact with them recently.

Here's what he said about each of the schools he's considering:

Ohio State: "(Coach Thad Matta) doesn't really play that much of a fast pace, but he wants to change that and get up and down. He always has dominant teams. With Jared (Sullinger) and Deshaun (Thomas) coming in, he wants me to come in and run the point. He said he wants to change the whole style. He's a great coach and let Mike Conley make a lot of great decisions when he was there and lead the team. He'll tell the point guard to go out and lead the team. I hang out with Deshaun a lot and spend time at his house when I'm in Fort Wayne. Jared's really been trying to get me to come to Ohio State."

I'm not sure if LVL was after any of our 2010 class - maybe Sibert a little, but so far with the 2011 class matchups its ALL LVL. Particularly troubling is losing both Price and Chandler to the same school. I hope TM can start winning some of these battles soon!
