One of those guys who continually shows improvement. Multi-tooled big man can block shots, scores in post. Has a body that will explode in college. High-major player.

It'll be a battle for the DeMatha big.

Mikael Hopkins, the 6-9 PF/C from DeMatha in Hyattsville, MD, has been one Maryland's top targets in the 2011 class since the cycle started. He took the next step in his recruitment tonight, narrowing his list down to 10. Maryland, fortunately, made the cut.

No, that's not a very narrow list, especially when compared to Dorian Finney-Smith's 6. But it's progress.

Unfortunately, the list doesn't exactly look great for Maryland fans. It's a who-who of big-name schools. Via Scout, the list includes Georgetown, Kansas, Miami, Ohio State, Pitt, Syracuse, Texas, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia. Miami and VT are the only schools Maryland could have any confidence against in a recruiting dogfight, and even that is very questionable.

Hopkins has repeated several times that he wants to get away for school, but that hasn't stopped Maryland from recruiting him, even showing up in full force for his AAU games. That list is imposing for any school, though, let alone Maryland.

Mikael Hopkins Adds Rutgers to List
By Adam Zagoria on August 23, 2010

Mikael Hopkins, the No. 12 power forward in the Class of 2011 out of DeMatha (Md.), has added Rutgers to his list of possible schools.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound Hopkins took an unofficial visit to Rutgers Sunday along with his mother, Miko, and Team Takeover coach Keith Stevens.

?He went down there so he?s got to be definitely considering them,? Stevens said by phone.

Stevens declined to go into detail about the visit because he said he doesn?t generally provide information on specific visits.

However, he said Hopkins has added Rutgers and subtracted Syracuse from his list of schools. That list now includes Georgetown, Kansas, Miami, Ohio State, Pittsburgh, Texas, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Maryland and Rutgers.

Hopkins has no officials scheduled but Stevens said he would definitely ?sign early.?

As for what type of player he will be, Stevens said: ?He?ll be a face-up skilled four man that can do a lot of different things, face the basket, rebound, block shots. He?ll be good. He?s gotta get stronger.?

if he gets away from Gary Williams, I will be very surprised.

He and Lewis both are said to be leaning to Gary. But I have a feeling they won't both want to go to the same school.

So we could be in position to get whichever doesn't sign with MD. We need a C so bad I'd take one of them in a heartbeat!

Mikael Hopkins, the No. 12 power forward in the Class of 2011 out of DeMatha (Md.), will visit Ohio State this coming weekend and Kansas Sept. 24.

?He is at Ohio State this weekend on an official,? Team Takeover coach Keith Stevens said Tuesday by phone.

Stevens politely declined to say what other officials Hopkins would take.

?We kind of know where he?s gonna go,? he said. ?He hasn?t told everybody. He?s going to Kansas on Sept. 24. The rest is up in the air.?

Stevens did say the 6-foot-8, 210-pound Hopkins has a number of in-home visits scheduled with Georgetown, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, Miami, Maryland, N.C. State, Kansas and Texas. Rutgers is no longer in the mix.

Stevens expects Hopkins to decide in the early signing period.

Class of 2011 PF Mikael Hopkins (Hyattsville, MD/DeMatha video, pics) was scheduled to make his way to Kansas on Friday to officially visit the University of Kansas. However, according to his Team Takeover D.C. coach Keith Stevens, the visit will not take place this weekend.

?It was rescheduled for next weekend,? Stevens said via text.

Hopkins is currently considering seven schools and is planning to announce his decision on November 1st. Ohio State, Georgetown, Virginia Tech, Miami, Texas, West Virginia and Kansas make up the seven schools that Stevens mentioned to TheShiver.com (link) shortly after the Kansas coaching staff conducted their in-home visit with Hopkins.

would we take 3 PF in this class? even with ross's academic issues (which hopefully is nothing)

2 wings (Ross and Thompson)
1 PG (Scott)
2 Big Men (Hopefully Amir Williams and Hopkins)

That would be 5 top 100 players and another top 5 recruiting class by Matta.

Next Friday is October 1st! Still a month to go there!
Thanks. I must be excited in getting the basketball season here:)
even with ross's academic issues
as Wade pointed out in the main basketball recruiting thread Ross's academic issues only boil down to the fact that he has not taken any of his test yet and that is why he has not taken his official as of yet. I am with starBUCKS in his breakdown of the class if we could get both of those two PFs.
