Evaluation

May, 2010: Gathers is a 'man-child' that is capable of dominating games with his tremendous strength. He runs the floor and finishes through contact that he welcomes. Drop off passes, drop steps and short one dribble power drives make Gathers unstoppable one on one. He clears out when he rebounds defensively and on the offensive glass he almost impossible to be boxed out by one player. Gathers moves the offensive player out of the lane like a rag doll. He must work to develop his skills in order to advance his game but this super power forward can take over the paint at will.

?Rico? was probably the biggest man-child the event had to offer. Looking like he?d be a top 10 defensive end in the country, he mixed in his power with a surprising skill set and handle for a big guy. Gathers is an animal on the glass and caught a few unsuspecting defenders slipping and put them on posters. While he?s still stuck in between positions a bit at this point, Gathers is definitely one of the better players in the Class of 2012.

New Orleans D-1 Ambassadors and Riverside Academy (Reserve) rising junior Ricardo Gathers is often associated with the term "manchild," but there is nothing childish about the 6-7, 240-pound forward.

Gathers posted 17 points despite rolling an ankle in a 79-50 win over Poly Nation, attracting a good deal of attention from the horde of college coaches in attendance.

A possible top 10 prospect in the 2012 class, Gathers has more offers than he can count and, like Shaw, will be narrowing things down soon.

"Right now I'm pretty open," Gathers said. "I'm taking a look at all the schools coming after me, trying to get to know the coaches. I'll definitely narrow it down by the end of the summer."

Expect Ohio State to be in the mix as that was the only school Gathers mentioned when asked which offer stood out the most.

2012 big man Ricardo Gathers rattled off a rather long list that included LSU, California, USC, UCLA, Alabama, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Ohio State, Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M, Penn State, Iowa and Georgetown. He says he'll be cutting things down after the summer and that LSU, California, Ohio State and Texas are four who should make the cut down to around 10 schools.

looks like a young smaller dwight howard
nonetheless i have a hard time seeing him become a buckeye if LSU wants him pretty bad and makes him their #1 target
although we did pull shannon scott from GA so i guess anything can happen
While I am doubtful also, Post #2 of this thread might help:) He certainly would know the terrain of New Orleans.

I added the "Bayou Bull" tag after reading this blurb:

Gathers back at it

Ricardo Gathers couldn't lead his D-1 Ambassadors of New Orleans past the Playaz in the quarterfinals, but there wasn't much he didn't do in trying.

He gave the Playaz such fits it prompted one fan of the New Jersey team to scream loud enough for everybody in the gym to hear, "Somebody please get in front of him."

Hop out of the crowd and try it yourself, buddy.

The 6-7, 240-pound "Bayou Bull" is a matchup nightmare at this level, even looking very comfortable in stepping out and knocking down a 3-pointer Sunday. He might be most effective when facing up at the elbow and charging, a move he finished on one occasion with a nasty tomahawk.

Around this time next season, Ricardo Gathers will be one of the hot names. Gathers (LaPlace, La./Riverside) is a junior and a year away from having his college decision dissected by pundits and fans.

During the fall, head coach from Louisiana State and California watched him during the non-contact period for underclassmen.

Texas and Arizona are also chasing him. California is on the list because the Louisiana native has relatives out West. Gathers is ranked No. 26 in the ESPNU Class of 2012 rankings.

Ricardo Gathers, one of nation's top players, tries to lead Riverside to another title

Ricardo Gathers gathered himself for bed until his cell phone be gan to vibrate. It was 12:01 during a morning last June, and Gathers was confused. His emerging talents were in demand.

"Who is this?" he thought before answering.

Baylor coaches were on the line, prepared to make their pitch. They sounded enthusiastic despite the late hour, with hopes that Gathers, Riverside's 6-foot-7, 235-pound junior center, would consider their school when his time came to make a college choice. Gathers had learned the price of his promise.

"It's definitely a tough task," he said. "If you're young, you can either handle it or you can't. I think I've been doing a pretty good job of handling it so far. I just want to keep coming. Where much is given, much is required. The maturity is coming into place."

Gathers returns as one of the nation's top prospects, and he hopes to guide Riverside to a second consecutive Class 2A state championship. He anticipates using this season to evolve his skills as well as showcase his leadership ability.

Gathers' first season at Riverside was memorable. Gathers, who transferred to Riverside when Reserve Christian closed after the 2008-09 school year, averaged 19.9 points and 15 rebounds per game, and the Louisiana Sports Writers Association chose him Class 2A's Outstanding Player. The Rebels went 38-6, and they never won by fewer than 20 points in the Class 2A playoffs. Riverside won its first basketball state title last March at Lafayette.

Gathers' competitive fire flickered in eighth grade. He remembers the power he felt when he started dunking the basketball. Before then, he considered himself an underdeveloped talent at Fifth Ward Elementary in Reserve. "I had always been the underdog," he said. He knew he was strong for his age, and he thought that with grit and effort he could become a force. A dream began to form.

Since, Gathers has grown into a physical player. When he stretches his left arm perpendicular to his shoulder, his chiseled biceps rivals one of a trained boxer. Riverside Coach Timmy Byrd said he holds his breath each time Gathers makes a strong move to the basket, because opponents try "to take him out." Gathers' style of play makes him vulnerable to hard fouls.

"He's a kid in a man's body," Byrd said. "Sometimes we expect more from him than probably we have a right to, but God has given him a lot of gifts and a lot of abilities.

"He's a jolly-go-lucky guy and likes to have a good time. He likes to keep it light. But when it comes time to playing in a game, he has a real good motor, and he wants to win."

Said Evan Daniels, national recruiting analyst for Scout.com: "I think the first thing you notice about Ricardo Gathers is his body, and how strong and developed he is.

"He has developed an ability to face up from 15 to 18 feet and knock down jump shots. He has a good set of hands. He is really strong around the basket."

Gathers' maturity is another strength. In the offseason, he awoke at 5 a.m. before school to lift weights at a gym located a block from his LaPlace residence. He likes to study players such as Amar'e Stoudemire and LeBron James, but he said he is careful not to pattern his game too much after another because he considers each skill set to be unique.

This season presents new challenges. Riverside will be without guard Cedric Jenkins, who averaged 19.7 points per game as a senior and signed with Southern Mississippi last April. Gathers calls the situation before him a "new task, new day" as opponents will discover if he can lead the Rebels with his calm personality.

Gathers said supporters have approached him and said, "Hey, man. You have to show them."

"He's always going to be the center of attention, and he's always going to have the target on his back as the person you are going to have to stop," Hahnville Coach Brian Lumar said. "He does a good job of not getting frustrated, and he maintains his focus."

Gathers has a renewed focus for this season. He wants to look back on this time in his life as a moment when he and his teammates left legacies for future players to follow. His name has gained recognition nationally, and he said he is prepared for the responsibilities that await a rising star.

Even if that means fielding late-night recruiting calls.

"I'm trying to accomplish something," Gathers said. "This is what I have been preparing for my whole life."?

Riverside's Ricardo Gathers received the first of what will probably be many postseason awards Thursday when he was selected the Louisiana Gatorade Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

Gathers, a 6-foot-8 junior post player, led the Rebels to their second consecutive Class 2A state championship last week when Riverside downed Evangel 82-61 at the Top 28 Tournament in Lafayette. Gathers, who scored 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting and pulled down 10 rebounds ? including six offensive ? was chosen the Top 28 Class 2A Most Valuable Player and made the Top 28 All-Tournament team. He also scored 17 points in the Rebels' 76-43 2A semifinals victory against Episcopal-Baton Rouge at the Top 28.

Riverside finished 33-6 this season. Gathers averaged 20.7 points, 16.2 rebounds, 3.9 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals during the 2010-11 season. He was selected Class 2A All-State Player of the Year in 2010.

"It's definitely a big one,'' Gathers said of the Gatorade award. "Any time you get a Player of the Year award for the state, it really means something.''

Gathers, who likely will be the state's top boys basketball recruit next fall, said he hasn't yet begun narrowing college choices. He identified several he's considering, including LSU, St. John's, Baylor, Texas, California, USC, UCLA, Oregon and North Carolina.

He said he'll attend several summer basketball camps, including the NBA Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va., and the LeBron James Camp in Akron, Ohio.

"I think I need to work on my versatility this summer,'' Gathers said. "It's going to be a busy summer.

"And we're (Riverside) really looking forward to next year. We'll be playing a lot of games throughout the nation. Our schedule is going to be very intense next year. I feel like we have a chance to make something happen, be something special.''

Ricardo Gathers Getting Lots of Love
By Adam Zagoria on April 16, 2011

Ricardo Gathers is getting a lot of love these days.

The 6-foot-8 junior post player from Reserve (La.) Riverside says the top of his college lists features St. John?s, UConn, Syracuse, Kansas, Texas and Florida.

The Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year, Gathers averaged 20.7 points, 16.2 rebounds, 3.9 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals during the 2010-11 season.

He led Riverside to a 33-6 record this season and its second consecutive Class 2A state championship. He was selected the Louisiana Class 2A All-State Player of the Year in 2010. He is ranked the No. 10 power forward in the Class of 2012.

?I?ll definitely be a rebounder, I?ll be able to get to the glass and finish on anybody,? Gathers said of the skill-set he will take to college.

As far as the schools currently on his list, he broke them down one-by-one.
