Gathers Considering St. John?s for 2011
By Adam Zagoria on June 16, 2011

Ricardo Gathers, a 6-foot-8 forward from Reserve (La.) Riverside, says he and his family have talked to St. John?s about enrolling in 2011 instead of his original class of 2012.

?We kind of brought it up,? Gathers said Thursday by phone from the NBA Top 100 Camp in Virginia. ?It would be a great situation for me to improve my game. I don?t see myself getting better in high school so it?s just something I want to do.?

St. John?s has nine new players committed for 2011 and Gathers would be the 10th. They have only one returning player in guard Malik Stith after freshman wing Dwyane Polee II transferred to San Diego State.

Still, Gathers said he would likely remain in the Class of 2012.

?Most likely 2012,? he said.

Gathers said he is considering St. John?s, Texas, Arizona and LSU, with St. John?s and Texas leading the way.

Ricardo Gathers to St. John?s
By Adam Zagoria on July 30, 2011

Having reeled in a monster recruiting class for 2011, St. John?s coach Steve Lavin is now stockpiling big talent for 2012.

Ricardo Gathers, a 6-foot-7, 240-pound power forward from Laplace (La.) Riverside ranked No. 12 at his position by Rivals, has verbally committed to the Johnnies over LSU, Texas, Syracuse and Arizona.

?I picked St. John?s because of the coaching staff and I liked the way Coach Lavin communicated with me throughout the process,? Gathers told ESPN?s Paul Biancardi, who broke the news. ?A year ago he was recruiting me and I didn?t think much of it, until I saw how they played on television and how much success they were having.

?I can?t wait to play in New York. Watching the movie ?He Got Game? got me really excited about playing there.?

The Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year, Gathers averaged 20.7 points, 16.2 rebounds, 3.9 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals during the 2010-11 season.

If it was between St. John's and Texas, I like who won. I don't think Rick Barnes does things by the book down there - I think it is suspicious how practically all of the biggest stars from Findlay Prep in Nevada have all gone to Texas. Lavin has always been a good recruiter, dating back to his UCLA days.

I guess you are correct about Lavin. his problem at UCLA was that he could not coach but now that he has big Gene to help him maybe he would improve at his coaching.

Gathers Decommits from St. John?s
By Adam Zagoria on November 08, 2011

Ricardo Gathers has decommitted from St. John?s and will not sign until the spring.

The decommitment was first reported by WGNO TV in New Orleans and confirmed in a statement by Gathers obtained by SNY.tv.

?I would like to announce that although I had previously selected St. John?s University as the college I would attend through a verbal commitment, I have since decided to withdraw that commitment,? he said.

?I have recently realized that because the decision I make in choosing a university is one that will greatly impact my future, I must be 100 percent sure of the choice I make. I plan to devote time to analyzing all prospective scenarios and seriously considering how my decision will affect not only my basketball dreams and my education, but also considering how my decision will affect my family and those around me. I will be including St. John?s in my options and have by no means ruled that choice out. I would like to spend my last year of high school focused on team goals and then making a decision about college in the spring.?

The 6-foot-7, 240-pound power forward will not sign until the spring, his coach, Timmy Byrd, told SNY.tv.
