'12 PA RB Rushel Shell (Pitt Signee; Transfer to West Virginia)

Agreed. Get the big boys in here to open up the holes and let the talent sort itself out. Shell is just too talented to pass on. Plenty of teams utilize 3 backs (Wisconsin comes to mind) and I think all of Ball, Shell and Dunn would bring a different element to the table...not to mention, that would easily be the best RB class in the country. Even if we have a transfer eventually, its well worth it imo.

I think so too. I wonder if any 3 of the backs would be up for a grey shirt...

Zero chance. Kids with their kind of offers don't grey shirt...that is why we've only seen one or two of those at OSU...rarely is an OSU-caliber kid willing to take that option when he can go straight in to another school and play/practice immediately. A grey shirt is for a kid like Boeckman who had offers from MAC schools and chose rather to go to the school of his dream but have to delay enrollment delay enrollment. It also has to be a situation that makes sense for OSU. The option to grey shirt Boeckman was more attractive to OSU because of how the '04 class at QB looked in-state (OSU went after Xavier Reed, Anthony Morelli, and Bobby Reid and ended up with Joe Bauserman). 2013 has some great in-state RBs already.

Wonder if they can sell Shell on being the 1-2 punch with Dunn, with Warren Ball being a swiss army knife guy, who can be your third down back, or move out of the backfield and line up in the slot.. If I'm not mistaken, Ball has very good hands and has had success catching the football out of the backfield. Just a thought.

Great idea but while that makes sense to us fans but what is hard to do is sell a kid like Warren Ball, with offers from everyone in the Big 10 and beyond, on the idea of coming to OSU to be a third-down/utility back...or selling a guy like Shell or Dunn on the idea of coming to OSU to be a part of a platoon. It can be done but it is a really tough sell. Kids with their kinds of offers typically want to go somewhere where they are going to be the man.

which is completely understandable from the high school athletes perspective

at the same time, the lifespan of an NFL running back appears to be getting shorter and shorter (at least from my limited perspective), and it makes sense for someone to want to preserve their legs and bodies while in college

someone who has 175+ carries for three or four years in college is almost a liability in the NFL at this point due to injury concerns

look at Beanie Wells compared to Peyton Hillis, for example; one was a work horse in college and is struggling to stay healthy, the other was rarely used in college and appears to have fresh legs... something that NFL GMs have to notice

you can see it in Terrelle Pryor as well, who is WAY less willing to take a hit in year three than he was as a freshman

a college football season wears on you, three or more years of it and you are pretty darn lucky to be healthy heading in to the combine

like I said, it is completely understandable for a high school athlete to want to be "the man" in college, but if they have long term NFL aspirations, it is a fine line between being "the man" and racking up first round stats and being too injured to be in the NFL for more than a few years, much less to have a productive career

Football Player of the Year: Rushel Shell
Hopewell's super Shell runs on a different level

By Mike White, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Matt Freed/Post-Gazette
Hopewell's Rushel Shell has 6,766 rushing yards, second-besrt in WPIAL history, on 796 attempts.

Before every game, Hopewell's Rushel Shell likes to watch a short episode of "Dragon Ball Z" on his cell phone.

It is a cartoon series where characters defend the earth against an assortment of villains while searching for mystical objects known as Dragon Balls.

When game time comes around, it's like Shell breaks into his own old-school cartoon character. Beep, beep. There goes Shell.

Shell is the WPIAL's version of the Road Runner. He treats WPIAL defenses like Wile E. Coyote.

Many try to catch Shell, but few succeed. Shell, a junior at Hopewell, had a terrific junior season, one of the best of any running back in WPIAL history. For his efforts, he has been chosen as the Post-Gazette Player of the Year. This is the 17th year of the award, which takes into account all players in the WPIAL and City League.

Shell had a few other strong challengers for player of the year, and he thought it might go to Clairton's Desimon Green or South Fayette's Christian Brumbaugh. But in Western Pennsylvania, Shell is on a different level.

"Right now, I have him as the No. 5 player in the country for next year's class," said Tom Lemming, a renowned national talent scout for CSTV. "I've seen his films, and he has size, vision, balance, speed and the most important thing he does is produce."

In fact, he has produced like no other WPIAL running back has in his first three years of high school. Shell already has 6,766 yards, second-best in WPIAL history, on 796 attempts. No other WPIAL runner had this many yards after his junior year.

The WPIAL record for career rushing yardage is 7,646 yards, held by 2000 Fort Cherry graduate Mike Vernillo. Barring injury, Shell has an excellent chance at the record, needing only 880 yards next season. He also has a shot at the state record, needing 2,261 yards to catch Steelton-Highspire's Jeremiah Young.

If Shell has another season like this year, he will break the state record. Consider:

? Shell rushed 323 times for 2,510 yards (7.8 average) and scored 32 touchdowns this season. He averaged 228 yards rushing a game.

? In the history of the WPIAL, only four running backs have gained more than 2,000 yards in the regular season. Shell has done it twice, including 2,102 this regular season.

? Shell had three 300-yard games this season, and two of them were against Montour and Central Valley, who met in the WPIAL Class AAA championship game.

? Shell also had three 200-yard games.
"Right now, my top five would probably be Ohio State, Penn State, Florida, Alabama and Oregon," Shell said.

Not all that long ago Shell listed Pitt among his favorites and not Penn State.

He said he now has Penn State on his list of top schools mainly because of the relationship he has developed with Penn State assistant Tom Bradley.

The coaching change at Pitt has affected Shell's thinking some, but he added: "They're still one of my schools just because it's at home. I still have to figure out some things and talk to the new coach there. I'll see what my relationship is with him."

Have to think that is a top four if the rumblings in Happy Valley are true.

No idea what are chances are with the other two backs in the fold, and it is very early, but it doesn't hurt to be potentially the only viable, local choice.

I've spoken with Rushel on multiple occasions, if all things were held equal it'd be a no brainer choice of OSU for him. All things aren't equal, but even with 2 backs in the fold already it's going to take a surge from someone (most likely PSU) to surpass the Bucks.

I still think one of are young backs will transfer after next season, that could help our chances with the depth chart point of view. Also, I remember reading that Ball, or Dunn could possibly move to LB? We'll see. I know this kid loves Terrelle Pryor, maybe he could recruit him.
