'12 PA RB Rushel Shell (Pitt Signee; Transfer to West Virginia)

Wow. I know it's just HSFB and the quality of competition varies wildly, but any running back who finishes a game with a line like 6 ATT 88 YARDS 14.7 YPA 3 TD is something special.

Reminds me a lot of Clarett's old high school stat lines, at least as the long run/carry ratio goes.

Shell also looks up to Terrelle Pryor, the Ohio State sophomore who is one of the most recent star quarterbacks to come out of Western Pennsylvania.

With that said, it comes as no surprise that Shell's favorite school currently is Ohio State because "I just like the way they play football."

Shell said he only spoke to Pryor once but is sure he'll be back in touch when the recruiting heats up.

And you can be sure that he already has recruiters around the country watching his film and wondering how "No. 1" does the things he does.

Hopewell defeats Mars, 47-22

The person who made the Planets pay most was sophomore running back Rushel Shell, who ran for 171 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries. Shell gained all those yards despite just one fourth-quarter carry.

"He's a great back; we knew that coming in," Heinauer said. "But I just felt like when we got behind early like that, it made it a lot easier for them to give it to him and for him to make yards. When they build a lead like that, you can forget it."

In leaping out to the 20-0 first-quarter lead, Shell scored on an 8-yard run, Mark Ross pulled in a 17-yard touchdown pass and quarterback Matt Hundenski scored on a 4-yard keeper.

Just out of halftime came the brightest of flashes, with Shell showing why he's considered by some to be one of the most dynamic sophomores in the country.

He took a pitch to the right from his own 33, darted to the right, was hung up against the sideline, made a quick move before heading briefly back into the middle and then back again to the sideline.

Shell looked to be trapped for a loss.

It was a mirage.

The back tiptoed the sideline, made two more Mars defenders miss around midfield and was gone for a 67-yard touchdown to make it 33-7.

"Just how we drew it up, just what we coached him to do," Hopewell coach Dave Vestal said with a laugh, tongue planted firmly in cheek.

"In all honestly, you can't teach that, you can't coach what he did there. He made a couple guys miss and everyone saw what he can do. That was a tremendous run and something he's been blessed with."

Granted there are some bigger schools he could play against and some better but this is Western PA High School football. I assure you it might not be against Ohio elite HS football teams like Glenville, St.X, etc but the kid is the real deal playing against some solid High School teams.

Shell, Hopewell edge way past New Castle
By Chris Harlan, FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Saturday, September 26, 2009

Rushel Shell's butterflies lasted exactly one play.

Hopewell's sophomore star rushed for 147 yards and scored three touchdowns ? including an 89-yard kickoff return on the game's first play ? to lead Hopewell to a fast-paced victory over New Castle, 35-27, on Friday night in a meeting of undefeated teams at Tony Dorsett Stadium.

Shell felt the game's importance in his stomach, churning and aching before kickoff, a feeling the running back said he hadn't felt since last year's playoffs.

"This was a big game that I knew we had to win," said Shell, who had touchdown runs of 56 and 37 yards. "There was a lot of pressure."

Watching Shell run free, though, had to have given New Castle a stomach ache.

Shell's 37-yard touchdown run with 5:24 left in the fourth quarter was the game-winner for No. 3-ranked Hopewell over No. 2-ranked New Castle in a key Parkway Conference game that could play a significant role in playoff seeding. Shell's run extended Hopewell's lead to 35-21.

Hopewell (4-0, 2-0) remains atop the conference standings, now a game ahead of New Castle (3-1, 1-1).

I don't think it's inconceivable for Shell to win national player of the year as a sophmore...

You know, I thought you were saying that because what he's doing is unbelievable for a Sophomore...but after looking at the stats, you might just be right.

Do you think he's the best player in PA, regardless of class?

In terms of the impact he can make, it appears so. Koyack is going to be highly rated and he is a great player, but Shell just plays a position that will get him more notice. As far as the current class, I would put him right up there with Floyd and Brown, but I'm not so sure he is a cut above yet. Either way, he will a top ten player in the country his senior year.
