Power forward
Dayton, Ohio
Dunbar
AAU: All-Ohio Red

Ht:6'6"
Wt:190 lbs
Class:2012 (High School)

Evaluation

January, 2010: Deontae is a thin combo forward that is improving by leaps and bounds. He is very, very long and is skilled enough to play the 3 one day down the road. Right now he is more of a skilled power forward. He is a solid athlete and has a tremendous upside. He has started to realize some of that potential this season. He can step out and shoot effectively to 17 feet. He is continueing to develop his handle though it still needs work. He is a decent rebounder but needs to greatly improve his strength. He can be muscled out of the paint right now. He is a nice talent that will continue to develop and improve.

Ohio High School Hoops: Hawkins Moving Up the Charts

UD recruiting Dunbar junior; OSU moving in
By Doug Harris, Staff Writer
Friday, September 24, 2010

The University of Dayton has signed a top local player in four of the last five basketball recruiting classes, and the program hopes to build on that tradition by landing Dunbar High School junior Deontae ?Teddy? Hawkins.

But reeling in the 6-foot-6 forward won?t be easy.

Ohio State called Thursday to invite Hawkins to make an unofficial visit this weekend, and he happily accepted. Attending the Buckeyes? football game today is part of the itinerary.

?I?ve been waiting forever for that call. ... Ohio State is my dream school,? he said.

Ranked 141st on the Rivals.com top-150 prospects in the 2012 class, Hawkins hasn?t been promised a scholarship by OSU, but UD and Cincinnati have made offers.

It's all about making shots says Hawkins

Basketball can be a simple game. Make a shot, look good; miss the same shot a few times and college guys yawn. Deontae Hawkins (Dayton, Ohio/Dunbar), over the last few days has been on fire. It began in Myrtle Beach, S.C., at Big Shots and has continued at the Peach Jam. The 6-foot-6 small forward wasn't even starting for All-Ohio Red until five games ago, now they can't afford to take him out of the game.

"My shot is falling," Hawkins said. "I'm being more aggressive."

After another game of sinking shots, Hawkins was quite happy to talk about his newfound success. Like a gambler on a roll, he just wants to keep playing and in his case, launching shots.

Dayton, Cincinnati, Ball State, Akron, Georgia, Tennessee and DePaul like him. At this rate, he could shoot himself into offers from each. Just for kicks, I asked him what the dream scenario would be and he indicated that being recruiting by Kentucky would be pretty cool.

Hawkins? Recruitment Picks Up After Peach Jam
Teddy+Hawkins.bmp

The Nike Peach Jam is one of the best AAU tournaments of the season in terms of both competition and exposure. For Dayton Dunbar?s Deontae ?Teddy? Hawkins, a 6?7 power forward from Dayton, the Peach Jam was a coming out party of sorts, as his standout performance garnered him not only new interest, but actual offers from several high major programs. To date, according to Hawkins, he has received offers from a host of programs including: Georgia, Tennessee, Cincinnati, Alabama, Auburn, Miami (FL), Ball State, Wichita State, Oakland, and Ohio University. As evidence that his play at the Peach Jam did not go unnoticed, many of the above schools offered shortly after the Peach Jam concluded (Dayton, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama). In addition to his offers, Hawkins has received interest from Wake Forrest, Virginia Tech, Florida State and West Virginia.

Hawkins plans official visits to Auburn, Dayton

By Doug Harris | Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Deontae ?Teddy? Hawkins will take an official visit to Auburn next week and then follow that up with an official visit to Dayton on Sept. 15-17. He?s hoping Dunbar teammate Andre Yates and UD commit Jalen Robinson of Columbus Northland will accompany him on the latter.

Hawkins, a 6-foot-7 senior who is projected by the Dayton coaches as a 3-man in their system, said Alabama and Wichita State are in his final four with UD and Auburn but that he has no clear leader.

?I need to take those visits to see if I really like the campus and see if it?s comfortable for me,? he said. ?If it?s somewhere that I can go, work on my game and get better and advance to the next level, that?s what I?m going to do.?

He also said he?s still being recruited by Miami (Fla.), LSU and West Virginia. Of that trio, all but the Mountaineers have offered.

Since Thad missed on pretty much every other 4 or 5 he was looking at early, an offer to Deontae may just end up happening. Never heard of Quakerdale Academy, what is their mascot?
:osu:

Pretty sure it's Eagles

Eagles has been a popular mascot among the prep history of recent Buckeyes (along with Vikings). Aaron Craft was an Eagle. So was Evan Ravenel (and he was an Eagle at BC as well - a double Eagle is even better!).

Can Teddy improve both as a student and basketball player to get an offer from Coach Matta?

I am rooting that Teddy will do all the right things if he truly wants to be a Buckeye and be part of an elite basketball program.

With Keita Bates-Diop committing yesterday, that leaves only four schollies open. Probably means Teddy is not going to get his offer now after all.

Tate probably better jump on board soon or his opportunity may be gone as well.

I think Tate has a spot no matter what. Kid is a top flight baller. Saw him at Myrtle Beach against elite competition and he dominated.
