Game Thread (2004) Game One: Cincinnati - 9/4/04 (W, 1-0)

Bear in mind that Krenzel's first start was in 2001 (Illinois, wasn't it?) and he did just fine... but we all know CK. Zwick is an unknown, and that is worrisome. You made a very good point about Dantonio... he knows (and will use) every trick in the book, and I'm sure he's sitting down there just thinking up some new ones, too.

We're lucky that he doesn't have the players he's used to. Cinci's players are good, don't get me wrong, but I think the differences in skill, speed, and training--though slight--will be enough for our O to keep just a step ahead of the game. And bear in mind that for several of those guys, one step is more than enough.

This won't be a laugher, by any means. I'm expecting a solid game by all involved. Dantonio has always been able (much like Tressel) to get his guys to play beyond their abilities, and I foresee a time of prosperity in UC football... But this IS the BUCKEYE state, and Tress's boys are still the biggest, baddest bunch on the block. We'll be OK :)
Actually, McMullen started the game and Krenzel relieved him...throwing a couple of touchdown passes but sealing the Illinois win by tossing an interception for a touchdown near the end of the game.

I think there's been too much focus on Zwick considering we'll likely run the ball even more than usual until he gets his feet wet. It should be all we need until we get to NC State.

I stand corrected. Thanks. It's an ironic commentary on the past few years that we get nervous about games like Cinci, and NCState, or even Marshall... when our team has gone 25-2 in the past two years. Keeps the games interesting, though :)

Nothing against these teams. I'm just saying that traditionally, we'd have considered these to be locks.

You're not alone on the Krenzel thing... a lot of people forgot about that game. He threw it right to the LB but made no excuses afterward... he said he just didn't see him. As for Cinci, Marshall and NC State, look for a heay dose of Lydell and company and great D to get us over the hump. I wouldn't look for JT to unleash an aerial barrage against those guys. We just have better football players than everyone on our schedule with the possible exception of a few Wolverines (Baas and Jackson).

Question

Hey I have tickets to the game its in the Endzone where the big score board is! I'm in the upper Left corner of the stands are these good seats? anyhow I think the buckeyes come out fired up and take it from the beginning when they rattle Gino with some big hits, I know Dantonio will have his crew ready. The only thing I see that could do tosu in is possibly turnovers and I know its weird to say but maybe the field position with the punting problems we might have. (hope we won't have to punt tho).

Wow...The 'Cats have 17 returning starters ( lots of seniors ) plus returning special teams personnel...Dantanio as H.C. with time to prepare....Hmmm....I wouldn't be sleep walking on 9/4 :!

:osu: Had better be patient and stick to basics! IMO

This is very true, but keep in mind that the Cats are very inexperienced where it counts the most.........up the middle. Although they return 2 all conference players on the ends, they are very very weak up the middle with both defensive tackles making minimal inpact at the collegiate level.

Their pass rush does concern me off the ends, I hope that our offensive line comes ready to play ball.

The only seats that are not good are the ones behing the beams. The South Stands seats are still pretty good, because you can look at the big board to see plays at the other end. You, though, may be too far up to see the board clearly.

The game should be close for a while, but I just think out depth will wear them down in the second half, especially if it's as hot as the Texas Tech game in 2002.

I think (hope) our D will prove to be too strong.

Krenzel had 1 Td pass and 2 Ints, while McMullen had 1 Td passes and 0 Ints that day

Tressel inserted Krenzel late in the 2nd quarter with OSU trailing 14-10; 3 and out, Illinois gets the ball, and scores to make it 21-10 at the half. I to this day do not understand the rationale behind that move.

Krenzel's play in the second half of the game continues to be overstated; OSU was still in the game with 6 minutes left but he got picked off by the kid from Ohio. He and McMullen both were greatly aided by Wells, who rushed for nearly 200 yards that day.

But back to the thread's topic, I don't see OSU scoring a lot of points in the opener because of having so many newbies and I don't see Cincy scoring too many points either because they'll be going against our defense. I see it being close like last time, decided by 3-6 points.

I don't understand this logic? First of all, no one has any clue how the offense will look, to many new personnel, but remember alot of those guys have played so I guess the question will be if they gel.

Danotonio may know us, but we will also know what to expect from his defense, so it comes down to talent and the simple fact it is in the shoe, I say its close for a quarter but OSU opens it up in the second half.

I know cincy has 17 returning starters, but that was from a team that finished 5-7 in conference USA for crying out loud!

Please dont forget this one aspect, and that is that cincy will be going into the game with having to learn all new schemes on offense and defense, I think its a blow out.

Don't underestimate what good coaching can do. Defensively the Bearcats will be solid, I have no doubts about that. They will come in here fired up and ready to roll.

It will be a low scoring game, not that low. If we score only 6 points we will lose.

I don't see this game being all that close. Yes I know Dantonio knows our offensive plays but we also know what he is going to do on defense. So I think that this makes it a battle of talent which we a lot more of. Plus I think that our offense is going to be much improved.

OSU 31
Cin 7
