Game Thread (2004) Game Two: Marshall - 9/11/04 (W, 2-0)

The only hope for Marshall is that the youth of this OSU team rears it's head in a large way and they just come out flat and unprepared to play. Talent wise MU is a slight upgrade over UC but nothing major. MU will need a serious amount of help from OSU to win this game in Columbus.

The rebound factor for MU and the look ahead to NCSU factor for OSU are the only glimmers of hope I could offer a Marshall fan at this point. Talent, depth, home field and coaching all go to OSU.

Bottom line is that I simply can't overstate how bad their OL looked vs Troy last week, it wasn't a lack of effort thing-it was a lack of talent thing.

Ooh! My first prediction. Marshall, single digit divisible by three, scoring only during the second half, hereafter known as the "Freshman Future Hour."
OSU, score indeterminate, but the staff's uniform cleaner has a heck of a time getting grass stains out of the QB's knee.

Of course, you can divide zero by three...

CFN's 'Fearless Prediction"

Marshall (0-1) at Ohio State (1-0), 3:30 pm EST ABC
Why to watch: On the surface this appears to be a no-doubter. Marshall just came off a home loss to Troy only managing 177 yards of total offense, while Ohio State simply doesn't lose at home anymore under Jim Tressel. But this is a dangerous game for the Buckeyes with a showdown with NC State looming and an experienced Marshall team anxious to show that last week was a total fluke. This could be a far better game than expected and if OSU starts turning the ball over an making mistakes, this could be another 2003 Marshall-Kansas State upset.

Why Marshall might win: Despite putting up 462 yards against the Bearcats, Ohio State's offense is still trying to find itself and get some sort of consistency. It got the job done against Cincinnati, but there's still a quarterback controversy and it still took a little while to get everything rolling. The Buckeyes aren't going to throw 50 on the board and Marshall has the offensive firepower to hang around for a while, even if it didn't show it against Troy.

Why Ohio State might win: Off-the-field issues have been a major distraction for the Herd and it will hurt the defense in a big way. The suspension of tackle Jamall Whyce, end Jonathan Goddard and two backups didn't really cost the Herd against Troy, but that meant it took one game of experience away from the line. The Herd had better be ready up front or the Buckeye offensive line will steamroll its way to a win.

Who to watch: Troy didn't get much out of its anemic offense against Marshall, but Ohio State won't have the same problem if the running game works as well as it did against Cincinnati. Lydell Ross ran for 141 yards and a score once again showing he's the star Big Ten running back that no one is talking about. It's hard to get much publicity in Columbus these days with all the focus on the quarterback situation. Justin Zwick looked decent, but Troy Smith showed even more in a limited role. Expect this to be an issue well into the season.

What will happen: Marshall will be better than it was against Troy, but it's not going to matter. Ohio State will sputter, cough, and look generally average on offense, and then all of a sudden it's going to be another Buckeye win thanks to the defense.
CFN Prediction: Ohio State 30 ... Marshall 13 ... Line: Ohio State -16 | Discuss this game with experts
Must See Rating: (5 lock yourself in a room to watch - 1 Father of the Pride) ... 2.5

You will not see a sea of marshall green in the stands .... because there are not that many tickets available ..... doesn't matter how many of them find their way to Columbus. This is not a team that has a lot of tickets up for grabs.

So they can bring all the mobile homes and trailers they want ... and enjoy the
beach on the Olentangy .....

Then they can tuck their sorry tails between their sorry asses and go home.

I am tired of hearing how they are gonig to kick our ass for two years, and then
we will beg them to become the 12th team in the Big Ten.

This will be one ugly game for them ....

They will be lucky to score at all, and it will probably be OSU's most point scored by a Tressel coached team .....

Mark it down.

I watched the Marshall game with Troy State. If Marshall doesn't improve every facet of their game we are going to destroy them. Their run defense, offensive line, and qb play was awful!!!! Their qb was sacked early and often against Troy. If Marshall cannot handle Troy States defense then OSU's is gonna tear them apart.

I am predicting a blowout!!! Cincy is much better than Marshall!!! I suspect that if we play as good as we did this weeknd the score will be 40+ to 10. I'm not really concerned about this game.

You man consider changing your thinking on the game with Marshall. Troy State did not look bad at all in handling Mizzouri tonight. Granted Marshall may have taken Troy State to lightly, but now that Marshall saw what happened tonight in Alabama, it will give them hope coming into the "Shoe" I don't think it will be 40 points as you predict.

I think that it is still too early to judge a team on what happens in other games. For all we know Mizzu might not be nearly as strong as they were supposed to be. Buckeyes just need to play defense like last Saturday. They were quicker to the ball and tackled better than I ever remember in the past two years.

Well- I agree with Kipster- I doubt this is going to be a 40 point win. For a lot of reasons, first and Foremost, we haven't seen any consistency from our Offense really... and by that I mean we need to consistently hold on to the ball.

Second, Marshall's Defense isnt' too bad.

But, having said all that, we'll do waht we always do. Take away the run game (Which Marshall actually ahd a little of last year) and force Hill to beat us in the air... And I tend to think he'll be running for his life while he does it.

It could be 40 if things just melt down for Marshall early, but they've been gamers in the past, so I don't see them going away. The vegas line in this game is probably just about right.
