After watching him against Nebraska I agree that he's improved. However, I'd argue that as a team we have improved just as much, if not more than Texas. The end result would be the same.

I tend to agree with you, but the point is that we haven't yet played a complete team yet, not that we can't beat one.

New rankings are now out, pretty much what BB73 put up a few hours ago.

1. Ohio State
2. Michigan
3. USC
4. West Virginia
5. Auburn
6. Florida
7. Texas
8. Louisville
9. Notre Dame
10. California

I wonder when the Coaches poll will fall into line with the BCS and AP polls? That always seems to happen. Assuming that LLLLLLLLLLoyd and his boys up at scUM don't lose, 1 vs 2 will be awesome to watch....

Ohio State's run at No. 1 reaches 9 weeks

By the Associated Press

Monday, October 23, 2006

Ohio State's run at No. 1 is now one week short of the Buckeyes' longest to start a season.
Ohio State was on top of The Associated Press Top 25 for the ninth consecutive week when the poll was released Sunday. In 1969 under coach Woody Hayes, Ohio State started the season No. 1 and stayed there for 10 weeks. A loss to Michigan dropped the Buckeyes from the top spot.
The 1998 Buckeyes also spent nine weeks at No. 1 to start the season before being upset by unranked Michigan State on Nov. 7.
The Wolverines were No. 2 in the latest media poll, which had few changes after a weekend with far more close calls than upsets.
Southern California was No. 3, followed by West Virginia and Texas. The Mountaineers received two first-place votes. Ohio State got the other 63. No. 5 Texas needed a late field goal by backup kicker Ryan Bailey to beat Nebraska 22-20 in Lincoln.
No. 6 is Louisville, which struggled for a half before beating Syracuse 28-13. The Cardinals and West Virginia, both 7-0 and among seven remaining unbeaten teams, are off until their Big East showdown Nov. 2 in Louisville.
Three Southeastern Conference teams followed Louisville. Auburn was No. 7, Tennessee was No. 8 and Florida No. 9. The Vols got a scare from rival Alabama, winning 16-13.
Clemson, coming off a 31-7 rout of Georgia Tech, moved up two spots to No. 10. The Tigers are in the top 10 for the first time since October 2000.
No. 11 Notre Dame needed a late touchdown pass from Brady Quinn to Jeff Samardzija with 27 seconds left to beat UCLA 20-17. No. 12 California allowed Washington to tie the game with a 40-yard desperation pass into the end zone as time expired in regulation, but the Golden Bears won 24-17 in overtime. Two more SEC teams, No. 13 Arkansas and No. 14 LSU, followed Cal and were just ahead of the two other undefeated teams: No. 15 Boise State (8-0) and No. 16 Rutgers (7-0).
Wisconsin was No. 17, followed by Boston College, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Georgia Tech dropped eight spots to No. 21. Texas A&M, Missouri, Wake Forest and Oregon, which fell nine spots to 25 after losing 34-23 at Washington State, complete the Top 25.

Michigan is No. 2 behind Ohio State

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS/AL GOLDIS
Michigan had several reasons to celebrate this weekend: this touchdown by Mike Hart (obscured), a 20-6 victory over Iowa, and a rise to No. 2 in the Bowl Championship Series standings.

Six weeks from the final Bowl Championship Series standings announcement, and the race for the top two spots is gaining speed and interest.
The BCS standings were released for Week Two, and the Big Ten Conference has the top two teams. Ohio State remained No. 1 while Michigan slipped past USC by 0.0021 points -- that's 21 ten-thousandths of a point for you non-math majors.
USC, which has played in the past two BCS championship games, was idle last weekend. The Trojans are No. 1 in three of the six computer rankings used in the BCS formula. Michigan is first in two of the computers, and Ohio State is first in the other.
West Virginia and Auburn swapped spots, with the Mountaineers moving up to No. 4 and the Tigers dropping to No. 5. Auburn's computer rankings suffered because of its victory over 2-5 Tulane.
Texas, No. 5 in both human polls after its gritty, come-from-behind victory at Nebraska, got a computer boost. The Longhorns' computer average improved two spots, and UT moved up from ninth to seventh.
With Texas moving up, Louisville and Notre Dame each dropped a spot. And California, which lost its season opener at Tennessee and trails the Vols in both human polls, continued to confound Rocky Top fans. The Bears are ranked No. 10 again, with the Vols No. 11.
Arkansas is No. 13, Oklahoma is No. 19, Missouri is No. 20, Texas A&M is No. 21 and Nebraska is No. 22.
Boise State, the top-ranked team from a conference not guaranteed to send its champion to a BCS bowl, remained No. 15. The Broncos gained ground in the human polls but slipped a notch in the average computer rankings.
The BCS standings formula consists of the coaches' poll (one-third), the Harris poll (one-third) and the average of six computer rankings (one-third).
The top two teams in the final BCS rankings, which will be announced Dec. 3, will meet for the national championship game Jan. 8.

Monday Morning Quarterback

Hoeppner now knows OSU No. 1

indiana_helmets_bw_10-23-2006_NC7MVFT.jpg

As a voting member of the football coaches poll, Indiana?s Terry Hoeppner hates it when he?s right. And after a 44-3 loss to top-ranked Ohio State on Saturday in Columbus, Hoeppner knew he?s been right about the Buckeyes.
?Like I said earlier this week, I voted them No. 1 and nothing (Saturday) changed my opinion of that.?
Even though the Buckeyes had mauled seven other opponents before the Hoosiers came into Columbus, even though IU had an 0-for-14 history against No. 1 ranked teams, even though 105,000 strong is more than twice as many fans as Hoeppner is clamoring for in this week?s homecoming game against Michigan State, IU still held a lead over Ohio State ? albeit a brief 3-0 one when Austin Starr kicked a 34-yard field goal.
Ohio State then responded with 44 straight points, giving Hoeppner his worst beating since a 52-17 loss to Wisconsin on Sept. 30.
?We get the ball, go down, kick a field goal,? Hoeppner said. ?Too bad we couldn?t finish that drive off.?
The loss ended a heady two-game winning streak for IU (4-4) and a streak in which two Indiana players won Big Ten Player of the Week honors ? kick returner Marcus Thigpen for special teams in a win over Illinois and quarterback Kellen Lewis in the upset win over Iowa.
Lewis, whom Hoeppner admitted did not have a good day (15 of 28 for 106 passing yards), was spelled later in the game by former starter Blake Powers, who was 5 of 7 for 52 yards but threw two interceptions.
?(Lewis) didn?t have a lot of time,? Hoeppner said. ?I?m not going to be overly critical of any one individual, but it?s hard to find many people on our team, starting with the old head coach, who played/coached very well.
?(Lewis) didn?t have a very good game, but he wasn?t the Lone Ranger in that. I didn?t have a very good game, either.?
Looking ahead to MSU
Just when the entire football community was about ready to throw dirt on the body of the dying Michigan State Spartans, they staged one of the great comebacks in college football Saturday.
Michigan State rallied from a 38-3 deficit to Northwestern midway through the third quarter to defeat the Wildcats 41-38.
The win gives MSU (4-4) renewed hope of its own bowl aspirations. The Spartans come to Indiana on Saturday for a noon start, and Hoeppner is asking the IU fan base to show up en masse ? 50,000 strong.
Saturday?s game will be pivotal because both teams are seeking bowl berths. The Hoosiers visit Minnesota, will be home to Michigan and visit Purdue after Michigan State. After IU, the Spartans are home to Purdue and Minnesota and close out at Penn State.
?The goal we set at the beginning of the year is still in reach,? Hoeppner said. ?The challenge is still out there.
?The challenge is that we need 50,000 next week,? he said. ?That hasn?t changed. We?ll bounce back as a coaching staff and as a team. Hopefully, our fans will, too. It?s homecoming. It will be a big week; a big opportunity for us next week.?
After the game Saturday, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel offered words of encouragement to Hoeppner.
?Coach Tressel said, ?You?ll be in a bowl game,? ? Hoeppner said. ?I appreciate the confidence, the comments. I still feel the same way.?
Hoosier hits
Both IU and Ohio State came out of the game with streaks that equal 15. Indiana has lost to the No. 1 team in the country 15 straight times, and Ohio State (8-0) has a 15-game winning streak ? Lewis had his fourth game without an interception. He has thrown 121 passes since his last pick ? Ohio State quarterback and Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith had a fumble caused by freshman Jammie Kirlew, who also recovered the fumble. Both were firsts for Kirlew ? IU has a takeaway in all eight games this season.
