2007 Cavs Free Agent/Trade Rumors

Saying he's just a role player this early is a little much IMO. Guys like Donyell Marshall are role players. Varejao is a sixth man. He's our best rebounder and defender(this alone makes him worth the money IMO). He's not a good shooter, but he's smart(most of the time, though he occassionally gets a little wild, but that's rare) offensively, which allows him to get a lot of dunks and layups. He's also pretty good off the dribble. Unless he's going against an elite athlete at PF/C, he's shown that he can consistently get past a defender one on one and make something happen.

I do agree that his reputation as a flopper will result in less charge calls, but he's still a good defender without those charges. He's still good at help defense, and he's still our best rebounder. I don't see why someone who would more than likely end up our starting center wouldn't command such a contract. It's not like there are any FA out there that can replace what Andy gives us, and even if there is you'd be surprised how much they'd get on the open market.

this is the exact reason why memphis is on him. gasol wants out badly. AV can play the 5 in the west, and slide over to the 4 when warrick needs a rest. AV is not even close to being polished enough offensively to warrant $8 milion per. In fact, I'd say that the following is likely:

He's slowly earning the reputation at a flopper. It was said repeatedly throughout the playoffs. As such, he's not going to draw the same number of charges in the future. Additionally, by playing more minutes, he will wear down more, which will make him slower and only amplify the reduction of drawn charges.

AV is a role player. He comes off the bench, gives energy and plays defense. That's not worth $8 million per, period.

I am agreeing with you tsteele completely. Andy isn't going to continue to get all those calls that he has been. As bad as Drew can be on D , Andy is just as bad on O. Anytime someone throws him the ball, especially Lebron he fumbles the balls around before he evens catchs or he just completely drops it. On top of that what about when Lebron through him the ball at the top of the key and he turns around and drives to the hoop instead of giving it right back to blow that one game in playoffs? If he we could get a shotblocker for Andy in a sign and trade I would do it right now. I am not saying I wouldnt mind keeping him but not for 8-10 mil that is a lot.

Keep this in mind about how valuable bigs are in the NBA. Darko Milicic will likely command 10 million dollars per year in his next contract. Talented bigs and good point guards are always at a premium in the NBA. You can't just let a talented PF/C, even if he's inconsistent offensively, to walk. You need good bigs to stay afloat in this league. It's just a necessity. I can't imagine anyone we could get at a significantly lower price that would even approach the quality of Varejao. If any of you guys have any suggestions, throw them out.

Edit: Players like Danny Fortson and Austin Croshere make 6 million and 7 million a year. If you don't think Andy is worth 8 mil, then I don't know what to say. Look at the contracts of other similar forwards/centers, and you'd see that all of them are overpaid. It's because how rare good big men are. They're such a premium in this league.

the cavs could sign andray blatche from the wizards for far, far less than what AV will make. he isn't quite the caliber of player AV is yet, but he's only 20 and has been improving.

the bottom line is that cleveland is going to lose one, if not both of AV and Pavs. the question is what, if anything, they will get in return.

The Wizards are pretty much going to match whatever anyone offers Blatche. Why? Because that's how valuable bigs are in the NBA(even relatively unproven ones like Blatche). They'd depart with Haywood or Thomas before they gave up Blatche.

I'd rather trade Pavs for a PG and keep Andy, then try and get a shooter somewhere(rookie, FA, foreign player, wherever).

We also won't lose both. I can guarantee that. They're restricted, so we can match whatever is offered, and we most likely will for Andy, and we probably will for Sasha(unless a sign and trade is worked out for a player like Calderon).

After further review, you guys are correct. I prefer not to pay Wild Thing 8mil, especially with his offensive shortcomings and not being a starter but, he can a great backup to Gooden and Z. And when Z leaves, there's no reason he can't start in the middle.

As awkward as his shooting can be, he has pretty good hands on the run when receiving passes from LBJ, something that Z can't do. His defense is unquestionable. 8mil is too much but when you think of him playing 2 positions well combined with his age and the fact that LBJ loves him is it really too much?

Forget Lewis, he just signed with Orlando.

Forget Blake, he wants the whole mid-level.

The Cavs contacted Mo Pete as soon as the league allowed and he may be a decent sign, because he fits the defensive end and is a career 37% from 3. The Jazz were hot after him and were rumored to be in the lead.

At what point though, does this team look at shooting as the main priority? Mo Pete is only a 42% career shooter from inside the arc, but he's great defensively.

In other news, Huges was offered to the Celts, but they chose Allen instead (no shit). Snow was offered to the Knicks for Dickau and a turd, but that fell through also. I'll give them credit for trying.

I match the $8M offer... and move on... It's over paying, but staying with VALUE players ensures you get below average performers... and we have far too many of them already consuming too much of the bench...

LBJ likes Andy a lot.. and you better keep LBJ happy...

That is the key. If Lebron says match Gilbert is going to match. The Cavs aren't going to be under the salary cap for as long as Lebron is a Cav so as long as they don't mind some luxary tax they need to keep the good players that they have. Baring a sign and trade that would bring Gasol to the Cavs losing Varejao takes them backward next year. Keep what they have, look at a good trade if it's there, and use the MLE to get 1 or 2 players that will help take them to the next level. IMO the team that we had this year will only get better with more time. There's no use blowing it up now. Lebron, Gibson, Varjao, Gooden, Pavlovic, and hopefully Brown are the building blocks for the future. Everyone else is expendable for the right move and even a few of those guys could be had for the right price.

Exactly. Keep our core, wait for our dumb contracts to expire(Snow, Jones, and Z, though his isn't really terrible, it just takes away a lot of our flexibility), work the draft and make smart FA signings.

One player I'm surprised isn't a bigger target is Grant Hill. I think he would be great coming off the bench in case one of Gibson or Brown hits a rough patch, and he'd be a good, relatively cheap veteran.

Actually the rumored contract isn't bad at all.

Beacon Journal | 07/03/2007 | Cavs' Varejao gets hefty contract offer

Windhorst is reporting it will be a 5 year, 40 million contract with the first year being around $6 million.

In my opinion this is an easy contract to match. Also I cannot believe AV would actually sign for this low which is a steal for us as it would be lower than Gooden but for 5 years it would get hefty near the end of the contract.

But, I would get greedy. IF AV signs this I would just tell Memphis that we intend to match the deal after 10 days (thus killing their cap room as there would be a cap hold until we either match or decline the contract). Then I tell them we won't match it if they agree to a sign and trade sending us Hakim Warrick and Kyle Lowry.

Looks like Boobie will be playing on the cavs summer league team. Others of note on the team, former tOSU center Terence Dials, Shannon Brown, and LeBron's high school teammate and Akron U grad Romeo Travis. Also on the team is Kevin Pittsnogle from WVU who was a guy alot of people were high on a year ago.

Best name on the team goes to Boniface N'Dong...

Fisher

From Cleveland.com

Cavs might have a chance at Derek Fisher. Was let go by Jazz because 11 month old daughter has brain tumor. Looking for good treatment center a.k.a. Cleveland Clinic.

More regarding AV signing and Mo Peterson not coming to Cleveland
