2007 Fall Practice Tidbits

To put it bluntly, this team looks like it intends to make some fucking noise this year...

There was an article in the Dispatch this week talking about rebuilding years and how the Bucks reacted when they lost as much O as they did last season.

The two seasons they used for comparison were 1999 (6-6) and 2004 (8-4). On the surface it might suggest anything above 8-4 is over achieving.

I say Balderdash.

1999 was the downhill slide of the Cooper era. It was what it was.

2004 was IMHO - and I hate to cast aspersions on former coaches - more than anything about Mark Snyder. In 2004 we had a three game losing streak where we gave up a total of 90 points (against NU, Wisky and Iowa - not Michigan and Florida). Our D under achieved and the team attitude was easy to read between the lines of player comments when Snyder left (a departure that I still feel was facilitated) after only one season as DC.

I am very concerned about the lack of senior leadership on this team. But damn - the talent. New QB? Sure. But Boeckman is the most experienced first year QB in school history. If Beanie stays healthy we are indeed ready to-

make some fucking noise

the comparisons of 2004 being applied to the 2007 season are not sound. i have been saying this for a while.

many would agree, coaching factors notwithstanding, that the biggest issue surrounding that team was lack of experience.

in 2003, how much PT did doug datish and tj downing get? hardly any. zwick or troy at qb, almost none. really, how much in game PT did carpenter, pitcock, jay richardson et. all get on defense? very little.

contrast that to the amount of PT that the new starters coming in this year got during the '06 campaign. And it wasn't simply mop-up duty either.

agreed. the platoon system that Coach Tressel ran last year was clearly designed to get the backups valuable experience for this year. i think that the rotation that Coach Tressel utilized both on the O-line and in the entire D will pay dividends that we could only dream about back in '04...

Re: 1999 and 2004 comparisons....

I guess I see it more akin to 1995 to 1996.

In 1995 Ohio State lost a Heisman winner and starting RB Eddie George, a 3 year starter at QB, Rickey Dudley, Terry Glenn ... or essentially the entire offense. Ohio State returned, however, a tested defense which included Shawn Springs, Ty Howard, Vrable, Finkes, Fickell etc. That team was one slip away from a National Title. Who did we replace those guys with? David Boston, Mike Wiley, Joe Germaine... to name a couple.

Granted, expecting this year's team to run all the way to a one loss season, or better, is a tall order. Just making the optimistic case that 1996 is as good an example than 1999 or 2004. I would say the 2004 squad is the closer comparison than 1999 in that in 04 OSU replace outgoing studs with guys like Troy Smith, Ted Ginn, Gonzo and so on. Like Oh8ch alluded, that 8 - 4 team was a 4 game stretch from being a pretty damn good year. If memory serves, only the Iowa game was a game which OSU was just not in it, and while losing to NU is a once in 30 year occasion, I guess ... the point is, that team didn't find it's heart until later...

In 1996 Ohio State was in "reload" mode, as they are now. In 2004, that was the beginning of the current reload mode. I don't see the 1999 comparison.

I am sooo pumped to see our defense this year, add Gholston and Rose and Russel and a few others to this group... like Mili said, they're going to make some fucking noise this year.
