2007 Preseason and Regular season Polls

Ok let me explain, the "PERCEPTION" of the big ten and the jan 8th game may have some influence on where our opponents get ranked or NR and this hurts the SOS.

This SOS thing is going to move the computers which is exactly why the computers currently have USF ranked #1 and tOSU #5

Sorry when you look at the BCS breakdown and see we're ranked 1st in the Harris and the coaches poll but 5th in the computer ranking it says to me that this other 1/3 of this BCS system is something that may help an SEC team move up. Kentucky is ranked 7th in the BCS and will probably keep winning and this will also be helpful to LSU.

I don't like it and I hope it doesn't happen but the reality is tOSU can't control how poorly our opponents have played. (effects SOS, right?)
PSU losing 2 games isn't going to help either, we win and they just sucked and we lose and we lost to a 2 loss team in the B10. Not to mention an over rated wisc. team coming to town it's not as helpful to us because our opponents are crapping all over themselves in games they should be winning.

tOSU needs to pound these guys remaining on the schedule to dust and keep the pollsters impressed:osu:

sorry I'm not trying to get in a pissing match here but it's really not hard to see what I'm saying. It may or may not happen but if we win unconvincingly and our B10 opponents don't play well in other games well, ya know.

Oregon State, Stanford, Colorado, Auburn, App State, Kentucky are all teams that stink as badly as any OSU and USF have played. USF has in fact beaten Auburn. OSU and USF deserve to be ranked where they are ranked.

Amen to that!:osu:

Good point I still think UW gave a top ten USC a great game shortly after we played them, USC however has issues too.

Great discussions on this board and I feel lucky to have found you guys!

What a great feeling to get REAL college football feedback from somewhere other than the talking heads.:smash:

I don't know how in the hell you can argue the SOS has shit to do with January 8, 2007. Do you think there is some committee coming up with SOS? That's the only rational explaination I can concieve of for your argument, and even then it's wrong. The computers, as his been my point to your assertion, DO NOT consider last year... or any other year, for that matter. Put the notion out of your head, it's making you look like an idiot.

Yeah, the computer ratings.... Which, aren't biased towards the SEC because the SEC beat the Big Ten in last year's BCS championship (as you ridiculously argue) but because the SEC is a tough conference this year... thus, a loss to Kentucky doesn't hurt like a loss to Stanford... last year has shit to do with it.

And, fact is this... if OSU gets jumped by 2 teams of equal record, Ohio State has no right to bitch based on it's absurdly easy schedule. But, the fact is, no 1 loss team will jump OSU. The problem with the computers is they dont SEE anything, and simply crunch numbers. The problem with people is, they don't understand numbers and have bias. The two together gives a pretty reasonable ranking.... at least for what it's worth in and of itself.

Would you "MIND" doing me a favor and dropping this conversation? You're depressing the hell out of me, and I had hoped to enjoy this week with my Buckeyes at #1. If you want to speculate about doom theories; then, at least, keep them to a one post minimum.

6 ...... Big 10 ................ 1.646 ..... 0.7996

Don't see data for Anderson & Hester, as their Web page hasn't been updated since last years final results.

The SEC is a unanimous #1 in the five computer polls that I was able to find after Week 8, while the Big 10 is ranked #2, #4, #5, #6 and #6 across the five -- so over half of the computers report that the Big 10 is at the bottom or very near the bottom in relative conference strength this year.

Why? Because of OOC records.

SEC teams have lost OOC games to the following teams: Cal, Missouri, S. Florida, and Florida St.

Big 10 teams have lost OOC games to the following teams: Oregon, Missouri, Iowa St., Duke, Bowling Green, Florida Atlantic, and Appalachian St.

Blame Michigan and blame Minnesota. It has nothing to do with records from last year, it has everything to do with the fact that the Big 10 just isn't very strong this year. Minnesota, Michigan St, Indiana are all transitioning to new coaches, Northwestern and Wisconsin are under second year/first time head coaches, and Illinois is three years into Zook's tenure. This type of coaching turnover can usually be offset by having dominant programs at the top, but Iowa has gone into the toilet, Michigan regularly loses games it should win, and PSU and Purdue combined might make one consistent, competitive team on both sides of the ball.

I think Big 10 fans just need to accept the fact that we're going to hit a few lean years similar to what the Big XII and ACC have been going through, and that has nothing to do with the national media, BCS computers, or poll voters hatin' on the Big 10.

On the positive side, that should enable Ohio State to enjoy a wildly successful stretch of conference dominance, though national perception of the entire conference will absolutely be predicated on how the Buckeyes perform in their bowl games and OOC games, possibly in similar fashion to the way the old Big East was judged on Miami, and the old ACC was judged on Florida State.

Anywho ... all that's just my rambling mess on top of the current discussion. Bottom line, OSU's current SOS sucks, hence we're being hammered in the computer polls, because we've play Northwestern (lost to Duke) and Minnesota (lost to BGSU and FAU) in their OOC games. Our OOC record is spotless, and outside of Michigan, all our 5-2 future opponents' OOC records are spotless too against sub Top-25 teams. Our SOS is about to take a HUGE jump, and we'll wind up in the Top 2 of every computer provided the Bucks keep on winning.

Our OOC SOS is also hurt because we dont have any OOC rivals that we can count on playing every year and being decent every year. Most years we make up for that by playing a very good team OOC (Texas in '05 and '06, USC in '08 and '09, etc), but when you get a year where you play Washington at Washington, and have nothing to fall back on, then it hurts. If Washington was 4-2 right now vs 2-4, I dont think half as many people would be railing on our OOC SOS, but there not. If we had that USC-ND OOC game every year, then we could count on our OOC SOS being respectable. But we dont have that consistency, so we have to hope that the big-time team we schedule is still big-time by the time we get to play them.

Also, people point out that we play 3 Ohio pansies, but almost every school in the country does the same (for example, LSU- Middle Tennessee, Tulane, Lousiana Tech, and VT). 3 D1-AA or lower tier 1A schools, and 1 good BCS conference foe. Just so happens our good BCS conference foe hasn't been very good since after we scheduled them.
