2007 Spring Game (Gray 17 Scarlet 9 final)

My final feelings:
QB: Much to be desired...yes there were flashes, but I am far from confident in any of the 3 we have. Henton is definetly a year away and he made some flat out awful decision today, though the physical ability is there and I think he will be a talent down the road. Shoenhoft is pretty nimble and obviously has a great arm, but it just seems he can't make the big throw when it counts. Couldn't get a real good read on him today. Boeckman wasn't spectacular but he did a pretty decent job. He can make the downfield throw and makes pretty decent decisions. I am worried about his mobility though because he didn't look good at all under pressure. Now I realize that the QB play will get better with the starting OL and Beanie in the backfield, but there were other things mentioned above that could pose a problem in any situation. Boeckman will be under pressure sometimes, Henton can't rely on athletic ability alone, and Shoenhoft forces balls and can't seem to make the big throw.
RB: Mo Wells did an excellent job imo. He has a very nice burst and we need to get him out in space and off tackle plays where he can cut back. The walk-ons did decent and I really liked K.C. Christian.
FB: Saw a bit of Olson and he looked good but I would say Dionte gets the nod. Pretty good play overall.
WR: We are going to be alright here it seems...Small is going to have to be huge for us though. Hartline and Robiskie are both good receivers but we are going to need a flat out playmaker and I think Small is going to be that guy. Super quick. Devon Lyons looks like he may be ready for a breakout year though. I also think Dukes may factor in at receiver this year as well. I see in order of Robiskie, Hartline, Small, Lyons, and Dukes.
TE: Brandon Smith had a real nice grab (though it was on a walk on) Rory Nicol should be solid but I honestly think Ballard will be our biggest TE threat offensively this year.
OL: Didn't pay attention to anyone individually really other than Boone and Moses. Boone looked great I though and Andrew Moses did one heck of a job at center. I think he has some real promise. The OL showed some nice flashes but it's hard to evaluate with all the injuries.
DE: We are absolutely stacked. Gholston, Wilson, Rose, and Barrow are going to all be spectacular in the rotation. Wilson looks HUGE. May even see some Ryan Williams. We haven't been this loaded since '02.
DT: Overall I liked what I saw. Larimore seemed to be in the backfield a lot and I am confident in Worthington in the trenches. Garnier is showing some promise. Denlinger should be solid. Abdallah I wanted to see more out of but I think he could contribute. Of course the OL they faced isn't what they will see this year with all the injuries, so I would say the verdict may still be out.
LB: Stacked, stacked, stacked. I think your starters are Lauranaitis, Freeman, and Grant. Grant is an absolute beast and you have to love his speed off the edge. He is going to be a sack machine. Freeman looks amazingly quick this spring and Lauranaitis looks even bigger and badder. Then you have a very solid Homan, Curtis Terry is making all kinds of plays, Spitler is always around the ball it seems, and Thad Gibson I wanted to see play. Mark Johnson as well.
DB: Impressed today with a lot of people. Shaune Lane had an excellent game. Jenkins we know will be good, Washington should be a stud(though I didn't see much of him, which is probably a good thing), and Evege looked the part. I wanted to see some of James Scott though. Grant Schwartz is a guy they need to find a way to get on the field. I just think he is going to be a playmaker and I loved watching his INT today. Moeller looks decent but I think he is a year away. He has good instincts mostly but I think some times he relies on them so much that he gets himself out of position at safety. Still adjusting to the position imo. Kurt Coleman is going to be the starter along with Russel imo, which also brings me to the point we still have JamO and Russel to equate in. Should be well stocked here.
K: Both kickers look solid.
P: Trapasso is a stud...I got so pumped to see him run down the field and level that guy. Our punter is an athlete.
Special teams: Kickoff coverage concerned me a bit. Kick returners look good and you just hold your breath every time Small gets the kick. I want to see James Scott return the ball because his highlight film was amazing on returns. Punt coverage was superb and the returner are iffy...if they want someone to just catch it, Robiskie is your man. If they want a serious threat, they need Small back there imo. Should be solid again in special teams though and we should never worry much about this department with JT at the helm.
Overall: Our defense is going to be amazing. They should carry the team on their backs if need be. I agree with Slick Rick though...the beginning of the year I see OSU's offense not being very potent. But as the year progresses, I see us starting to click more and forming an identity. Lucky for us, the first half of the schedule is very weak and by the time we could possibly lose, we should have that identity just about formed. I think we are looking at a great year of football though.

Do you mean like fourth and one against Purdoooo

Totally different situation. One more run scarlet wins the game. We had to have a TD or a first down in the Purdue game. It was a called pass play, but not necessarily a deep call as well.

Defense rules in Ohio State Scarlet-Gray game
Saturday, April 21, 2007
By RUSTY MILLER
AP Sports Writer

COLUMBUS ? Mike Conley Jr. should stick to playing basketball instead of coaching football.

The basketball point guard, who announced 24 hours earlier that he would make himself available for the NBA draft, was the honorary head coach of the Scarlet squad which blew a 9-0 fourth-quarter lead to lose to the Gray 17-9 on Saturday in the Buckeyes? annual spring intrasquad football scrimmage.

Daequan Cook and fellow freshman Greg Oden joined Conley in adding their names to the draft.

The Scarlet lost because of a pass call that led to a turnover, when all it needed was to run a play or two and kick a game-winning field goal.

Asked if he had any regrets about his play-calling, Conley laughed and said, ?Just that last one.?

A crowd of 75,301 basked in the sun at Ohio Stadium.

Shut out heading into the fourth quarter, the Gray squad ? with basketball teammate Jamar Butler calling the plays ? roared back on Aaron Pettrey?s 40-yard field goal and Rob Schoenhoft?s 6-yard scoring pass to Brandon Smith for a 10-9 lead with 5:24 remaining.

Ohio State spring game / Gray 17, Scarlet 9

Boeckman stays at top of list

Tressel says three QBs did nothing this spring to change depth chart

By Marla Ridenour

COLUMBUS - It was hard to tell what was more stunning about Ohio State's spring game.
That 75,301 fans showed up at Ohio Stadium on a cloudless Saturday and nearly filled the old Horseshoe -- the 17,000-seat south stands were closed.
Or that honorary coach Mike Conley Jr. elected to let quarterback Todd Boeckman throw from the Gray's 14 with 46 seconds remaining when the Scarlet needed only a field goal to win.
Boeckman was sacked by senior linebacker Larry Grant and fumbled, and Grant returned the ball 80 yards for a touchdown in a 17-9 Gray victory.

Doug Lesmerises' spring game observations

First and 10
Doug Lesmerises' 10 things to note from Saturday's Scarlet and Gray game:
1. It's good for everyone that Mo Wells had a productive spring as the temporary No. 1 running back with Chris Wells sidelined by an ankle injury. Jim Tressel was most pleased with the way Wells found patience this spring in picking his holes and his cutback lanes when bouncing outside. But even though Wells had a steady 48 yards on 14 carries Saturday, the game showed how desperately the Buckeye offense needs Chris Wells to be its No. 1 offensive threat.
"I thought Mo Wells had an excellent spring," Tressel said. "To not have Chris, I would have loved to have him have those reps. But there's nothing I can do about it. We've got to make sure he does a great job of rehabbing, which will not be a problem. But I think he needs to go and study from a football standpoint. He needs to do it on his own, and he'll be ready to go. I think he was in his jersey and jeans and he asked to go in for a couple plays today."
Mo Wells proved in 15 practices that he can be a legit No. 2 back if need be, grab maybe 10 carries a game. But the quarterback that wins the starting job will need the help only Chris Wells can provide.

Quarterbacks struggle in Scarlet and Gray game

Columbus -- Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith spent a good part of his Heisman-winning season a year ago answering questions about why he wasn't running the ball more.
In their first public appearance since Smith's departure, the Buckeyes, and the 75,301 fans at Ohio Stadium, should have grown tired of watching quarterbacks on the move by the end of Saturday's Scarlet and Gray spring game.
Won by the Gray, 17-9, when Larry Grant sacked Todd Boeckman with 30 seconds left and returned the ensuing fumble 80 yards for a touchdown, the game featured 19 often panicked scrambles by OSU's three quarterback contenders versus 21 completed passes.
Smith ran a lot early in his career, too, but injuries on the offensive line, constant pressure by the defensive line and the learning left to be done by Boeckman, Rob Schoenhoft and Antonio Henton led to a lot of broken plays Saturday -- and few of them ended spectacularly.
Coach Jim Tressel placed 75 percent of the blame for the scrambles on effective pressure and breakdowns in protection, with linemen Kirk Barton, Jon Skinner and Kyle Mitchum all sidelined with injuries. The other 25 percent was happy feet from three guys still finding their way.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Dispatch Ohio State football beat writer Tim May kept Dispatch.com readers in the know on the spring fling today at Ohio Stadium with quarter-by-quarter updates of the Gray's 17-9 victory in the annual spring game:
First quarter
On a beautiful sunny day, it appears that a crowd of 50,000 has shown for the Ohio State Scarlet and Gray spring game. And they were treated quickly to an example of what the 2007 Buckeyes might be all about, at least early this fall.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Antonio Henton, trying to hit tight Brandon Smith in the right flat at midfield, was intercepted by linebacker Marcus Freeman. Freeman raced back 50 yards untouched for the touchdown.

OSU Spring Game Gray 17, Scarlet 9
Schoenhoft's solid day keeps Buckeyes' QB picture unclear

Tressel says Boeckman is still No. 1, but his fumble sealed the game, while Schoenhoft threw the day's only TD pass.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State sophomore quarterback Rob Schoenhoft was much like the record crowd of 75,301 that showed up for the spring game Saturday: No matter what happened, they both knew their team couldn't lose.
Schoenhoft suited up for each side, playing for the Scarlet in the first half and then leading a fourth-quarter charge by the Gray, which won, 17-9.

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman donned a scarlet jersey in the spring game Saturday, and he apparently also borrowed Harry Potter's invisibility cloak.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Antonio Henton whipped a pass toward tight end Brandon Smith, but Freeman picked it off in full stride and raced 49 yards for the game's first score.
