Hey does anyone know why Woodland Hills was dropped from the event?? It's a shame because Coach Novak was the one who recommended our team to the promoters for the classic. We are very excited to have the opportunity to be play against a great team like Colerain and I know that our kids are thrilled. Thanks in advance

Mkeesport, I'll leave your question up, but you might have more luck finding answers on yappi.com which is much more geared to Ohio HS FB. We are interested as well, but there you will find many more diehard HS FB fans who may know more. Teams occasionally get shuffled around in this event, sorry to hear your team was a casualty of such.

Actually our team is still playing in the classic, but this teams coach recommended us for the classic and we were just curious as to why they were dropped. Thanks again.:)

Herbstreit grid event expands with time

By CHRIS EASTERLING
The Independent

When Kirk Herbstreit put together his first ?Ohio vs. USA? challenge back in 2005, it was a quaint four-team event held in conjunction with the Ohio State-Texas showdown the following day in Columbus. The fourth edition of what is now the ?Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series? will commence Aug. 30-31 with 60 teams involved in 15 games at three different sites, including one in Texas.
Among those teams participating will be the Massillon Tigers, who will face the Jordan (Utah) Beetdiggers at Fawcett Stadium in the 8 p.m. nightcap of a quadruple-header on Saturday, Aug. 30.
?It?s been great to see the event really turn into a national property,? Herbstreit, the former Ohio State quarterback and current ESPN college football analyst, said in an e-mail to The Independent on Tuesday, ?starting with a small, two-game event four years ago in Columbus to a 15-game event in two states and three cities with national television coverage today. We?ve spent a lot of time internally growing the event and could not have done it without our partners at Burger King.?

MIDDLETOWN ? Indianapolis Warren Central (Ind.) figures to be a formidable foe for Middletown in Week 2 of the upcoming high school football season. The two will meet at 2 p.m. Aug. 30 in the second of four games to be played at Paul Brown Stadium as part of the Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series, which officially announced this year's schedule on Tuesday, July 1.
The Warriors became the first Indiana high school to win four consecutive state titles when they won the top spot in Division 5A from 2003-06.
"We're extremely honored to have the opportunity to play in such a prestigious event," MHS Athletic Director Gary Lebo said. "Some of the top programs in the country are playing in this."
Other games on the Aug. 30 Herbstreit schedule in Cincinnati feature Elder vs. Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) at 11 a.m., Colerain vs. McKeesport (Pa.) at 5 p.m. and St. Xavier vs. Prattville (Ala.) at 8 p.m.

Anybody know of ticket info for this? We usually go to the State champ games up there each year, and I am asking this question before going looking myself, because I am lazy

The last couple of years you could just order them off the website...I haven't checked this year.

If you're coming to Stark County, I've always been able to get tickets at the gates. With teams traveling so far, they can't fill 20,000 seats...

A single ticket will get you in for all the games in that stadium too.

Herbstreit excited to see football series grow
Saturday, July 26, 2008
BY Chris Beaven
REPOSITORY SPORTS WRITERMultimedia

CINCINNATI College football pays the bills for Kirk Herbstreit, and he loves spending a Saturday afternoon on any campus with a game.

But his first love can be found under the lights of Friday nights. And that's why his two-day high school football extravaganza returns for a fourth year, including another stop in Stark County.

The Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series expands to Texas Stadium next month, while also keeping its Ohio roots strong with 11 games at Fawcett Stadium and Cincinnati's Paul Brown Stadium.

"This state loves high school football," said Herbstreit, a college football analyst for ABC/ESPN and a former Ohio State quarterback. "We all have the same passion for it. And it's exciting to see this grow."

Herbstreit and his father, Jim, co-founder of the series, spoke Friday afternoon during a teleconference from Paul Brown Stadium. Several coaches involved in this year's games also spoke, including Massillon's Jason Hall.

"It's a great situation for Massillon," Hall said. "We like playing in the big games. The city's used to it, the fans are used to it, and the kids are used to it. ... We're excited about it and definitely will be playing in the (event) as long as we're invited."

Herbstreit series lacking area teams
Saturday, July 26, 2008

Plain Dealer Reporter

The Kirk Herbstreit Varsity Football Series will not feature a Cleveland-area team next month, a situation Herbstreit hopes can be avoided in future years.

"We'll continue to try to welcome [area teams] any year and every year," Herbstreit said during a news conference touting the event Friday at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati.

Herbstreit, an ESPN college football analyst and former Ohio State quarterback, began the series featuring premier high school football teams in 2005. It has grown from a two-game event to the 15 games that will be played on Aug. 30-31 at Paul Brown Stadium, Canton's Fawcett Stadium and Texas Stadium in Dallas.
