College football | National honors await Buckeyes past and present

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The National Football Foundation's awards dinner tonight at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York is a black-tie affair, but it will be heavily tinged with scarlet and gray. Three men associated with Ohio State are among the honorees: Former coach John Cooper is being honored for his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, athletic director Gene Smith will receive the John L. Toner Award, and senior receiver Brian Robiskie is among the finalists for the Draddy Award, sometimes called the "Academic Heisman."
"This is a special time, a special moment for Buckeyes," Smith said. "It's huge, and I'm just blessed to be a part of it."
For Smith and Cooper, it will be an emotional evening. Both say they owe a great debt to football.
Smith grew up in Cleveland and accepted a scholarship to play defensive line for Notre Dame. He then was an assistant coach for the Fighting Irish before briefly going into private business, but since 1985 he has been an athletic director -- at Eastern Michigan, Iowa State, Arizona State and Ohio State.

Ohio State football: Laurinaitis, Jenkins log plenty of award miles

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Win or lose, James Laurinaitis said, there is still a reward for being on the major college football awards circuit this time of the year. "It's cool to be in the presence of guys who are making plays every weekend, the great players across the country," he said. "I'm honored just to be mentioned in the same sentence with these guys."
The Ohio State senior linebacker spoke from experience. Already a three-time All-American with the 2006 Nagurski and 2007 Butkus awards, he's on the road again this week.
Tonight he'll be in Houston, where he is a finalist for the Lombardi Award. On Thursday, he'll move on to Orlando, where he's up for the Bednarik on ESPN's college football awards show. And he'll be in Newport Beach, Calif., on Sunday night as a finalist for the Lott trophy.
In between, the OSU co-captain said, "I'll fly back to Columbus Friday night because I want to practice Saturday morning. Then Saturday night I'll fly out after practice to Orange County for the Lott."
The Buckeyes are practicing in preparation for the Jan. 5 Fiesta Bowl against No. 3 Texas.

Congrats to MJ.

He's got the Vols fans worked up in a frenzy on their scout.com board.

I noticed that too. I admittedly haven't watched Berry enough to say he didn't deserve it though. Jenkins played lights out all year. Berry's stats are pretty sick though.

Yeah, well fuck Berry.

Way to go Malcolm. You deserved it. Obviously, the Thorpe people agree.

Not only is Jenkins taking home this award something special for him, but it is also something we certainly needed as a program. As great as we have done producing NFL caliber DB's in the last 20 years, hardware is a desired pickup.

This will only help with recruiting future DB's.
