2008 Preseason and Regular season Polls

#2 would be ridiculously high. Kansas would be the only team in that top 10 that OSU would be favored against.
True. Honestly, I could careless about the preseason rankings. That being said, if we return JL, Boone, Gholston, and Jenkins, and get recruits like TP and JJ, with the talent that should be ready to go next year, #2 isn't ridiculously high at all. Will all that happen? Most likely not, but there's a chance.

The first thing I thought about regarding the NCG was the impact on recruits. I thought we probably lost guys like TP, JJ and Wells. But I think it may have actually helped a bit. Tress can now go in and tell these kids "You know what, we may have some positions open next season that you can battle for." Im not saying I expect a lot of changes to be made, but guys like Pryor could certainly come in and add a spark like Tebow, or JJ could come in and start at guard, definately, and I think these recruits will see that. Not to mention, if Gholston does leave, I feel we have a good shot at Wells. Next season will certainly be exciting :oh:

2008 Preseason Rankings

I'm interested in knowing everyones top 5 rankings for next year...based on the information we have about who is leaving and who is not thus far.

1. Oklahoma -- Should have lots of returning starters. Did pretty well last year, and will most likely improve this year.

2. Ohio State -- Beanie Wells is the man. Period, dot, end of sentence. Now all we need is for Boeckman to either improve, or find a second hand man (Henton??) who can get more playing time in his place. Tress needs to not be so impatient with Beanie's running game and it will all work out. If we beat USC then we will definitely be seeing a NC game again next year.

3. Georgia -- They finished their season out really strong. Lots of returning starters.

4. Missouri -- Really good defense players, most of whom should be coming back.

5. USC -- Losing their QB will be a hard hit, but other than that they seem to be keeping a lot of their good players. Finished season strong, likely to return in full force in the 2008 season. I am really looking forward to the OSU game in September.

One wonders about the hit our ranking will take as a result of the general assumptions about the Big Ten? We may debut at about #5 if voters are affected by the jabbering of the "sports journalists".

probably....in fact I'll be surprised if Ohio State is even in the top 5.

That said, next year will work out like this year, if Ohio State goes out and takes care of their own business everything will work out.

I was ranking them based on my own opinions. Now what I REALLY think will happen is that OSU will definitely be #5 tops. The whole "weak Big 10 conference" is gonna hurt us, not to mention our recent loss. However, we didn't get annihilated like we did against Florida, and we didn't get ranked TOO low last year. But like you said, as long as we take care of our business, we'll get to our rightful ranking soon enough.

I like Georgia as #1. They have young everything, and they all got experience this year and performed well. They should be extremely good, better next year than they were at the end of the year this year.

Oklahoma #2. Young talent at many positions, like Georgia. They performed well for the most part. No reason to get any worse, and I believe they're getting their starting RB back from injury. I could be wrong, though. I hate OU and don't keep up to date with them.

OSU #3. IF Laurinaitis and Jenkins come back, I could see putting us at 2. But we have big game experience, and we're going to have more than a chip on our shoulder (probably more like this: http://www.paleothea.com/Pictures/Atlas.jpg)

But, we do have Beanie. And he is a monster. He should get 50 carries per game. :tongue2:

USC #4. I know, ESPN gives USC way too much love, but they are always loaded. Their season will depend on Mark Sanchez, but USC QBs usually perform decent, at very worst.

Florida #5. I hate this, but their offense is going to be great next year, and their defense is going to improve. Even if their defense improves a little, they'll be a much better team. I hate them and don't want this to be true. They are losing their best DE to the draft, though.

Missouri almost slipped in at #5.

I can definitely see Florida being really good this year. If I had extended my rankings I probably would've had them at 6 or so. And I agree -- It hurts to have to say that. I can't stand that team! LSU I can stomach, Florida I cannot.

Oklahoma #1. It is hard for me to come up with a clear number 1 here.. there are a lot of good teams but all have signifcant ? marks. I went with OU because they are going to be very experienced. Have a pretty favorable schedule and could easily run the table.

Florida #2. Tebow is all that... Kid is a warrior and is a blast to watch. Defense will get better, but they will miss Harvey for sure. They are bringing in a nice recruiting class so will only be better. Still not a dependable RB and you have to that to win it all but what Tebow and Percy does is make up for that a bit but still have them at number 2.

USC #3. Loaded with talent like every year. I think they will be on a mission after not living up to expectations and could easily be number 1. The season will rest on Mark Sanchez and I think he will perform well since they have a VERY good running game to rely on.

Georgia #4. They are still young but they do have a boat load of talent both on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. I think they lose a SEC game or 2 but still one of the better teams in the nation.

WVU #5. - Easy schedule.. Pat White is amazing... Devine will be awesome. Will be better on defense and will play with a chip on their shoulder I believe. They easily could find themeselves in the BCS title game next year.

We've been to two straight title games and had only 2 senior starters this season. Even with some early departures we are loaded and there's no way we aren't in the top five.

On the face of it, I agree. And I can't wait to hear the whining from the national media types.

However my rankings don't count in the AP or coaches poll, both of which (although the effect will be less in the coaches poll) will penalize Ohio State and the Big Ten due to it.

Milli -

It was tough not putting them in there, but my list is really a break down of who I think are the best teams and how they will be voted etc...

What kept me from putting OSU in the top 5 is.. I think we lose Vern, James, and Malcom. That is a HUGE blow to the D. Our DT 's are suspect and I do not believe we have the QB or explosive enough WR's to have a top ranked team. Hope to god I am proved wrong.. but that is the way I see it.
