2008 tOSU QB discussion (official thread)

Well known but seldom remembered fact: Troy was not a pre-season favorite for the Heisman. He made himself a favorite very early in the season; but pre-season he wasn't on very many lists across the nation.
I almost never disagree with you, but the Heisman Pundit sure had Troy #3 after everybody's favorite and Adrian Peterson. The HP is one of the best at figuring out who has the best chance to win.

Actually, he was #3 on almost everyone's list behind Quinn and Peterson.

OK, poor choice of words; but you guys have made my point for me.

He wasn't the favorite on many lists, preseason; which is how I should have worded it the first time.

The fact that so many had him #3 at the start is proof enough that he was not the front-runner at the start, which was my point.

As far as Todd goes though; while almost no one is predicting a Heisman campaign (not even the best player in his own backfield), it is worth noting that he had one of the highest completion percentages (season) in OSU history. It's not like he's a bum. He's a very good QB who was money, even under pressure, early in the year. After that, he dropped off the way some guys do after a concussion. I'm not saying he had one, so please, no speculation based on me comparing his drop-off to guys who did have one.

As I've said before, I think he wasn't accustomed to playing from behind, and it showed. Now that he's been though the experience; he has a chance to step up. I think there's a good chance that he will.

True, but his completion percentage and TD/INT ratio went to shit over the last three games:

35-62 (56.5%), 469 yards, 2 TDs, 5 INTs

Regardless of why his production/efficiency dropped off, if Todd can't regain his mid-season form then it'll be time for a QB change, pronto.

I think it's very simple. He doesn't handle pressure. He doesn't sense it, he doesn't step up in the pocket, he doesn't throw the ball away, and he throws wildly into coverage. As teams slowly figured this out last year, he wasn't reading the blitzes well and he panicked. I don't mean to sound arrogant (because I'm definitely not a football wizard), but I thought it was fairly obvious.

By the way, I'm in no way trying to bash TB. I'm actually a big Boeckman fan, and I think he'll be our starter next year. Just pointing to what I think he needs to improve upon.

I was pleased with Todd's performance this year. I just do not see a high ceiling with regard to his improvement. I also am concerned that he did not play against a very strong defensive schedule. I thought that Michigan State found something and everyone after capitalized. MSU, Illini, Wisc, Michigan run those stats. I give him PSU but think that was a vastly over rated team. Can he improve absolutely. Does he need to absolutely like everyone, I just think Henton would have been able to do it and with his pending transfer will be up to Bauserman or a recruit.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this official or a real possibility?

Boeckman IS our starter, and he did great this year OVERALL. Like Mili said though if he cant' regain his composure it will be tough to leave him in there. His play really put us in a bind the last 3 games of the year. If michigan would've been able to stop beanie (or any team for that matter) we could've been in trouble. It's almost like teams invited us to run the ball and took away our passing game so we were one demensional. If Michigan could've done anything against our defense we would've lost all three games because of our inability to throw the football.

Also if Henton stays or if Pryor comes here Boeckman is going to feel the heat from a pressure stand point to preform. Because as we know everyone loves the back up QBs... especially ones who remind them of their 2006 Heisman Trophy winner

Boeckman welcomes any and all competitors

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Todd Boeckman acknowledges some missteps, but he's not worried about hearing footsteps.

Despite putting up one of the better seasons as a passer in Ohio State history, he might find himself in the odd position of defending his starting quarterback job heading into spring practice.

That's a product of Boeckman's struggles down the stretch in 2007 and the emergence of at least one younger, more mobile competitor for 2008.

It's a good thing Boeckman is so easygoing, at least outwardly. This sort of pressure could buckle someone with less resolve.

"I've always got to go out and prove something," Boeckman said. "Even though I started every single game and put up decent numbers, if I'm not getting the job done on the practice field, if somebody is doing better than me, why not let them get a shot?"

This is my first post on this board, which I thoroughly enjoy reading, but I think the ceiling is pretty low for Boeckman. I'm no guru but I just don't see Boeckman progressing. He throws off his back leg too much, doesn't throw the ball away when he needs to, won't step up into the pocket, tosses the long ball with his head back... it just goes on. I remember listening to Earl Bruce and that radio crew on the way out to watch the Michigan game, proclaiming Boeckman would probably be the MVP of the game. I looked at my wife and said, "Beanie Wells will be the MVP, you watch." And, I say that because if you look at the tapes, Boeckman's play always hinged upon Beanie Wells stepping up and being the team leader. Wells' performance gave him confidence. With the rumor that Henton may be transferring... one can only hope we can land a decent QB recruit.
