2009 Composite Team Rankings

I follow ESPN about as much as I follow BP. Normally, I have no problem with any ESPN things; I LIKE ESPN. I don't look for biases, I just find this comment to be out of place. I don't know if you have seen it, it just seems odd that an organization cannot find at least one positive thing to write about 1 university, like it did for 9 others. I just feel a need to explain myself, I don't think your following where I'm going with this.

I don't think ESPN has a bias against tOSU, 9th is a good recruiting class, and obviously it is 9th because we didn't sign any top 20 of their top 150. I get that.

And yet you're still complaining about it. Anytime ESPN (or any other sports media outlet) slights OSU in any way, people here jump on it and start crying like a schoolgirl that just got told she couldn't sit at the popular table.

If you're insecure about being a fan of a university football team to the point that some tool on TV gets your blood boiling, then you've got bigger problems.

Edit: Can someone split this off? It doesn't need to be in the recruiting forum.

What's shocking is that there is a collective purpose to slander our University at anytime possible regardless of the relevancy. I wish that I could watch the meetings at which they openly coordinate this. We need to call them on their petty bs every single time because ESPN's reach is unrivaled and their opinions become reality if we don't. If they have the right to campaign against us we have every right to at least ask that what they are doing be acknowledged.

when faced with a problem like this in statistics you follow a simple plan to rationalize for operator bias.

Throw out the high, throw out the low, average the rest.

New top 12 (old rank shown in parentheses)
Rank....School....Rank1....Rank2....Avg
1(01.) LSU..........2.......1.......1.5
2(02.) Alabama......2.......1.......1.5
3(03.) Ohio State...2.......3.......2.5
4(05.) So Cal.......4.......4.......4.0
5(04.) Texas........5.......4.......4.5
6(07.) N. Carolina..8.......6.......7.0
7(06.) Georgia......7.......8.......7.5
8(11.) Florida.....10.......9.......9.5
9(08.) TSUN........10......10......10.0
10(13) Miami.......11......11......11.0
10(10.) Florida St..14.......8......11.0
11(09) S. Carolina.12......12......12.0
12(11) Oklahoma....13......11......12.0

I thought about doing that, and didn't bother because it didn't affect the top 3, and it throws out half of the sample size.

(Also, Bama should be 2.0 after throwing out the high and the low).

My point was not to show any ESPN bias, but to create a historical record of the overall rankings of the classes.

Oh please. Calling ESPN out for being recruiting no-nothings whose bias makes their rankings worthless is not the same as whining about being slighted. Anytime anyone takes the bait and bashes ESPN for doing what they always do, we get the SportsCenter fan-cum-realists jumping out and taking them to task for "crying like a schoolgirl" -- just like clockwork.

You're right. Making a Seinfeld reference with respect to ESPN is a sign of a deeply disturbed individual.

Or, alternatively, you'd see a pattern in my posts about ESPN: I always make a joke about Tom Luginbill. Maybe (just maybe) I have a sense of humor.

I thought too, yeah you throw out the outliers and average the rest, but then I also thought, why should ESPiN be included at all? Their main job isn't ranking high school athletes like those other sources, so just throw ESPiN out, and you probably get a much more accurate picture.

I'm sure they don't have staff meetings where they plan on how to bash tOSU or the Big Ten. It's just a cultural thing with them. It's so pervasive and ingrained within their little world, they don't even know they are doing it. It's like any other form of prejudice - it's easier to think that way than to look at the facts and form your own opinion.

Re: jmorbitz comment on Sheppard (sp?) is overrated. Overrated or not, he is going to have a tough time beating out Jefferson for the starting spot any time soon. That kid looked absolutely great in their Bowl game.

I also find it funny that according to all the media people, Tate Forcier si a great player because scUM needs him so badly. A great need does not make a great player. He could suck six ways to Sunday and still start next year. Just because he will start as a true Frosh, and scUM is desperate, doesn't make him better than he is.

Nice chart there BB. Looks like the BCS of recruiting minus the computers. And screw Luginbull and ESPiN. Like nightmare said recruiting isn't their forte and is a tool to cash in on the circus that it has become. The facts that their 150 list is largely comprised of UA AA game participants, and they receive the biggest boost in ranking after the game speak for themselves. I just laugh at their recruiting analyses and comments half the time. Regardless, I am proud of this class and the job the staff has done, and trust me, our last two classes WILL have the last laugh.
