2009 Friday Night Lights

grad,
It was good seeing you at FNL, you guys have some talented kids.

Here are some notes I had for FNL

I checked out a variety of groups, so I missed some matchups on the 1 on 1's but here are the players that stood out to me. One thing that's frustrating is I only saw a little of each group, so you get a guy that gets two pancakes or look at a WR that has a QB that throws him bad balls for two or three reps and then blows up when you are at another station.

DL/OL

Ronald Powell - If there's a better player in the country, I'd sure like to see who it is. I really think you do the rankings, #1 Ronald Powell, #2 Ronald Powell, #3 Ronald Powell, and then start with the rest of the class of 2010. Was he dominant at WR, no he wasn't but the kid is extremely athletic and looks like he is 22-23 and ready for his name to be called for the NFL Draft. During drills at DE, they had a drill where one lineman would run in like a figure eight pattern and the other lineman would chase them down. Powell would basically catch his man in the first circle and then beat him easily to the end. He probably could have lapped them if they allowed it. He's a "freak", and just an explosive athlete. Powell even spent time at linebacker and looked good.

Shariff Floyd - He's another kid who looked good in the figure eight drill and showed an impressive motor for his size. In 1 on 1's, he looked good despite having a kid that basically ripped his shirt and held him every play.

Leon Orr - Some have been saying he's a 5 star! Is he a 5 star, I don't know if I'd go that far yet just because he's pretty raw. However, he's probably the most athletic and quick DT that I've seen in awhile. I think when it's all said and done, he could be one of those kids you look back on and say he was a 5 star recruit. He was pretty dominating.

Louis Nix - I only saw Nix do three reps but he did look very good. I wouldn't say he was physically dominating but he definitely left his mark as one of the top DT's in attendance.

Ian Silberman - Silberman was dominating, I believe it was Nix that he had a nice pancake on. I was really impressed with Silberman compared to last year. He is an impressive looking prospect. He was beat a couple of times, but the battles that he won were eye opening, especially the pancake on Nix.

Chaz Green - Unfortunately, I wasn't very impressed with Green. You can tell that he oozes with athleticism but he's just really raw. Definitely a kid who is a project and with UF's coaching, could become a star. However, the defensive linemen pretty much had their way with him any time they made a move. I know the national guys raved about him so maybe he had better reps that I missed? I went over there towards the middle of 1 on 1's. I do see the potential, but I just was surprised at how raw he is. In watching film, he definitely looked more polished.

Bobby Hart - Bobby is a 2011 kid from Cardinal Gibbons HS in South Florida. He played DL last season and this past spring was moved to OL. He's a kid that measured in at 6-4 245, but the thing you probably don't know about him is he's 14. This kid could be a monster. Plus after seeing his dad, the kid likely isn't done growing.

Van Davis - Another 2011 kid from South Florida, he's from Royal Palm Beach HS. Van checked in at 6-5, 280 and he wanted to work out at DE. Following the event, a couple of us were trying to convince him that he's an OT. He moves so well but he doesn't want to play OT. He wants to hit the QB. After showing him highlights of Eric Mack and Curtis Porter pancaking and pulling, he still wants to play on the defensive side of the ball. He's an FSU fan.

I didn't get to really watch the #4 kid from Georgia (Fanning a 2011 kid), he looked the part though.

DB/WR

Demar Dorsey - In drills, he didn't look very fluid to me. However, in one on one's it was a different story. I really don't know if he's a CB at the next level but he did show me that he could play CB if needed.

Jonathan Dowling - He's a true free safety IMO, the 1 on 1's aren't really fair for a kid like Dowling. He's a kid that you put on the field and he "erases" the field for opposing QB's.

Allen Hurns - While Hurns looked good, one thing that concerns me is it appears that on the reps I saw he was catching the ball with his body. It's a whole different ballgame with pads on, you must be able to catch the ball with your hands. On a side note, I've seen two games (including the recent spring game) on Carol City and he really wasn't a factor.

Sammy Watkins - 2011 prospect - Holy Cow. Showed a great burst off the line and burned Riggs bad. Didn't see his other reps, I heard he only went 3 times.

Justin McCay - McCay was a kid I had #1 in the country based off of the film I saw. Why? Because at his size and the second gear he has, you don't see that a lot. However, after watching FNL I would probably put him in the mid top 100. He had trouble getting separation against the DB's and might be a TE at the next level. With that being said, the talent is there and still a top 100 kid.

Chris Dunkley - Easily the MVP of FNL. Dunkley is a kid that you sometimes forget how good he is. He makes it look so easy out there. The one matchup where Joyner supposedly got the best of him would've been a defensive pass interference call in a regular game. As Bob said, the kid should be a 5 star.

Markeith Ambles - Made some plays but I wouldn't put him ahead of guys like Boone, Louis, or Dunkley (duh) on Florida's board. He looked good at times, but I'm not sure he's a top 25 kid like some have been saying. He did look good in drills, but I think guys like Sammy Watkins, and Dunkley were head and shoulders better.

Javares McRoy - 2011 prospect - I only saw him twice but one of the plays was freaking beautiful. The out and up was I believe on Cody Riggs and it left him looking silly.

Cody Riggs - I really wasn't too impressed with Riggs in 1 on 1's. He was beat deep and turned around a few times. In drills, you can see that he has the hips and can play the position, the 1 on 1's didn't go well though.

Lamarcus Joyner - Joyner gets a lot of hype because he's a STA kid, and he hoots and hollers after every rep. Not to mention, with 1 on 1's you can get away with holding the jersey. While I was more impressed with Joyner than when I saw him at the 7 on 7 in Tampa, I think he's a safety at the next level. I will say that T-shirts and shorts isn't his forte but he did look good but with the pads on, he's an impressive safety.

Jabari Gorman - 2011 prospect - Gorman is an undersized safety aka Ahmad Black. He struggled in 1 on 1's because he's a true safety. He looked good in drills though. I think he's a better hitter than Black was at the high school level and slightly more athletic. He's usually the best kid on the field every Friday night. He looked good at FNL and looks like a kid that Florida will go after.

Keion Payne - Definitely looked fluid in drills and had his moments in 1 on 1's. He has good size as well. I think he's Miami bound IMO.

Victor Hampton - Looked good in drills, struggled at times in 1 on 1's but definitely can see flashes of what makes him a good corner. Shows great anticipation and had a nice jam on McCay early in 1 on 1 's and made him run a short route.

Kasen Williams - 2011 prospect - I originally thought this was Karlos Williams as I could've swore that's what the roster said. However, numerous people said this was Kasen Williams. Kasen is an impressive looking dude. Definitely a kid that looks the part and he made some plays early in 1 on 1's.

Nick Waisome - 2011 prospect - Waisome has had better days in 1 on 1's but the thing I loved about him was his willingness to go and do multiple reps. That shows me that he is a competitor and despite some rough patches in 1 on 1's, he was still eager to impress and shake off a bad play. He looked very good in individual drills, definitely a Florida caliber player. He's also so aggressive, especially for a 2011 kid. He doesn't shy away from competition. Waisome also ran a 4.44 on a very slow track. The field had a ton of sand on it, so that was a great time.

Curtis Davis - If the South Lake WR was a little taller or a little faster, he might be one of the best in the state. He gets the job done, makes his plays and does it quietly without anyone noticing.

Tehvyn Brantley - It's unfortunate he's 5-8, he's going to be a steal for UNC IMO. He just has a knack for getting open and making the big play.

LB/RB

To be honest, this and the QB group were the one's I looked at the least.

Mike Bellamy - 2011 prospect -Definitely a kid that should be the top RB in the state, if not the top kid for UF next year. He has it all and should be an elite back next year.

Shon Carson - 2011 prospect - Looked good in drills, didn't get to see him in the 1 on 1's but I liked him in drills. I didn't get his 40 time at the event but I was told he slipped at the start. This is a kid that ran a 4.38 at the UA Combine but also ran a 6.38 60 Time at a recent baseball combine. He's 5-9 190, so that's pretty awesome.

Jeff Luc - As bad as it would be if I were to do this as a college coach, I'd offer the kid a scholarship just by the way he looks. As Luke Stampini put it, he's not a Ray Lewis type that's going to fly all over the field and make plays sideline to sideline, but he's a kid that's going to make his tackles and assignments and make you pay.

I really want to know who #144 was, he wasn't on the roster and he looked like a cross between Jeff Luc and Christian Jones from a physical standpoint. Very impressive in drills. I later found out this kid was Jeremiah George a 2010 LB from Clearwater HS (FL)

QB

As I said before, I really didn't look at the QB's that much. I will say Chris was right, the new OTC QB looks around 6-3 220. As far as QB's go, Trickett impressed me the most. Again though, I didn't watch a lot of the QB's but as far as the balls that were being thrown, it was pretty lackluster.

Well this is it, these are the players that caught my eye. Unfortunately, I had to watch different groups, I would've like to have spent more time on the WR/DB's for the 2nd half of 1 on 1's.

The Big Kat, anyone?

This is really great stuff, btw. Thanks for posting here.

Figured this would be the best spot to post this but check this out. Don't know if this is verified but i've seen it in a few different places.

Apparently former Gator and now Minnesota Viking wide receiver Percy Harvin was invited by some Florida coaches to come speak to a few recruits about his time at the university. The idea was to give them an NFL player?s perspective on how the school helped him not only get to the NFL, but also how they made him a better player in general.Well, things started great as he talked about how good the staff was to the players, how they won a couple championships, and how they helped him become a NFL first rounder?then he started keeping it real.
What we?re hearing:
- Harvin discussed his continuous pot use, and how he was able to smoke it for the majority of his time at UF.
- Harvin also confirmed the long time rumor that he made a mistake and choked his wide receivers coach, and how the school gave him a second chance by covering it up so the media didn?t report it.
- He also talked about the benefits that being a Gator brought to the party scene in Gainesville.

Needless to say, the coaches weren?t very happy. Maybe they should just stick to Tim Tebow at these events?

More bull...he talked about mistakes he has made in his life and how much the spotlight shines on you as a star. He told the kids that mistakes will happen and they need to persevere through whatever issues happen. It was not a graceful message by any means but it was an honest account of his own tribulations.

LOL there is no way that Percy Harvin would go to a UF camp and say ANY of those things to incoming recruits. He'd have to seriously be the dumbest man on earth.
