2009 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

RB07OSU i like your predictions for that class but is it highly likely gardner will take that grey shirt offer and I think we will land atleast one out of state linebacker like we do every year. Especially when we will be offering most likely Four out of state linebacker-maybe more. I also agree im not to sure where Mason ends up but I do see him getting an offer soon. Then for Homan i think he is at Lb till further regards from the staff, he is not to big to play on line and osu does have a great s&c he can get faster most likely red shirting first year.

Great point on Gardiner and I thought about that after his most recent update. As mentioned, Whiting is from Kentucky but I think we may get one more OOS LB. Mason may have to earn his offer at camp imo, though I see him being in this class.

I just don't see Gardnier taking that G.S.... Hope I'm wrong.

Personally, I do...he has a chance to be on a full scholarship after only delaying enrollment for a few months or even be on scholarship with the '08 class if OSU misses on some kids or there are more juniors leaving than expected. I could be wrong but I think the pros far outweight the cons in this situation...

Remind me Wad... didn't someone pass up the G.S. last year? Who was that?

I don't think he'll take just because I can't see him getting much playing time here.

I'm sure he loves Ohio State and I would never question his desire to play here, but at the end of the day he's still a football player and I'm guessing just playing the game he loves is more important in the end.

Does anyone know if the staff is looking at Devontae Payne, the 6'6 240 QB from Cleveland-South. He seems to be getting a bit of national hype, but I haven't heard of the staff showing any interest, yet.

Also, except for Northwestern, tOSU really is the ony "big city" school in the Big 10, and, really, along w/ Miami, the only football power located in the middle of a major city east of the Mississippi. While I am sure Tressel doesn't play up the urban "advantages" to a lot of OOS kids, I'm sure the players do.

People think Columbus is bigger than it is, because the city population is so high (around 15th largest I believe). But this is only because the city is so large area wise and areas that are considered suburbs in other cities are part of the actual city in Columbus (i.e. the University District). A better measure of a city's size is major metropolitan area. Let's take a look at some schools in major metropolitan areas. I know all these aren't powers, but they all do play in BCS conferences and are all East of the Mississippi.

(Numbers from Wikipedia so they could be wrong)

Major Metropolitan Area Population Sizes

Rutgers (New Brunswick, NJ in Edison, NJ) - 2.3 million (Edison is a subset of the NYC market, 18.8 million)
Northwestern (Chicago, Ill) - 9.5 million
Miami (Miami, FL) - 5.5 million
Maryland (half hour from DC) - 5.3 million
Georgia Tech (Atlanta, GA) - 5.1 million
Boston College (Boston, MA) - 4.5 million
Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN) - 3.2 million
USF (Tampa, FL) - 2.7 million
Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, PA) - 2.4 million
Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH) - 2.1 million
OSU (Columbus, OH which goes out to Marion and Chillicothe) - 1.7 million

Yes, OSU is the best football school on that list, but at the same time, it's also the least urban location. My point is, OSU's campus feels more like Michigan's or Indiana's than it does Minnesota's or Georgia Tech's.

I do...but I really think the numbers will allow him to be a part of the 08 class. Just a hunch

Yes, but it is all on hold with Pryor. If Terrelle comes in, it will be tough to get any of the top guys to come in next year. Also, I posted a thread for Kevin Newsome tonight...he has the staff's eye but he is also considered a VT lean. Pryor is priority #1 right now...but if something should fall through, there will not be any drought in QB talent in Columbus.
