2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

RR probably barely set foot in the state while recruiting at WV
Where would you say RR's home state is for recruiting? Michigan or Florida? I'd vote for the latter.
FWIW, both RR and Dantonio have offered 4 MI players for 2010, 3 of which are the same, so that competition is already on.
MSU has a considerable lead for Gholston and did for White. Gardner & Mathis will be national recruits. Jackson is the coaches son. I'm not sure the battle's shaping up well so far.

So... what is RR's home state, HTM? Do you disagree that it's florida?

Make it five for us, I forgot about Jackson.
I'm not sure if MSU offered Jackson, but if not, that's likely because they had no shot. I'll leave him in until someone clarifies that one.

The Cass Tech pipeline is beating out the Pahokee pipeline right now; besides, I think RR offered about 12-14 MI recruits and fewer than that many FL ones.

According to the Scout database:

8 MI offers, 4 verbals
21 FL offers, 6 verbals

(and just to beat a dead horse)

20 Dixie offers, 1 verbal (very soft)

There aren't 21 players in MI worth offering. As I said - the only player in MI that RR didn't offer without a pretty clear and logical reason that I can see is James Jackson. xcrunner offered that he might be too small to block like RR wants, and I do appreciate the effort, but Odoms is puny and blocks all the time. (Admittedly, not that well.)

But you see where I'm going with this... this season, other than Chris Norman, the list could generally be explained away. Next year, the only offer they can feel confident about is the RB coach's son (who has verballed). Contrast that with Marvin Robinson, Ricardo Miller, Lo Wood, etc for Florida in 2010.

It seems like his base is Florida to me, and if Sparty brings in Gholston, White and one other big name to go with their longer list of "fillers", the propaganda about Sparty focusing/owning Michigan will only grow stronger, even if RR would rather it not be that way.

Odoms does not play the blocking position (WR). He is a slot.

Um, nobody has any problem getting talent out of Florida, because there are just so many D-I kids down there. Hell, even your neighbor EMU has signed 18 kids from Florida over the past 7 seasons.

It's what kind of talent you can get from Florida that matters. Who's UM's best Florida signee in recent years? Garrett Rivas? Maybe some of your 2009 recruits will pan out, but it's not like the Big 3 had tons of interest in kids like Emilien, Jones, Smith, Hawthorne, and Gallon (actually, they had no interest in any of them).

On the other hand, Ohio State has signed stars such as Michael Jenkins, Chris Gamble, and Santonio Holmes; solid players like Nate Salley, Chimdi Chekwa, and Brian Rolle; and future stars like Michael Brewster, Etienne Sabino, and (presumably) Jaamal Berry, all of whom were "Top 100" players and had offers from at least one of the Big 3 schools ... and I'm not counting in my list young players like Travis Howard, Duron Carter, Carlos Hyde, and Ohrian Johnson who were not recruited by the Big 3 ... and James Scott (2007 signee) who had a Florida offer but was booted from the team.

When you guys start pulling some big names out of the Sunshine State, you just let us know, okay?

FYI, Carlos Hyde had offers from all of the Big 3 in Florida. I think he is one of the most underrated recruits in our class.

Hmmm... interesting spin, but the decommitments weren't [just] because of the 3-9 season.

And how much of a *chance* do you think you guys have to end up in the top 7 or 8? And a follow-up to that... where do you think you'll actually rank once everything is said-and-done?

UM generally ends up so-so... usually a big surprise commitment accompanied by a surprise loss (see DWarren/RoJo, Nick Perry/Ricky Barnum & Tay Odoms).

This year... yikes. UM is at 20 commitments right now with Pearlie Graves and DeQuinta Jones visiting other schools. (IMO) Looks like UM will finish #2 with just about every major prospect that they are recruiting... I say this class ends up in the #12-15 range.

There are some good pieces here (Lewan, Roh, Schofield, Forcier, Campbell, Turner, Lalota), but are any of them ready to make an immediate impact.

Obviously, UM needs improved play at the QB position. Can Forcier provide that? Next biggest need is true athletic ability on defense at just about every position... can Campbell, Turner or anyone else provide that?

What was Carr's home state? Going back... UM only took/received a few commitments each year from the state of MI. What's new?

2005, 6 recruits
2006, 4 "
2007, 5 "
2008, 5 "
2009, 5 "

It's not like UM always took 10ish MI players a year. Agree that UM is recruiting FL much harder now.

True. I think it's more of a perception thing, especially when you start looking at his focus across the midwest.

It will be interesting to see how many FL kids he lands this year, with more time and relationships built up, and to revisit this question then.
