2010 U.S. Army All-American Bowl - January 9, 1 PM EST, NBC

I'll take the soft sell every time.... well.. nearly every time.. there are some talents, I think, that you can't soft sell.. program changing guys.. but they are rare...

Why? Well, it's the same reason Tress has had success with 3 stars turning in to NFLguys...

When you have a kid who WANTS to be there, you're increasing your chance of success with those guys. They maybe aren't six star talent... but heart makes up a lot of that gap, it seems.

All this talk of class rating reminds me of the one really useful tool that comes from those recruiting sites.

The sortable team ranking table.

In the default view Ohio State looks, this year, to have a poor class relative to even lesser light such as BYU.

Now click that "Avg" tab and look at the updated table.

1 - USC Avg - 4.13 (we'll see what happens if PC goes Seahawk on the Trojans)
2 - Florida Avg - 4.00
3 - Texas Avg - 4.00
4 - Penn State Avg - 3.95 (a really good year for them)
5 - 'Bama Avg 3.75
6 - Georgia Avg 3.68
7 - tOSU Avg - 3.63

Now, given the assumption that it is much harder to attract the absolute top tier to a small class (fewer spots, possibly a perception of fewer opportunities for early playing time) while of course it is easier to boost said rating with some timely late high-rated additions, I think this years average is a solid positive reflection on the recruiting staff.

I guess, in summary that I don't buy that Ohio State's level of recruiting is that much lower than the other elite programs. After all, last year, with a larger final head count, came in with a nation topping score, and 4th place when sorted for average rating. (The prior year, 4th place unsorted, 2nd sorted for average rating).

OSU really hasn't recruited as well as USC, Fl, Tex, LSU, and Ala (coming back). We are not a top tier FB program but seem to be improving - need OL/DL which we come up short on.
I am not sure I follow what you are saying here? Are you saying we are not a top tier FB program in recruiting or overall?

Your post is mostly dead on but as well as we've done with "under the radar guys" that we "develop well", just imagine if we actually recruited on the USC, UF, etc. Now the '08 and '09 classes are different stories...those classes combined are right on that elite level.

...and my money is on half of those "elite" kids playing somewhere else by now because they didn't get the playing time they thought they deserved.

Like it or not those 4 year kids plugging away behind the scenes on special teams and in practice contribute more to a team than the stars who don't stick around.

Recruiting Ranking

I should have clarified that we have recently lost on the field and in recruiting to those teams but we are improving in both. Floyd does not fit the Tressel kid profile - he was swayed by another recruit (apparently).

Huh? If you meant that the football team is not top tier, your top tier most contain 2-3 teams!
